Is Thomas having some weird type of “gay conversion therapy?” The magazine he dropped had an article about how you can make your choice or something similar (I barely read the headline when he grabbed it), and he seems to be giving himself injections of some kind.
^Ahhhh, that’s what it was. I am sure you are right. I had been meaning to ask the group about why he had syringes in his room.
Was it his room? I don’t think female staff would be walking by male staff’s doors, and it looked downstairs, not on the top floor…
I just skimmed through the article, but somewhere in the last few days, I read somewhere that Fellowes wants his new show to be almost a prequel to DA, possibly to the time when Robert and Cora met.
OK… I found an article:
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/julian-fellowes-plans-downton-abbey-374962
teriwtt, I remember reading similar a couple years ago, Fellowes thinking along of “The Buccaneers” and the wealthy new money girls of the US being sent to find titled husbands in Europe. Cora of course would be of that ilk. I would love to see what he does with it (and I want to see the costumes and set design!).
lorelei2702 re: the subtitles–here is my H’s info:
If you have the comcast Xfinity X-1 platform, you just scroll to the ‘gear’ icon, then scroll down to the second choice which is ‘device settings’ and you can select closed captioning. I don’t remember how it works on the older version.
I would never be able to understan either shows if not for closed captionining–so hope this helps you.
We have Comcast & at first it would not work with our TVs, on some we hit cable-power-menu-menu (yes with the power “off”) and an old DOS looking menu comes up to put on CC
Other TVs allow us to add CC via the regular comcast menu
Again–closed captioning is so important! even my perfectly hearing H says he depends on it for these shows.
I am hard of hearing but actually do better than my H in social situations as I both focus and read lips.
Well, the frustrating part is a season is not really a full season. If they finish after season 6, then that’s really a only 3 seasons of a normal show. Just doesn’t seem quite enough.
Yes but that is “normal” for British TV! Frustrating to us Americans who are spoiled with 20-episode seasons. Maybe it’s because they have far fewer actors, and they have to be spread around to a number of shows? Anyway, at least we’re not Sherlock fans - those poor folks (like my daughter) get only 4 episodes, then end up waiting years for a new season! I do like Doc Martin, and joined that show later in progress, so I was able to Netflix right through, but it goes into production only every other year. So, it could be worse.
I had heard about the New York series, and it sounds interesting. We visited Newport a couple summers ago, and enjoyed it so much. We had just starting watching DA, and it was wonderful to see the big houses, the downstairs kitchens and rooms, and the upstairs opulence. Though they aren’t castles, they are still very similar to what we see on DA. I just hope the new series brings in some more exciting characters - Cora and LG aren’t the most riveting.
I think that ending DA is a good thing. The way of life that DA represents is ending. WWII ends the big manor house and having a big staff forever. So it seems right to end DA.
I for one, although I am sad to see series end, I’m glad when they end before they are stale. End on a high note. And I like knowing there will be an end.
My H has a tough time hearing most of the British shows. He says everyone mumbles. I like Elementary but H says he can’t understand Sherlock (Johnny Lee Miller) so he doesn’t watch it anymore. Closed captioning hepls.
I use closed captioning when watching online.
Did anyone hear what the preview was with Edith and the Aunt going to see marigold? I “saw” it but there was no sound so not sure what happened.
I hope that when Fellowes ends the series, everyone will have a happy ending. Edith especially.
I think the baby story is heading for resolution. The way this series seems to work is they introduce x and y and handle x and let y carryover. The whole missing guy/hidden baby thing is a carryover so it’s up for solution this year. I’m speaking this way because they draw out story arcs.
I think the annoying teacher plot is also resolving because we saw Robert take charge: we’ll find a quality builder and do this right, showing he’s both modern and traditional, that he cares about what happens to the village and the estate.
@deb922…very good point. I agree, with their way of life ending, it is a good time to let go of the series so we can remember them “as they were”. Also, I’m glad Violet is old, so she won’t have to have her world change drastically. It was probably enough having to leave Downton as the lady of the house.
I feel ambivalent about a prequel series. Will Cora and Robert be good enough with younger actors? Who could possibly replace Maggie Smith as Violet??? It will be interesting to see but I’m a bit worried.
I don’t think it’s a prequel with the same characters but a prequel of the same type of people. Rich americans instead of English. New money instead of old.
I don’t care. If it has gorgeous period costumes and beautiful sets, I will watch it.
Sally, I’m with you!
And just saw that Masterpiece will be showing Wolf Hall starting in March. Loved that series!
Sadly, the Super Bowl will pre-empt Downton tonight – at least at the house I’ll be partying at. I’m taping it so I can watch it either when we get home or tomorrow AM.
