Downton Abbey

Yes, watched Gratchester Season 1 and I think it is good. Part of that is that the vicar is very good looking!

Absolutely love “Call the Midwife” and big fan of the new show that aired earlier this season, “Indian Summers” but I couldn’t get into the other one about the home front during WWII

@bookmama22, we are proof that it takes all kinds because I loved Homefront and quit watching Indian Summers after the 2nd episode.

There’s a lovely slideshow on the PBS website about the costumes on Downton Abbey:

I really enjoyed the recent War and Peace miniseries. James Norton (the vicar in Grantchester) is one of the main characters, as is Lily James (Lady Rose from Downton).

@2VU0609 I agree with you. We watched Indian Summers but I could hardly wait until each episode was over. I loved Homefront. I can hardly wait for new episodes. This is also the last season for Mr. Selfridge. We really loved that series.

I think the gloves are what really makes those outfits spectacular. I bet if we started wearing them at our Christmas parties, other things we dress up for every so often, our outfits would look better.

I watched Mr. Selfridge for a season and didn’t return in season 2. I think I spoiled it for myself when I did some research on the real Mr. Selfridge and discovered he didn’t have a happy ending.

As for the gloves, I think you may be on to something, @conmama. I remember when gloves were still important. Every Easter outfit included gloves until I was around 11 or 12. My mother had gotten rid of lots of things through her various moves across the years, but still in assisted living, she had a drawer with lots of delicate leather gloves. Several of the pairs were 3/4 length. I don’t think she had worn them since the '60s, but they were a memory of a time gone by for her, I guess. She also had a great black peau de soie clutch which I gave to my D, but then reclaimed. I carried it at my S’s wedding and will carry it again in June for D’s wedding with flowers attached to remember her. Our clothes are much more casual and easy care, but most of us (me especially) don’t put as much effort into our “style.”

I can’t figure out what you all mean with “Homefront”. I can only find an old '91 to '93 TV show referenced and a movie back in 2013. What channel is it on?

@VaBluebird I believe the chatter is about Home Fires

^^Thank you!

Gloves are definitely an accessory that makes those outfits! When they are getting ready for dinner, they look pretty…then they put on those long satin gloves and just WOW!

We are going to watch Selfridge to see the end of the story, but clearly the end is not good for Harry Selfridge. Once Rose died, the downhill spiral began.

I like the long gloves too, and I wonder if there wasn’t a practicality to them as well. Those evening dresses were mostly sleeveless and they were them year-round in drafty old homes. Maybe they were for warmth as well as fashion.

Since they upstairs ladies never had to do any work whatsoever, gloves made sense in cool and cold weather. Maybe not so much in the summer?

I loved Mary’s green dress on this show and even my husband noticed it. We both wondered how Mary got a wedding dress (which was lovely) put together so fast. Those poor servants were working overtime!

Mary’s clothes are lovely.

I’m a little late to the party here, but perhaps Edith’s “happy ending” will be working at a career she loves and raising Marigold whom she clearly adores. Maybe she will find happiness and fulfillment without marriage.

I think Bertie will come back to mary Edith. Bertie is a progressive man. He will use his unexpected fortune to buy out DA and convert it to something for some noble cause.

You have more faith in Bertie than I do. It seemed to be he couldn’t run fast enough, back to mommy.

I’m with Fallgril, though if there was another year of DA, I’d like Edith to find someone nice. Another year, and Mary could have met someone more appropriate for her than Wooden Man.

But his VOICE people, just close your eyes and hear that voice. Honestly, who’d put up with Mary’s voice is beyond me.

I also love Mary’s clothes this season, one outfit more spectacular than the next.

As much as I love Matthew Goode, I am in agreement with a lot of the other posters… I didn’t really see the chemistry between the two characters or the rush to get married other than tying everything up for the series finale.
