Downton Abbey

Remember Brideshead Revisited? It was the Downton Abbey of the 1980s. And like Downton it was partly based on and filmed at an actual large country house - in this case Castle Howard instead of Highclere Castle. Anyway, I recall interviews from actors in the series saying that they would hate to actually live in such a house because they were always so cold. Even with upgraded modern heating the huge rooms with high ceilings were always drafty and chilly, and that even with the movie lighting helping to heat the place they were often miserably cold during the filming.

Oh, Brideshead… I loved that series. I have seen it four or five times. I have the same teddy bear that Aloysius carried around. But Brideshead wasn’t anywhere near as popular as Downton.

Wasn’t it Sebastian Flyte who carried the teddy bear?

Yes, it was Sebastian. The teddy bear’s name was Aloysius.

Now Sesame Street is spoofing Downton Abbey, as “Upside Downton Abbey”:

[‘Sesame Street’ takes on ‘Downton Abbey’ with ‘Upside Downton Abbey’ [Exclusive video] - Yahoo! TV](<a href=“'Sesame Street' takes on 'Downton Abbey' with 'Upside Downton Abbey' [Exclusive video]”>'Sesame Street' takes on 'Downton Abbey' with 'Upside Downton Abbey' [Exclusive video])

Priceless, college_query! Thanks.

^^^Darling spoof, the Carson muppet nails it.

“yes, mmmmmummmmm”, indeed he does!

:)

I loved Brideshead Revisited. I thought both guys were so attractive. Has anyone watched it recently? I wonder if it holds up.

I never saw Brideshead, but was a huge fan of the Jewel in the Crown. Did any of you Downton fans recognize the misdiagnosing doctor as a major character from that series?

^^^Now that you mention it, I do!! Just imagine him in military khakis, and there you go!
I’ve got to see Brideshead; I was working evenings then and never got to see it…

Loved the Muppet spoof…so clever and cute.

Love the Muppets - the Dowager is perfect! “It’s just not done!”

For those of us who are in places where the Sesame Street video isn’t available - the YouTube version [Sesame Street: Upside Downton Abbey - YouTube](<a href=“Sesame Street: Upside Downton Abbey - YouTube”>Sesame Street: Upside Downton Abbey - YouTube)

gloworm, Tim Pigott-Smith has been in a lot of great stuff. He played the father in North & South. Brendan Coyle, who plays Bates, was also in that one, as I believe we mentioned upthread. (Anyone who hasn’t seen North & South–the British 4-part series, not the older American one, and all they share is the title–really must do so. It has a cult following of females. :D)

Ronald Merrick, one of the great TV villains. Tim Piggot-Smith was also in the first season of the BBC America series *The Hour/i

Brideshead and Jewel in the Crown are regular viewing at our house. To us they’re two of the best things that have ever been on TV, and they put Downton Abbey to shame. H does a wicked Anthony Blanche imitation.

Tim Piggot-Smith played opposite Michelle Dockery in her West End deubt as Eliza Dolittle in My Fair Lady.

Thanks, everyone. I could’t remember his name and was too lazy to look it up. That was my favorite Masterpiece series.

Mine, too, gloworm. We even chose the boxed book set as our " thank-you" gift from
PBS that year…and read them all!

Anyone here old enough to remember “The Palisors”? That was my favorite. Sigh for the costumes.
