Downton Abbey

Nrdsb4, I think that post refers to Edna, who was fired for pursuing Tom shortly after Sybil died. She is back, replacing O’Brien.

I wouldn’t classify her as one of the young ones.

I hadn’t caught that the guy with the insane wife was named Mr. Rochester.

Charles Grigg was seen early in the first season as the blackmailer who threatened Carson with “humiliating” him by revealing his past as a stage performer in the Cheerful Charlies. He was hard up for money and food. Carson took food from the kitchen but would not give him money. Eventually he goes to Lord Grantham with the story, who gives him some money so that he will go away.

Originally we think that the rift between them was because Grigg was a petty thief and stole from the shows, but this episode reveals that there had been a love triangle. I thought the Grigg character was brought in to reveal more about Carson’s past.

I agree it’s hard to remember all these old plot lines and characters from seasons past. I had to look all that up!

I believe Edith’s BF is named Michael Gregson.

The Downton guy with the insane wife isn’t named Mr. Rochester; that’s just my nickname. There’s another guy in literature with an insane wife who wants to marry and who is named Mr. Rochester.

I think Edith’s married beau is genuinely sweet and I don’t think he’s trying to sweet-talk her into bed. It seems to me that if he were that conniving, he wouldn’t have told her he’s married in the first place. However, I do have concerns about his becoming a German citizen. Does that mean they will live in Germany as WWII draws closer? Which side will they support?

Early in last night’s episode he mentioned that he could also divorce in Portugal. Why not become a Portuguese citizen then?

I had to look up Edna Braithewaite on the Wiki, because I forgot which character she was. I think she may have been blonde previously and I didn’t recognize her.

Yes, and as others above have mentioned, PSA to those referring to the Wiki: There are spoilers there; I inadvertently found one about Edna.

On another note, no one in the family knows that Edith’s new guy is married, right? That will be fun when they find out. Edith is a hot mess, but I still like her better than Mary.

So it was you making the Jane Eyre reference, not the show…got it. I forgot so many names since last winter.

swimcatsmom, Ha ha… I totally agree about the “eating off a tray” line. Maggie Smith’s delivery is impeccable. Love her!

Be sure and scroll down for the expression on Maggie Smiths face as she gets a squeeze from Dustin Hoffman.

I have forgotten Morley’s background. I know he shook all of the time when serving but cannot remember why. Anyone?

VH - I thought the same thing! Why not become a Portuguese citizen instead of a German?

Edith’s boyfriend isn’t Jewish, is he?
Loved Edith’s dress too.
However, I thought the episode was a big yawner. Costumes, scenery, etc just isn’t enough to keep me interested.

Personally I though it was a bit boring and also forced. Sometimes you need an episode in which to lay down some further plotlines but… too many scenes of Daisy and Ivy standing around the kitchen with the footmen, too much about Mosely and his lack of position now that Matthew is gone, unrealistic to me that Branson would have taken it upon himself to chat up Carson about getting Mary re-engaged with the estate, unrealistic to me given that it is Post WWI that a possibility of life in Germany is up for discussion for anyone in England with a position in society unless they are planing a plotline for him to be able to be an eye on what is developing politically there. I agree that Edith got to wear some lovely clothes this time around and even in mourning, Mary looks lovely. I did like the storyline about Isobel and what her situation is going to be with Matthew out of the picture now. Cora seems to have her hands full with managing all these changes… O’Brien, her new lady’s maid and former Downtown Abbey employee, having to locate a new nanny and so on. Will keep watching but the plotlines seem pretty stretched to me.

But she wouldn’t have gotten into his bed without the ring on her finger. Or that’s my hypothesis, anyway. Although he does seem sweet, so who knows?

I’ve seen the whole series already (I have the DVD on my shelf too…) so I won’t offer any spoilers, but I did enjoy the series

However, Julian Fellowes is saying that series 5 might be the last, because he’s going to the US to do something that sounds like an American rehash of Downton :frowning: [Downton Abbey to be axed after series 5?

Didn’t she have a brief ‘thing’ with a married farmer a while back, when we saw her actually get up on a tractor and learn to operate it?

1870s? I guess those would be good clothes. I would like to vote on the time period of any new show based on how awesome the costumes will be.

omg, people.
Michael Gregson is the editor of “The Sketch”, a London society newspaper.
Lady Edith writes a column.
Gregson(DA)=Rochester(JE)
Mosley is the nervous valet (Matthew’s) that you are referring to as Morley in post #1850?

Just FYI, it’s spelled Molesley: [url=<a href=“http://downtonabbey.wikia.com/wiki/Joseph_Molesley]Joseph”>Joseph Molesley | Downton Abbey Wiki | Fandom]Joseph Molesley - Downton Abbey Wiki/url
