I didn’t know Cora lost a baby. (I only started watching in Season 3.)

I think the men are getting it pretty rough too! Poor Tom, widowed and being pursued by Braithwaite. Poor Mathew; he died. Poor Mr. Gregson (if we believe him), that his wife is insane. Poor Albert (or is it Alfred?), who pines after one of the cooking assistants. Poor Molesley, who’s pretty much lost everything!

I think it’s just the nature of a soap opera, that everyone’s story is pretty miserable sooner or later.

Whatever happened to the plot line that was developing around Daisy? IIRC, she is a widow, and her farmer FIL was going to leave the farm to her. Am I remembering this correctly? Did that ever go anywhere??

Plot-wise, those two are unrelated. Cora miscarried the baby because she slipped and fell on soap that was intentionally left in her path by her evil lady’s maid, O’Brien. Who was under the mistaken belief that Cora was seeking to hire someone to replace her.

Also, I don’t recall Cora trying to disinherit her daughters. What I recall is the Dowager Countess trying to disinherit Matthew in favor of the girls by trying to undo the male-heir only entail.

I’m losing interest by the week. The story lines are getting too convoluted for my taste. I’ll probably keep recording the series and binge watch on a day I’m really bored. I’m disappointed because I had been looking forward to it. I’ll just have to wait for Call The Midwife, now.

Cora *wasn’t *trying to disinherit them. She was trying to keep them from being disinherited.
She was just trying to keep her money within the family.
“Trying to undo” means she was trying to stop that process.
I agree that Cora losing the male heir was not as a direct result of her wish to pass her money onto her eldest child.

^^I guess I was looking at the term “disinherit” differently. With a male-heir-only entail already in place, the daughters weren’t “disinherited” because nothing was really taken away from them. There was nothing to take because they never were legal heirs to begin with. They sort of had the same status as 2nd and 3rd sons - entitled to inherit a prominent family name - and nothing else.

Once Cousin Patrick went down with the ship the only person who could be be disinherited through legal maneuvers was Matthew, because he was the sole heir.

She really can’t. And Gregson said he was going to Munich - a hotbed of very early Nazi activity … Hmmm. It was interesting to see her Walk of Shame, though.
As for Tom and Braithewaite, I thought it was an interesting twist on the old “get drunk and take advantage” story line.

Poor Edith!! I think that this Michael Gregson character is shady…what document was he having her sign?

I liked last night and last week… so much better than the boring two-hour season opener. Think the story line with Anna is interesting and good riddance to Braithwaite… but we may not have seen the last of her. Might Anna be pregnant as a result of the rape?

Totally agree garland! I missed last week’s episode, but knew that Anna had been raped. When I watched the episode last night, that whole card-game with the staffers was such a set-up. When would Anna ever hang out with the others staffers like that? And of course she will be pregnant. How could that NOT be what happens: she won’t let Bates near her AND exactly what Braithewait wished she could be.

And the story with Tom’s character? Ugh! Ever time we saw him, he was pouting and talking about feeling like he didn’t belong. He stopped talking like that a long time ago and it was so much more believeable before when he wasn’t wearing tails… I did like Mrs. Hughes’ response though. Good for her.

MommaJ: I didn’t notice the size of the character’s heads, but I couldn’t help but notice how awful Mary looked. Her wardrobe is so unflattering. It’s not just the fashion of the times, because everyone else looks normal. But those dresses on Mary just look terrible.

IMHO, Mary shouldn’t have been so hasty to turn down Lord What’s-His-Name. He seemed like a very decent chap. Definitely on the up and up, and oh-so-handsome.

What episode are you all talking about with the fake Patrick?

And, BTW, I think Mary will regret turning Lord what’s his name down. In fact, she did say just that last night. Reminds me of what she went through with Matthew.
