The ash black looks like silver to me, also.

Yay! My favorite thread has been bumped up! Thanks, mominva! Congrats on your D’s upcoming wedding!

Honestly, if you have S&P hair color, then the plum would look fabulous! IMO better than the Silver/Steel color that may tend to wash you out. My Mil has silver hair and when she wears plum or dark pinks it really looks wonderful on her.

As you know by reading this thread, Nordstrom has free shipping in both directions so you may want to try it on in the comfort of your own home!

I’ll check around in the next few days and see what I can find too. What size and what criteria are you looking for? Fall wedding, so longer sleeves? What color will the wedding theme be, if any? Bridesmaids colors? Does your D have certain colors in mind? Are you open to any colors or just want to stick with Silver/Steel?

The hunt will be on! :)

mominva:

I just had a chance to quickly look at Nordstrom’s dress selection. Slim pickings at the moment. They do not look like they’ve added their Fall collections yet…when you have a chance, tell us more of what you’re looking for, color, size, style, price range so we can be on the look out for you.

I can heartily recommend chocchipcookie’s services. Finding a dress was one of the biggest challenges I faced re my D’s September wedding. Thanks to her input, and that of others here, I can now focus on the minor issues! ;)

Awe shucks, JEM! ;)

It was my pleasure. Everyone had great dress links, I just happen to be the one who found what you were looking for at that moment! I’m very glad that I was helpful to you in finding that special dress for such a special occasion.

It’s somewhat therapeutic for me looking at various dress websites…I enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Happy to help out just like so many other posters have too.

I am severely fashion-challenged, and it’s really good to know that when I go into MOB-dress panic someday, you people will be around to help me. :)

They saved my life! :)

seriously, not sure I’d have gotten through the whole wedding experience without the CC help here and on my wedding thread!

PS mominva:

You may also want to check out TJformals dot com they happen to have a section of petite mother’s dresses and many of the dresses seem to come in several colors. Maybe you’ll find something of what you’re looking for on that site! :)

Oops, no “s” at the end of formal!

Thanks, CCC, I am the MOG,
I am putting this task on hold while enjoying two weeks at the beach (really do not want whole extended family’s input).
Quite frustrated that I have had 2 different email notifications that wait listed dress was now available from Nordstrom. Once it let me order, then cancelled the order, item was no longer available. Second time, no longer available before I ordered.
I will check out the TJ recommendation.

Just want to check in before we leave for Russia.
The dress decision was so much more fun with help from all of you!

I have to laugh at how hard we try to control the variables we can control. There are so many things that we cannot control.
I will wear shapewear as a matter of course, although I doubt that it truly makes the MOG dress fit differently.
I have some wonderful Via Spiga pumps that are fairly comfortable. I recently wacked and bruised my toe on some furniture during a power outage. I sure hope I can wear the shoes.

I have been using weights to tone my upper arms, although I am fairly thin and I doubt that anyone will even notice my arms. Totally out of my control is the peeling skin on my tan arms, the result of several blissful hours spent kayaking three weeks ago. I like the tan for the sleeveless dress. I seldom burn or peel. Now I am scaley. Oh well! I hope the herbal body scrub works to eliminate the flakey stuff.
One week until the wedding. I wish I had spent more time learning to read Cyrillic.

Best wishes to all of you!

^ How exciting, merlin! Best wishes to you, the bride and groom, et alia!
Please give us a full detailed report when you have returned and relaxed some!

How exciting, merlin! Oh, those toes! Make sure to pack some moleskin and band-aids to keep those toes happy and have a wonderful time!

OK, folks, here is an update:

I spent an afternoon this week hitting a local bridal shop and a Macy’s; it’s too late to order via a bridal shop (for November) and most of what Macy’s had in my size didn’t flatter my short heavy pear shape. I did buy one iffy (if I slim down a bit) short sequined dress in violet which will need sleeve shortening if I keep it:
[Patra Dress, Long-Sleeve Beaded Sequin - Dresses - Women - Macy’s](http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/patra-dress-long-sleeve-beaded-sequin?ID=678651&CategoryID=5449&LinkType=#fn=BRAND%3DPatra%26DRESS_OCCASION%3DGuest%20of%20Wedding%26sp%3D1%26spc%3D8%26ruleId%3D80%26slotId%3D4)

Nordstrom’s finally came through with the smaller size of my waitlisted dress:
[J Kara Embellished Chiffon Dress (Petite) | Nordstrom](http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/j-kara-embellished-chiffon-dress-petite/3486752?cm_em=&cm_mmc=email_tran-_-7/10/2013%208:06:38%20PM-_-waitlist-_-product_title)

I am waiting for one of my daughters to come see me in them; but if she likes the J Kara, I am done. I can wear it long or I think it will work in tea-length, too.

I haven’t seen the bride’s dress, can’t remember if she told me length; bridemaids are in short dresses.

I have 3 pairs of shoes coming next week from Zappos which will work with either dress.

This thread has been heaven sent. Thanks you all, particularly Chocolatechipcookie! Garland and I are cut from the same cloth with regards to our lack of affinity to dresses. JEM and I could wear each other’s clothes.

Off to figure out some rehearsal dinner options.

Well hi mominva! :)

So, you are a MOG and the wedding is in November? Did you decide on Plum colors? I think that will look very nice with S&P hair color. What size are you looking for again?

I just found this one at Nordstrom:

[J Kara Sequin Bodice Chiffon Dress & Sheer Embellished Jacket (Petite) | Nordstrom](http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/j-kara-sequin-bodice-chiffon-dress-sheer-embellished-jacket-petite/3378156?origin=category&BaseUrl=Formal)

It reminds me of the one you picked out but it’s another style just in case you didn’t see it before. What colors are the bridesmaids dresses? Does the bride have a color in mind for you? What color will the MOB be wearing? The first dress is very pretty! Why would you shorten the sleeves? I’m a pear shape too. Would that first dress style be flattering for us pear shapes? Yikes, I have two boys and am no where ready to be a MOG! They are currently 20 and 17.

Tell me more info and I’ll be on the hunt!

[Beaded Jacket Gown | Lord and Taylor](http://www.lordandtaylor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/en/lord-and-taylor/womens-apparel/wa-gowns-evening/beaded-jacket-gown-0114-2711e--1)

Here’s another one very similar to your pick, but I forgot to see if it comes in petite! Do you need a petite size?

Mominva–so glad this thread is working for you! Not only are we none-dress people, we are apparently both short heavy pears! Glad you found a dress which is working for you–it’s lovely!

Hi all,
Yes I’m MOG. G is my middle child, only son, first to wed.

I did not decide on Plum, the manufacturers did that for me. The only other dresses, with sleeves, for my body type were in Navy. My MIL has picked navy and the bridesmaids are in black. I was hoping for a pewter or silver but would have been happy with a dark teal or cranberry in a flattering style.
MOB is a step and has deferred to me.

As a practical person, I started out being attracted to dresses with jackets. But then thought how the jackets tend to shift just as the shutter snaps, so sleeves it is!

The first dress is a ‘not awful’ iffy, if my plan to slim down and tone up is a success, it could work. The dress is not a petite, the dress length works OK, but the sleeves are well past my wrists.

If my daughter likes the J Kara tomorrow, that will be the dress.
If bride’s is long, I will keep mine long; but it will work shorter, too.

I have pewter/silver shoes coming from Zappos, which will work with either dress.
But if the J Kara is the one, I think bronze could be better with the beading.

Sounds like you’re all set and on your way! Best wishes for a wonderful wedding! Hope your D’s like the dress you chose and you can concentrate, like you said, on all the other details! Exciting!

I don’t know the price of the JKara dress in Nordstrom as it comes up “unavailable”. Belk sells the dress for $208, free shipping and there is a 15% coupon available until Wed.
