Dress Your Hamburger/ Hot Dog

Yum. We’ve seen eggs on burgers at several local restaurants! Most recently at Ascend (their burger is awesome and pretty much the only “affordable” dish at that place, lol, but the views are hard to beat). Such burgers are a variation of the French sandwich known as “croque madame”

A burger with a fried egg on it is called a, “Hangover Burger.”

A burger (anything) with a fried egg on it is called a perversion to be thrown into the trash.

I don’t eat eggs and won’t allow hard-boiled eggs in my house as the smell makes me sick.

I haven’t bought ground beef since the 90s. I do like Amylu Chicken burgers with cheese, ketchup and pickles, and Kirkland Chicken sausage instead of hot dogs (also with ketchup and pickles).

I do like a Culver’s burger though, again just cheese, ketchup and pickles. No other restaurant burgers for me…

I don’t eat hamburgers or hot dogs, but with a salmon or turkey burger, I’ll add kimchi, a fried egg and spicy gochujang sauce. :face_savoring_food:

I love an egg on just about everything.

Hot Dog - I like either a Chicago dog or a traditional one with ketchup, mustard, relish, onion. Chili dogs are good, too.

Hamburgers - My mainstay is just mustard, pickles and onions. I also love a cheese burger with blue cheese. And for a fast food option, I like In-N-Out burgers.

I don’t eat or like hot dogs.

On hamburgers, my preferred bread/bun is sourdough. My least favorite bun is potato. I’d prefer chicken or salmon as meat, rather than beef, although I also like beef. I find that bacon especially enhances burgers. I always get fresh lettuce and tomato, sometimes spinach, green pepper, or grilled onions depending on other toppings. Avocado can really enhance the burger, if there is the right combination of toppings, particularly no cheese. If I get cheese, I prefer swiss, provolone, or mozzarella over American, cheddar, or pepperjack… always well melted.

I always order burgers (and almost anything else) dry – no mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, dressing, oil topping, special sauce, etc. Mayonnaise is especially bad and will ruin the burger. I could tolerate mustard/ketchup, but would much prefer actual fresh tomatoes over ketchup with vinegar and other stuff added to the tomato-like base. For both taste and how it impacts how I feel and performance, I’d prefer no added salt/sodium, but this is impossible unless I prepare ingredients my self. Among well known chains, my favorite sandwich is Habit Burger Chicken Club which contains the following combination:

  • Habit Burger Chicken Club – Sourdough bread, marinated chicken breast, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado (I change to “light”). I order without mayo.

While on a 20+ mile hiking trip today, I had the following 2 sandwiches. I realize number 2 deviates from a “burger”, but it’s the same topping and ingrendient principle listed in my earlier summary.

  1. Carls’ Jr Sourdough Star – Sourdough bread, charbroiled beef patty, bacon, Swiss cheese (substitute), grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes. I order without mayo.

  2. Subway “Chicken, Bacon, and Ranch” (without ranch) – Italian herbs and cheese bread, rotisserie chicken, bacon, provolone cheese, lettuce, spinach, green pepper, tomatoes

… part of a loco moco.

A “hamburger” for the purpose of this thread can be made of any protein - after all, the traditional hamburger isn’t made of ham!!

Same goes for “hot dog” - it can be a brat, chicken sausage or whatever mimics a traditional hotdog.

And a lamb burger has been on my mind now!

My personal Big Five burgers:

  1. The Basic – American, ketchup, mustard, pickle, onion
  2. The Deluxe – American, ketchup, mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle
  3. Classic Bacon - American, bacon, ketchup, mayo, lettuce, tomato
  4. The Mac – American, 1000 Island, mayo, lettuce, diced onion, pickle
  5. Supercheese – American, cheddar, provolone, onion, choice of sauce(s)

I prefer my patties thick & juicy, rather than smashed.

Hot Dogs:

  1. Chili, cheddar, onion
  2. Cheddar, ketchup, mustard, diced onion, relish
  3. Cheddar, ketchup, mustard

Chicago style hot dogs only. If you put ketchup on it, it ceases to be a Chicago style dog. Period. End of story. You have messed with the sweet / savory ratio that makes it Chicago style. It’s why the neon green relish can’t be substituted with regular relish. It’s much less sweet than other relish.

Hamburger. Thick and rare only ….no smash burgers. No cheese ( my family doesn’t keep kosher but we don’t blatantly mix milk and meat). Lots of ketchup. Carmelized onion. No lettuce pickle or tomato.

Oooh, not me! I like mine thin, and extremely well done. Actually, let me just tell the truth: I like them burned.

We are mostly vegetarian (eat some fish) so we eat veggie burgers and veggie hot dogs.

I like a Carolina slaw dog! There used to be a great hot dog guy in town named Squeaky. He had the best Carolina style veggie dogs with veggie chili and slaw.

I’m not a purist, though. Not a huge fan of raw onions, but I will try pretty much anything else vegetarian on a hot dog or burger.

I love ketchup and as my kids’ 3rd grade teacher’s t-shirt said “I put ketchup on my ketchup”. I also like Trader Joe’s whole grain mustard.

Yes to dill pickles and sweet pickles and relish or chow chow of any kind. Yes to mustard, ketchup, mayo, sriracha, gochuchang. Yes to kimchi, to sauerkraut, to arugula, to avocado, to grilled onions (just not a fan of raw) to grilled mushrooms, fried eggs, egg salad, beets (place nearby used to do a great veggie Beet Burger).

Tomato on a burger is a must for me. And I would happily eat it diced on a veggie dog too. Need some green leaves on my burger too – lettuce, spinach, arugula, kale – all good.

I don’t usually have cheese on my burger or hot dog because my husband can’t eat it and I just don’t feel the need for it, but I wouldn’t turn down a cheesy veggie burger.

You’re pretty loyal to American cheese. I’m not against it, just curious in nearly all your forms why you prefer that over another cheese.

Hamburger meat, ketchup, BBQ sauce, relish, grilled onions, tomato, lettuce.

Hot dog - in Detroit chili dog (coney) with chili, mustard and onions…..and I add ketchup. I like the sweetness contrast.

Hot dog anywhere else - grilled onions, mustard, ketchup, relish.

Yes, indeed! While visiting my brother last September, we went to Lafayette Coney Island for the first time since high school. I posted above that I rarely eat hot dogs, but I’ll make an exception for these and that ambience (still don’t eat the bun, must use fork). I miss Detroit. I grew up Downriver.

There is a chain called Japadog mostly in Canada, but with one location in the US and one location in Vietnam, which has some interesting takes on hot dogs:
