Lettuce, tomato, Swiss or cheddar cheese , ketchup , maybe bacon on a hamburger. Hot dog- just mustard.

Unless you are in New Orleans:

Favorite hot dog would be a Vienna Beef split and grilled on a lightly toasted bun with deli mustard and chopped onion.

For me, hamburgers are all about the quality and taste of the beef. Medium rare (or even rare; beef tartare on a bun  ). I’m happy with just ketchup but will accept a thin slice of onion and lately maybe some lettuce. But I want a thick juicy burger.

Local New Zealand based restaurants have lamb burgers which are delicious. Bare Lil Lamb - lamb + beetroot + blue cheese + mint jelly + garlic aioli + tomato chutney on a toasted brioche bun.

So I went to go watch a White Sox game a few year’s ago. On 35th street a few blocks from the stadium is a known hot dog stand with the food being “normal “price compared to the ball park. I went there with my son and “I “asked for ketchup. I had to ring a bell and declare something that I forgot and then they gave me ketchup. Lol. I asked them if I had to go through that if I wanted the ketchup for my fries? Lol.

I don’t really make hamburgers or hot dogs at home any more so I’m usually only getting one on the rare occasion it’s the most appealing item on the menu. If they have it I like sautéed mushrooms and Swiss cheese. Or else something elaborate. There’s one place we do takeout that has a burger with bourbon peach compote and a few other things that is delicious. I rarely eat hog dogs after eating way too many when my sons were young (same with pizza) but if I do it’s all beef with ketchup and spicy mustard only.

Would rare be more risky for burgers and other ground beef compared to steaks, since surfaces of the meat could become contaminated from the animal to the kitchen? Ground beef is all surface that may have touched hard to clean things (like the grinder) and may be made of meat from many animals.

Absolutely more risky. I believe the recommendation is for “no pink” in hamburgers, to ensure they are cooked thru

Has anyone mentioned Cincinnati chili dog? I don’t get it, but it’s a definite thing. The addition of cinnamon or whatever to the chili is not up my alley at all.

Skyline chili on a hot dog - a Cincinnati product. I like a chili dog but I don’t care for Skyline chili because of the cinnamon/like spices.

Yes it’s a thing - and my favorite way to eat hotdogs

Hamburger – an Oklahoma-style onion burger, with spicy brown mustard.

Hot dogs – all beef, with spicy brown mustard and one of the following: sauerkraut, onions, green tomato relish. (Although I have fond memories of eating foot-long hot dogs with chili and yellow mustard when I was 13 years old and spending the summer with my cousins in southwest Virginia.)

Had a Kobe beef burger yesterday with sharp white cheddar cheese, tomato from the garden, raw red onion served in a lettuce wrap. It was delicious.

Re: raw hamburgers. The memories of the Jack in the Box E. coli outbreak are still fresh in my mind. A steak grilled rare is much safer than a ground beef patty. I don’t take any chances.

(Didn’t mean to respond to ucbalum.)

Given what’s in some hot dogs, I’ll take a chance with the E. coli burger. :joy:

No, I don’t ask for MR or R burgers at a drive through, only at places that source their own beef and grind in house.

I saw a japadog stand at a beach town pier in LA recently. Can’t remember which town.

We order our buns from an Italian bakery nearby. We can specify the size - we like the bun & burger size to match so stuff doesn’t slop over the sides.

I have fond memories of Jack in the Box from the 70’s. I would still order a “dog meat” taco if they had one around me!

Was it 60 Minutes that did the thing about hot dogs? I think so….and I didn’t eat them for decades after that. And the book “The Jungle” almost turned me into a vegetarian.
