Dressing Young 2025

I have my fingers crossed for the weather - I’ll take anything but rain!

I think that’s a really pretty dress. And it sounds like you have a good plan for adapting to various weather possiblities. (I had to do that too for son’s Boston afternoon college graduation. For daughter’s, tis good the early morn graduation was casual since we arrived at stadium at 7am- twas quite chilly in Colorado, wore many layers).

Yes - we will also be arriving at the stadium early for an 8:30 am start. I’ve warned my MIL to wear winter layers even though it’s May in Virginia. She will undoubtedly complain.

As the dates get closer, I will decide whether to flip my outfits and wear the dress to the 4pm business school graduation (also outdoors).

I can relate to the comments about wanting to buy nice things buy not having any need for them. I’ve tried to tell myself lately that I’m better off paying full price for something when I need it than buying something because I might need it.
I have had a hard time getting rid of clothes post-retirement. I have donated plenty, but I could probably donate much more and not notice it gone.

Thoughts opinions on the textured mary jane trend? While new shoes are not technically on my “need” list, I do tend to put shoes in a category of their own (you can never have too many pairs, IMO). I just ordered these: Margot Mary-Jane Square-Toe Mary-Jane in Nude Peach & Black | VIVAIA

I see these a lot in fashion blogs, and they look particularly cute with wider leg capris. (I see a lot of pointy toes too but I am old enough to want the comfort of a rounder toe!) My hunch is that you would get a fair bit of wear from these as they dress up an outfit and are quite “walkable”. On the advice of my PT, I always look for good support (and generally avoided ballet flats for that reason), but your needs on that may vary.

I like the summery look of these!

Not so much a Dressing Young question as a dressing comfortably question - for shoes.

My D is getting married in August and I have been searching for shoes for several months. Complication: I wear a wide width. I have not worn heels for several years, so don’t want to wear anything high. My dress is just past my knee and is hot pink in a silk dupioni or shantung fabric with gold trim. I have been looking for neutral looking shoes.

I recently ordered 5 similar pairs in different brands off Amazon and of all the pairs, these are the ones that fit the best/hurt the least. But I wouldn’t describe them as comfortable. Are there really dress shoes that are comfortable? If so, can you suggest/recommend any that come in wide widths? (these are size 6.5)

I’m not sure if these would be dressy enough, but I’m a big fan. Bought them last year for my D20’s college commencement and I have worn them plenty since then - they are super comfortable and I’ve seriously walked miles in them. If this particular one isn’t dressy enough, I do recommend a wedge. I find it much more comfy and stabilizing then even a low heel.

I think Vionic makes very comfortable shoes although not sure they have this exact style but definitely worth a look.

Thanks - not dressy enough for this particular dress (and they don’t have any wides available). I actually have a similar pair in black, which I wouldn’t describe as comfortable, but I can handle wearing for a few hours.

Comfort is a subjective thing, unfortunately. I’d look at the brands you normally buy to see if they offer anything that looks dressy enough. Wedge heel or chunky heel are definitely better bets. My go to brands are Vionic and Paul Green. Another trick with pointy toe shoes (as some celebrities do) is to buy 1/2 size larger and stuff the toe with tissues. I’ve done it in the past; just have to make sure the shoe fits well and doesn’t flip and flop.

I’d consider buying a pair for photos and formal parts of the wedding and swapping them for a comfortable, well broken into pair for dancing etc.

Sorry picture didn’t come thru. I’ll work on it

Thanks - just looked on the Vionic and Paul Green websites. Paul Green doesn’t have wide widths. Vionic does, but unfortunately the only one that looked dressy enough also had an ankle strap. I have lymphedema in my legs with swelling around my ankles and usually find straps around the ankle to be uncomfortable.

The shoe brands I typically wear are Naturalizer and Clarks. The shoes I’ve tried so far for this wedding include Trotters, LifeStride, Cushionaire, Easy Spirit, Easy Street, Kelly & Katie, and Naturalizer.

No dancing at her wedding, so that’s not a concern. Wedding ceremony at a church, photos, and a reception at a restaurant, so maybe not on my feet a ton?

Maybe try looking at Cole Haan. I have several comfy pairs in different styles made by them.

Are you sure you need a heel? I have wide feet with lots of issues, and the most comfortable shoes have a V or criss cross strap, never across the top of the foot, and also no ankle strap. But all my dressier shoes are old so not available.

Some possibilities:

If you don’t mind across the top of the foot:

Higher heel but looks maybe comfortable:

This is the quince dress. Too loose? Too long? Would a belt help?

I got “ Lifestride Women’s Yaya Wedge Sandal” from Amazon. Bought 2 sizes and chose the one that was most comfortable and wore it to S’s wedding. I was comfortable all night and heel is pretty low. It came in wide.

I think the dress looks exactly how it’s supposed to look. It’s a light loose dress. To wear when it’s really warm out.

I like it. I think it’s cute

As far as dress shoes for a special occasion, I’m in the camp of comfortable enough.

Meaning the shoes aren’t that comfortable but they are cute and don’t give me blisters. Look good for pictures and then put on flats for later. I can walk in them.

That came quick! I ended up ordering a linen one, same style. I often get a large because I’m not tiny but also I like things roomy, but reading the reviews I ordered a medium.

I’ll let you know when I receive it (next week I think).

I think I would be annoyed by the arm holes being bigger…you might try putting a white tank underneath??? That’s just me.
