Dressing Young 2025

I have had the same thing happen to me as @Hoggirl. As if dressing up is a passive aggressive act. When it’s just too many clothes, not enough occasions!

Hence the question I asked earlier

My mil (from whom no thought seems to go through any filter anymore) asked me last week why I wore wide legged pants now. She doesn’t.

It felt like a criticism. It was definitely not a compliment.

I wore the same dress today for brunch that I wore to the baby shower last weekend. Felt like a million!

Life is too short and precious to second guess your or others clothing choices. Dress as you prefer and feel AMAZING!

Do folks change up outfits or get on a roll (if socializing with different people)?

On Thursday we accepted a Thursday last minute invite for happy hour, and I quickly threw on an outfit I’d not worn before (slacks, print top, cardigan in case cool / outdoor seating, loafers … it would have been nice enough for business casual back when I was working). Decided to wear it again for our regular beer/dinner gathering on Friday, even though one could easily away with Tshirt and sneakers at the brewpub. Then wore it again on Saturday to visit a church friend at her nursing home (and she even complimented me on the outfit). Might have worn it to church on Sunday, except tis Mother’s Day which I like to celebrate by wearing a dress.

“Know thyself.”

I allowed myself to be lured in and influenced by y’all to try the Quince swing dress. Even though I wrote upthread this style of dress would absolutely not work for me at all :rofl::rofl: But, I was tempted by this beautiful shade of red (one of the few offering of theirs that isn’t neutral/bummer rainbow), and it did look so cool and comfy.

I will say the fabric and quality seem quite good for the price. And, it’s not too big in the armholes and didn’t hit me too far above the knee. The color is absolutely fantastic.

I feel like I look like an absolute toad in it.

I take it toad isn’t complimentary!

What don’t you like about it on you?

I know you like fitted - and it isn’t. Does it have a purpose for you and your wardrobe? Grocery store trip? Meeting a friend for coffee outside in the summer? Or it it just a big no?

The color is really pretty! I’m still waiting for the deep pink to come back in stock.

Ha ha! No, looking like a toad is not desirable.

I think it makes me look at least 15 lbs heavier than I am. Maybe more. At least I possess an old lady face so no one will ask me if I’m pregnant because that’s how I think it makes me look.

I am not that chesty. I have NOT been augmented. But, I think that’s the issue since it just hangs down straight from my chest?? Plus, there is a lot of fabric in the back, too.

Good lesson for me to not be overly influenced whether suggested by friends or trendiness or whatever!

I actually like it on you. It’s a style I feel perfectly comfortable in. I realize I tend to wear clothes some would say are too big for me, so I’m trying to do better, but I like a dress like this, and it’s totally fine on you.

It’s a lovely color, and it looks nice with the shoes. Not a dressy dress. Just a casual, cool dress you’d wear in place of shorts. But if you don’t feel good in it, by all means return it. No use hanging on to something you won’t wear.

What @Colorado_mom said. I like the dress on you and I love the color. But if you aren’t comfortable in it/ don’t feel good on it, you won’t wear it.

I think we have similar builds and I am not comfortable in that style either. I feel like I am in a potato sack. I think it might be the long torso.:woman_shrugging:t3:

I think it’s adorable on those who like it but not my style either. Different strokes.

You could take in a couple of darts in the back to make it more fitted.

I love the color and think it looks nice on you. I like a more fitted silhouette on my body type but could totally see this as something I’d throw on over a bathing suit.

If you don’t immediately love it, don’t keep it.

Yes, I’ve always regretted keeping things I thought might “grow on me.” I don’t do that any more. If I don’t love it from the start, I return and have more space for things I LOVE! :growing_heart: :two_hearts:

I don’t have time or bandwidth for “nice…..but…..”

I like the color and I think it’s cute – all in a beachy sort of way. I could see it being very useful on a trip to a resort where you wanted something to throw over a bathing suit or to wear to lunch or to tour-- cool, breezy, not overly casual.

With that said, if you’re not loving it, send it back. No need to put something in your closet that’s not going to get worn. (I am far more ruthless when I shop in person, so ordering online is its own problem!)

ok, I feel comfortable saying this because I have seen enough from the neck down photos of you to know that you have a very slim figure…that dress does not do it for you. The only thing I can think to try to make it work is to maybe try a belt and then flounce it out just a touch on top? But honestly, other than the color, I don’t think it’s a keeper on you.

I also wondered if @Hoggirl unbuttoned a couple buttons on top to open up the chest a big more and wore a not so flat shoe if that would elevate the look.

This may sound silly but your body language in the photos “looks” like you don’t care for it! I feel like your stance is slouched a bit and not owning it like you do when you are wearing something you love!

But yes truly, if it’s not your vibe, send it back! Glad you could see though that the quality is good for the prices and that maybe another item on the website that is more fitted will be your vibe!

Thanks, all! I appreciate all the feedback.

My point in posting was to be a lesson NOT to do what I did. Which was getting lured in by a nice price but for a style that just doesn’t work for me - no matter how cute on others or how on trend it might be. Not everything works for everyone.

I love that we all share on this thread, but our style preferences are all different. A good thing!! Otherwise, we’d all wear matching uniforms like space aliens in movies do!

I can be easily influenced too!
I have a similar dress from Faherty. On a really hot humid day it is very comfortable but I don’t find I look my best. It’s not the kind of dress you wear a belt with and opening a few buttons isn’t going to change much.
I always appreciate all the recommendations on this thread!

Ooooh, I’m saying that the next time someone says that to me.
