Dressing Young 2025

Also I just checked care instructions on the lovely Farm Rio dress. It’s handwash and dry only—no machine. These things matter to me.

Handwash is done on a handwash cycle in the washer. Hang dry is done in the dryer set on fluff without heat. That’s how I handle all bras, lace, cashmere, athletic wear, and similar handwash only items. I don’t remember the last time I had to do actual handwashing!

Hmmm, good to know that works. I’m always skittish about handwash labels.

If it says “handwash,” it means the garment can get wet but there is something that can be destroyed by a machine with an agitator. If it says “dry clean only,” then one has to be selective and strategic about washing. Some dry clean only items can be washed, some absolutely cannot be washed. A cashmere sweater? Goes in the washer with no heat and no high spin. A lined blazer? Dry clean. That sort of thing.

I wash on my machines delicate cycle and hang to air dry.

In retirement, most things (except sheets and towels) get air dried on a rack at our house. I have the time, and in our dry climate clothing dries quickly… adds a bit of humidity to the house. It all started when my husband decided he likes travel underwear, which tends to shrink in the dryer. So air dry requirements no longer deter me.

If something is particularly delicate, I put it in a bag before washing too. I hang my things to try.

I have never ordered from Avara before, though I see their ads often. Many of their clothing items are a bit too skewed toward the puffy sleeve genre for me, but I’d been eying this one for a while. They are having a sale on sale this holiday weekend, and I got it for $35. I’m hoping it’s a winner for me since I am so long-waisted.

I think that will be a knock out on you. Great deal.

I’m mostly finished packing for our upcoming road trip, 4+ weeks visiting family/friends… includes some beach locations. Although there is nothing super fancy planned, except for maybe church once with Dad, I decided to bring some dresses. We go out to eat a lot, and it will be hot/humid - wanted items that could be cool, but nicer than shorts. Probably I will often wear the khaki skort. But… I was indecisive, and there are 4 dresses packed, including an ancient longish Fresh Produce dress my husband and I love that will likely be used for beach. Two of the dresses are new. Turns out they are all sleeveless (unusual for me) and pocketless (also unusual, but I’m packing a small white crossbody crochet purse - lol, something I won’t leave on the chair at a restaurant). My white sweater and shirt-jacket can be used with any.

No need for myself… but if anybody needs a formal-ish maxi, this is only $24.99 and has lots of sizes left (in regular, petite and tall). Good reviews.

Super cute, Colorado_mom!
Good luck with the packing!

The other day I ran into Target to pick up a new beach coverup, and ended up getting this: Women's Mini Sundress - Universal Thread™ Coral Red XS: Lightweight Cotton Blend, Scoopneck, Sleeveless, Side Pocket : Target I got it in the coral, which is not a color I would normally choose but it is remarkably flattering.

Not only did I wear it over my bathing suit all weekend, but I ended up putting it back on as a regular dress for a leisurely bike ride to the farmer’s market and then out to dinner and a concert that evening. It was so comfortable and flattering that I returned to Target and picked up two more colors. I think I am done with shorts forever.

I purchased another style from Target in a beautiful green and liked it so much I found a black print and have been wearing as a swim cover up. Yours were a better deal ( I think mine were $23/each).

Super cute - is there a modest ruffle at the bottom? Do you wear bike shorts or similar underneath?

I have it in two sizes (S and M)…the smaller size works fine for over a bathing suit or super casual outings but is probably too short to be appropriate otherwise (I’m sure my rear would be on display if I were to bend over). I could wear bike shorts under it. The larger size covers all, but is an overall roomier look.

I found, and bought, a new swimsuit a couple of weeks ago. One bottom and two different tankini tops. Of course they’re on sale now, but I haven’t had a properly-fitting suit in years so meh.
