I do well with light colors! Have a few white eyelet pieces that look good after many wears.

HImom I am exactly the same. Too messy. And I eat a bunch of small meals throughout the day vs a large lunch/dinner. Know thyself!
My wardrobe has evolved to capsule with almost all black pants many black sweaters/blazers. It’s just better all the way around 
(but love the white eyelet dress!)

For many years I wore mostly black. But as I got older I realized black does my pasty white face no favors. I still wear mostly black, navy or gray on the bottom, but try for more color on top.

I wore so much black when I worked. About 10 years ago, my DH said, “black really isn’t your shade”. So now I only wear black on the bottom, a shell or mixed in with other shades if a top. He was right.
I remember watching Desperate Housewives, and the Latina wife (we have the same hair and skin tone), was grousing at a funeral because she had to wear black and mentioned it wasn’t her color.

Interestingly, SW interprets the “nude” not as a color but as a style - the foot looks almost bare. The beige color is listed as “adobe.”

I would mix and match if there is another element that can tie everything in (like a fabric pattern with both gold and silver beads or threads).

Excuse the photo taken in a construction zone, but here’s the dress I mentioned previously with a light purple camisole. I tried it with a red one, but the shade wasn’t right so I think the purple works better (even though it’s not the exact shade of the trim). Any thoughts about whether or not I should try another option?

I think it is totally fine.

A little rant about people who wear heavy makeup when trying clothes in stores. I bought a blouse that was shipped from a store to me. The blouse had obvious makeup stains at the neckline and on the sleeve. Ugh. It was the last one in my size. Thankfully, it was still available from a different retailer although a bit more expensive. I bought it anyway because a button front blouse that fits my chest is so worth it!
