Dressing Young 2025

I’ve been in France for several days, and I’m seeing shoulder pads on the “cool girls.”

Whoo hoo.. In that case I have a couple of super ‘cool’ leather jackets from the 80’s which I will take out of the back most part of the closet.

I may be an 80’s girl at heart, but one thing I will never go back to are shoulder pads! RIP!

I’m with you here!

I feel that with the “poncho” comment, it was sort of directed at me? Anyway, this IS the Dressing Young forum, not the “wear whatever you want” forum. So, asking questions about whether certain styles are in and youthful (appropriately of course”), shouldn’t be shamed .

Where are you? I just got a couple weeks ago.

I totally wasn’t shaming! I said, if I want to wear a poncho, I’m gonna wear it.

Re-read my post - didn’t see where I shamed but my apologies if you interpreted it that way.

I wouldn’t exactly say shamed but the first sentence is:

“I think social media has been successful in manipulating women to be overly concerned about whether they are always in style or always on trend”

To me it read as if I’m interested in being stylish then I’m being influenced by social media to be overly concerned.

Which I don’t think I am. And even if I was, that’s my concern and no one else’s. I definitely don’t feel manipulated

I was interested in fashion before social media. Now I like that instagram (and this thread frankly) helps me feel confident and stylish. It’s fun to me.

I’m not wanting to be confrontational. And I’m thrilled for every person to be the person they want to be.

I’m interested in being stylish too but on my own terms, not anyone else’s definition of what’s in or out.

If you don’t feel pressured or manipulated by social media marketing, great!

Again, the gist of my post was wear whatever you want, when you want. I even did a second post outing myself for wearing old and out of style clothing today.

Geez, so much for this thread being mostly friendly and lighthearted.

Ok, thanks. I just feel this thread is for those trying to dress fashionably and youthful. I guess I don’t see where the “wear what’s comfortable” attitude fits when we are asking questions and thoughts of other like minded ladies how to do that.

That’s fair. Point taken.

I did not take @CollegeNerd67 post as critical or shaming. I’m surprised at the reactions. Maybe a case of words online not translating to what was meant or how it should be understood?

There is not just one way to “dress young” . That along with “style” is subjective. I certainly don’t dress like some on this thread but I do think I have a style and it is not frumpy and aged. To me that fits “dressing young(er). But I imagine my style would NOT be the cup of tea of others here.

Can we not be ourselves and comfortable AND dressing young?

If there are metrics to the thread maybe let’s get them spelled out - because there is a good chance some of us will not fit the metrics!

After all, what is “dressing young”? Like a 40 Year old if you’re 50? Like a 50 yr old if you’re 60? Or are some looking to dress like our daughters or DIL’s who are 35?

I wear some clothes that I’ve had for decades so I guess that’s dressing young? I was younger when I bought them! Although I prefer to think of them as classic or timeless. I’ve certainly participated in this thread without thinking it only covered youthful fashion. And it has digressed as so many threads do. Maybe we need a “What not to wear” thread?

Going back to @conmama ‘s poncho… I love it. Google sez ponchos are being sold so they should be still in!

I’d wear it over a neutral outfit and let it be the star of the outfit. One issue is that it might be a bit on the warm side to be worn indoors, but on a crisp, chilly fall day it should be perfect for an outdoor stroll!

Right now we are in Lyon. We started in Chamonix and went to Switzerland, then Lake Geneva and Lake Annecy along the way.

Also really like the poncho of conmama. I remember loving the poncho I had when I was 8 (felt so cool wearing in school!) so I get the general concern that a poncho might be considered a bit old fashioned.

But it’s so fresh with the fur collar - and I’ve seen ponchos come back so many times over the years (in various shapes and styles) that it seems to be a unique piece that can make an outfit fun!

I enjoy trying to figure out (and hearing how others manage) the various considerations we all have in wanting to dress kinda fresh and stylish. A refreshing topic with all else going on!

I think these days it could be hard to follow trends / youthful preferences… since there is so much various social media etc. Not like the times decades ago where a more limited number of fashion houses and magazines led the way. (I just told a story this week about growing up in Kingston NY, about 2 hours from NYC. Folks would joke it was 2 years behind NYC on fashion. Poughkeepsie/closer where I later lived only 1 year behind.) Current “fast fashion” capabilities mean lots faster turnaround on trends. All the more reason to hang on to certain beloved items that are stylish and look good on you, since the rules today seem more fluid and personal.

I think I mentioned here that I bought a pair of wide legged green twill pants. Mine are from Paige and I bought them at Anthropologie.

I’m getting a lot of use out of them. They are comfortable and easy to wear. Easy to pair with a variety of basic tops. I’ve also paired them with a denim jacket.

I’ve gained weight or the weight I have shifted so I’ve invested in some new pants. I’m also going on a cruise where I’d like to dress a little nicer than my usual day to day. Where I end up in athletic clothes.

I also bought a pair of printed pants that I bought at a boutique in town. They are brown and black. I think they will work well for touring. We are on a Mediterranean cruise

The big piece I invested in was this dress. Do I NEED a nice dress? No, definitely not. Do I have a wedding in February where I can also wear this dress? Yes. Am I justifying a purchase that isn’t exactly necessary? Also yes I ordered the turquoise and the dark blue. Both are great but I decided to keep the blue, I’m in love!

That is a stunning dress! I just stopped into Anthropologie yesterday and saw a pair of wide leg cream soft cord pants. Thankfully not in my size! But my birthday is around the corner!
