Hello fellow traveler! I’ve been in Beaune, and tomorrow we’re headed to Lyon.

I’ve seen young women in all sorts of clothes, from very, very, very short skirts to wide-legged jeans. The stores here have a lot of vests of all kinds - puffy, quilted, faux unsheared wool - although I haven’t seen them on anyone yet. Short puffy coats worn with scarves are a uniform for all ages.

The women older than me seems to be in flowery blouses and slacks, hiking-esque outfits of jeans, quilted vests, and boots.

No joggers/athleisure to be seen. The only women I’ve seen in leggings have been quite obviously exercising. Plenty of tennis shoes/trainers on everyone.

We saw two groups come into the restaurant we ate at tonight. The men were all in jeans. Women in jeans and some nicer slacks. It’s a pretty nice place and we made an effort to dress well, so it was a shocker to me, at least. I doubt Paris in 3 weeks will dress that way.

I hear you on those VERY short skirts.

Speaking of coats, in the places we were (we were on a cycling trip, so not high fashion towns) the very light Patagonia down jacket or similar was the one I noticed most.

I can’t say I noticed any particular style re: how people were dressed, but I did notice almost no tight leggings and lots of people were wearing jeans of all varieties. I noticed younger women seemed to wear wider leg jeans, but not many barrel leg ones, although there were plenty of other styles too.

Have we talked about the socks thing yet?

My D20 is all in on it…ruffle socks with maryjane doc martens. After initially scoffing, and after decades of being committed to no-show socks, I admit…the idea of some cute socks with my loafers or maryjane flats is starting to grow on me. I may take the plunge a buy a cute pair or two this week and try it out. Let’s see if I can pull it off without feeling ridiculous.

Go for it!

Time and place of course for most “fashion” ideas.

Anyone happen to have these barrel jeans/pants? I love the look (and this color) on the model and am wondering how the length goes. I like a bit of a cropped look as shown.

We don’t have a Gap (sigh) anymore to see anything in person

I was served this ad up otherwise would not have looked!

In the early 90’s, short socks, especially with ruffles and a pattern, were the trendiest thing worn with pumps. I tried, but just couldn’t pull it off with my height. I felt it looked best on smaller, shorter women. It didn’t last long, but cute if you could pull it off.

One style I always liked in my late teens, early 20’s, were the socks that overlaid the top of knee high boots. It sort of gave the jeans a little something extra, a fun accessory.

Agree about France. No leggings, lots of jeans, in the fashion you stated. Everyone just looked so much better dressed, even casually. Locals and Tourists alike.

We were just in London (and now in York). When temp in 50s with dampness and wind, it can feel Cold. Many people, including me sometimes, wore thin puffer jackets. I saw plenty of sneakers / running shoes but probably not as many as a few years ago in Europe (though this trip is a little later in the autumn season). Not many leggings, unless others were like me wearing them as a base layer.

I keep seeing mention of “leggings or not” - not judging one way or another but do you find yourself wearing leggings often (daily? 3-5 x week?) and are you wearing them more often in a styled way (like you can leave the house in this outfit) or just with a top that DOES NOT leave the house?

Also what is your “one step up “ from leggings - jeans? joggers? Something like else?

In colder months, I wear Lulu Aligns as tights with shorter dresses for coverage and warmth.

I wear leggings for exercising only or around the house.

When I’m traveling or going out, I wear jeans or cotton slacks.

Same!

I wear leggings to the gym, so that also means I wear leggings for the errands that follow and around the house when I get home.

To go out, I almost always wear jeans or something equivalent (cords, twills, etc.) A few years ago, I bought a pretty nice pair of heavy sweat pants that look a bit better than something you’d wear to the gym. I’ve worn those on a flight or on colder days, usually with a sweater, when I’ve been wanting pajama comfort but didn’t want to look too frumpy.

Speaking of jeans vs other types of pants, I just bought a pair of most expensive sweatpants I’ve ever owned. Rag and Bone makes a line called Miramar. From a distance, it is hard to believe it is not denim!

One has to examine the fabric really closely to notice that some of the stitching and back pockets are actually printed on the fabric!

I’m eyeing this dress, too, but not ready to pay $$$. Note the stitching… it is just a pattern printed on the fabric! There are no stitches.

Leggings only for exercise anymore. If I’m lounging around the house I’m wearing joggers. If I’m leaving the house, I’m wearing jeans or cotton pants.

I wear leggings often. I wear them to the gym and have no problem running errands in them. I also wear black leggings with long tunic sweaters in winter with boots, I’ll also wear them with longer blouses. It’s very acceptable in my area to go out in athletic clothing.

I’m with @mom60. I take a number of fitness classes every week ( yoga, strength and weights, dance) and do a lot of walking for fitness and to do errands. So I’m mostly wearing leggings/ joggers. People here tend to dress casually.

ETA: if I am traveling or even downtown in my city, I dress a bit less casually. Jeans or nice pants. Definitely not leggings.

One of my young colleagues was wearing these today. She said she just bought them at Gap. They looked super cute on her!
