What are the documents titled exactly?
I have all of my schedules and CSS saying they were updated 2/29
âTax Infoâ 02/13
âForeign Financial Aid applâ 01/29
âForeign Tax Returnâ 02/13
received an IDOC request yesterday but I am not actually sure which school it is for. I have Yale and Duke on my IDOC, but they were there previously, so I cannot figure out what the update is.
Did you submit the tax documents on a later date than the CSS profile?
Honestly, I donât remember. I think it was the same day but it could have been one or two days after. Why?
I submitted most of tax docs 2 days after I submitted CSS profile
Just trying to justify the date difference between the application and supporting documents.
My kid got an email to set up an interview last week. They replied via email and text and no response. Followed up again and still no response. Should they do anything else such as follow up with admissions? Thanks!
My daughter received interview invitation for Duke Kunshan U. Is this a bad sign for her admission for Duke NC? She has already been interviewed by Duke.
My understanding is that they treat their admissions decisions separately (so you could be accepted to both). Let me know if you have any questions about Duke Kunshan. I have a daughter graduating from there in May.
Iâm applying to DKU too and was wondering if accepted students are flown out to campus before enrolling. Also, do you know at all how selective DKUâs interview selection is? From the registration page it seemed like not many spots were available so it seems like some pre-screening occurred.
For the first two years they were open, they flew the students out to campus. They were supposed to do it the year my daughter started (year 3) but then COVID hit and China shut down. Then they discovered that the school was popular enough that they didnât need to fly students out - so that isnât happening any longer. There is definitely a pre-screen prior to the interviews and if you got invited for the interview, I think your chances are pretty good.
Thank you! How do you think about DKU? What will your daughterâs diploma look like? Are the students mostly from China or from the US?
I donât think my D intentionally applied for DKU. Is every applicant for Duke automatically considered by DKU?
D24 received an interview request from DKU too. It is so late in the game, I wonder if it means she is out of running for Duke and get kicked over to DKU. Well, guess weâll wait and see.
My son got interviewed during ED process. He was deferred.
My daughter will graduate with two separate diplomas, one from Duke University and the other from Duke Kunshan University (majoring with a B.S. in Global Health w/ an emphasis in biology). The population of students at DKU is majority Chinese but with a significant international population. Each class is 450-500 students with 300 of those slots being Chinese students and the remaining 150-200 slots being international. While U.S. students do make up around half the international students and the other half come from around the world. All classes are taught in English but international students are required to take Mandarin Chinese through the 202 level.
My daughter has friends from all across the world now. She has friends from the U.S. but they are probably the minority. Her best friend is a dual citizen of Brazil and Italy. Others that she is close to come from Georgia (the country), Nepal, Morocco, Spain, South Korea, Singapore, and of course, China.
The university tends to pull in students who are interested in a global experience. I know the majority of non-U.S. international students speak more than 2 languages. I do not think the majority of international students came with a strong (or any) knowledge of Chinese. My daughter did know Chinese before going. If your child has experience with other cultures - that would be a plus.
The STEM programs are very good but very tough in the intro classes. Expect to be taught with students who have been taking physics for the last 4-5 years and are ready for calculus 2/3. If you are not doing STEM they have easier classes to take in science and math.
Graduates are getting great post-bacc opportunities and being admitted into programs at top universities in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
Students study at Duke University one semester of their junior year as their study-abroad. They can choose to study elsewhere if they like, but I think almost everyone chooses Duke.
The university is not for everyone though. My youngest also applied and received the interview offer. She just withdrew her application as sheâs realized that she wants to stay close to home. It has opened up the world for my oldest though. She has had so many great leadership opportunities there and feels very much at home abroad.
One other thing I will note about Duke Kunshan. The tuition at Duke Kunshan is exactly the same as it is for Duke. However the price for room is crazy, crazy cheap and board is actually a la carte (pay as you go). So combined Room and Board for the year is ~$5600. Personally, my daughter has really kept her food costs low. I sent back in August 2022 with $2000 and sent another $1200 that December. She has never asked for another dime. She does work at the university (currently in a research lab) and earns $ there to pay for food and necessities. She has even self-funded trips around China and is currently spending a week in South Korea.
BUT there is a catch for U.S. families. Currently DKU does not qualify for any tax credit and you canât get student federal loans. 529s canât technically be used to fund the cost (but there is a way to use the $ and DKU will help with paperwork to do so - I just heard it was a pain from others). From a financial aid perspective, that means that your package will be all grants/scholarships and no loans.
I donât know if they are still doing this but my daughterâs scholarship was for a % of the tuition (so it actually increased each year as tuition went up). It ended up being one of the most financially feasible options for us and I am glad she is graduating without loan debt.
I checked with my D24. She said she did apply for DKU when making Duke application by checking a checkbox (âYou can apply for 2 universities with a single application. Why not?â). So she was not âkicked over to DKUâ. I suggest you also to check with your daughter.
Thank you for the extremely helpful information. I think the Chinese students are from rich families even though they paid cheaper tuition. Are the international students mostly with Chinese legacy?
