Early Action 2018 discussion

Accepted! Dean J said you shouldn’t post stats, so I’ll honor her wish. Congrats to everyone who got accepted!

Congratulations to accepted students, and hugs to those who aren’t as fortunate tonight. Just wanted to tell those of you still in limbo, deferred students do get in. I was one. I’ve known many others.
D is a first year there and so very happy. It’s a wonderful, wonderful place.

Damn deferred. 34 ACT, 2140 SAT, Top 10 in class of 750, OOS.

Daughter was deferred. A bit surprised. 33 ACT, 3.98 GPA, In state - but Northern Virginia.

Did you get an email saying your decision was available online?

Accepted from OOS into CAS. Have my Jefferson Scholarship interview coming up in a few weeks, have to start preparing for that.

Accepted OOS into CAS! I posted on the results page, but the short version is 36 ACT, 800 on USH, 760 on Bio E, and 740 on Math II (but didn’t send Math) for SAT IIs, 3.98UW GPA, 8 APs (all 4s and 5s), and a 7 and 6 on my IB SLs so far, 3 more APs, 4 IBs, and continuing one of my SL classes but not taking HL this year. Congratulations everyone!

OMG Guys… reading you guys’ stats make me feel uneasy… I am accepted with a 2050 SAT and OOS. I thought I got denied for sure but I got accepted. I don’t even know what happened. I just wished all of you who got deferred and denied the best of luck! Congratulations to admitted students! I am very excited about this opportunity! What a happy day!

Accepted!
I posted on the results page also, but here are the short version of my stats. I am an in-state applicant that goes to an international school.
Accepted! Found out on our way to dinner w/ the grandparents, so lots of happy screaming commenced in the car and at the restaurant haha

When do Echols decisions come out?

Deferred.
2140 (1480 CR+M)/800 Math II/740 Physics/3.363 UW GPA (but huge upward trend).

My mid-year report was the best I’ve ever had, so fingers crossed that it will get me in…

…to all of those who have been deferred, please relax and don’t sweat it. Your career will NOT hinge on whether you graduated from UVA or Tech, or JMU…it will not. It will depend on you and your abilities and interpersonal skills. My daughter is at UVA now and enjoys it, but she would have been happy at Tech also. When she went through the application process, we ran into many, many families from NOVA who were going insane fretting about their child’s prospects for admission to UVA. It doesn’t really mater that much…please keep it in perspective, especially if you plan on grad school.

My daughter was deferred to UVA. I am actually happy that she was deferred. Let me explain …

My income knocks my daughter out of any financial aid from UVA. Unfortunately due to bad planning, bad luck, a large family and an extremely disabled child I am knee deep in debt and have bad credit.

It seems that the cost of attendance is $22,000 a year at UVA in state. My daughter can get $5,500 in loans as a dependent student, plus another $4,000 in loans due to the fact I will not qualify to co-sign Plus loans.

That leaves a $12,500 gap. I don’t have that money saved up nor do I have $12,500 in disposable income to pay the gap.

Fast forward - UA gave my daughter a free ride on tuition plus a $2,500 a year engineering scholarship. The gap between scholarship, $9,500 in loans and the cost of attendance is almost zero. My big cost with the University of Alabama will be getting her there and home since we live in VA. My daughter is already in UA Honors College, UA contacts her constantly. It is clear UA really wants my daughter to attend UA.

I know the argument but UVA is a better ranked school. Maybe so but when I visited UVA, William and Mary, University of Maryland none of the schools sold me on why they were better academic schools over other schools. I cannot tell you why one school is better than another other than Newsweek says so …

You always want the best for your kids but is Newsweek ranking all it is really cracked up to be? I went to a small school in the middle of no where Appalachia and I make a good salary, 6 figures plus. How much debt is right for your kids - you will not get any help from the top ranked schools unless you are low income or your student is beyond perfect.

If you have money to spend on UVA or low income by all means go there if accepted. But for those of us caught in the middle are Universities like UVA really right? Do you really want to co-sign a Plus loan for your child and then have life smile unkindly on them in ways you could never foresee (divorce, unemployment, family expenses). Then you are on the hook for the loans?

Think long and hard about UVA and what you are getting…

Btw - We had not visited UA due to the distance and the cost - we will go in February

To be clear this is not meant to knock UVA nor sell UA. The point is to give the folks deferred or denied a different view on college that may help them understand why UVA may not be the right place for them. I am working with my daughter to keep an open mind about UVA and if my daughter is accepted compare UVA financial aid award (likely zero) to other colleges and help her make an informed decision.

Best of luck to everyone!

UA has a significantly better football program, so it’s not a complete loss.
It is still a very decent school and one can learn everything she/he wants to learn.

I don’t see it as a loss at all but a gain  . Nobody can tell me why UVA is better than UA … Professors better? Better facilities? One stat that does impress me about UVA is there graduation rate - that is first class.

Not sure why she applied to UVA if the parent already knew the family couldn’t afford it? I see this on these boards all the time, why spend money on application fees and time writing essays if you know you can’t attend?

Updated my daughter was accepted at UVA on the latest rounds of admission. Zero financial aid … UVA will not be her choice …
