Early Action - Class of 2024 Full Discussion Thread

Congratulations to all students and parents. I know some were not accepted but don’t get discouraged. I was reading some of stats and I was surprised how many students we have out there with stellar stat. Good job everyone. My son was accepted collge of business. The honors college offered.

Accepted OOS
GPA 4.0 UW; 4.8W
1400 SAT
Undecided Science
10 AP’s, strong EC’s
Not offered Honors
Small VT merit award (3K)
Likely will accept elsewhere based on significantly higher merit awards at other large state schools.

Wonder if they accepted more OOS like @ktgoingbroke to weed out the ones who won’t pay the 45k OOS tuition if they have better offers from other schools?

Accepted
In state (NoVA)
Major: Engineering
GPA: 4.1 weighted
Full IB Diploma (including Math HL, Physics HL)
SAT: 1530 (770 math, 760 English)
EC’s: Varsity Letters and captain of track team, NHS, Math NHS, VA Science Olympiad States medal, Very invested in volunteering (key club and outside of school), 2 years work experience, 16 years old, double legacy, etc

I was worried I would be waitlisted after a lot of people got deferred ED, but I think my SAT score and extracurriculars helped me get in to engineering. I think they waitlisted more people because of last year’s over accepting issue, so hopefully they start accepting people from it soon.

Good luck to everyone!

Waitlisted

In-State (Charlottesville)
Major: Engineering
GPA: 3.85 UW, 4.4 W (Top 10%)
SAT: 1480 (740 both)
13 AP classes by graduation (4s on all tests so far, bar one) [7 DE courses]
Extracurriculars: Academic Governor’s School, Varsity Soccer, Football (Captain both), NHS, AP Scholar w/ Honor, Young Life, Young Life Leader, Internship at UVA, Innovation Team, Minimal work experience.
Volunteer: 1000+ hours - Toy Lift, local food bank, volunteer WyldLife leader, a month of summer serving at YL camp, National Beta Club

Honestly, I am a bit surprised by the decision, but I respect it. I understand that admissions is a difficult job, and it’s never easy trying to identify the students who would be the “best fit” for the school. I am more disappointed in the fact that I spent a great deal of time on the scholarships (hours more than I did on the application itself), and I am not sure how that all will work out in the end. Congratulations to everyone who was accepted!

Accepted

Congratulations to everyone who got accepted!

D accepted to Architecture

Honors College indicates “Offered” - this means she has been accepted, correct?

@Snrstudent20 – Sounds like some scholarships are offered now. In the case of my S, there was a scholarship listed in his financial aid offer (link in portal next to acceptance info).

Our D accepted for Engineering
wGPA 3.95, uwGPA 3.75, 4 APs, ACT 32 Superscored. Many strong ECs w leadership positions (President Marching Band, FIRST robotics team leader), volunteer work, charity support etc…
3k merit scholarship

D was finalist in Davenport leadership scholarship but has heard nothing about this yet - has anyone else heard anything on Davenport scholarship?

@drewh02 I am very surprised you were waitlisted. These results have been very shocking to me when I see kids with high 1400’s and 1500’s along with high GPA not getting in. I just wonder if they are flushing out some of the qualified OOS who won’t attend due to cost.

congratulations to everyone who was accepted! Some other colleges allow you to put a deposit down (they either keep the fee or refund all but a portion if you opt to attend another college) and start the housing process before you have officially accepted the offer. Does VT do that or do you have to pay the $400 in order to start the housing contract application process? If you have to pay the $400 matriculation fee, is any portion of that refundable?

No Honors (figured that since he interviewed for Calhoun Discovery and didn’t get it). Received Virginia Tech Grant award.

Does anyone know the most accurate virginia tech net price calculator? Also what is virginia tech’s base in state net price?

Makes you feel any better HokieCrazy, legacy as well, waitlisted, MD res. Wife was telling me 2/22 was the day I stopped donating to VT, or my last kid got in, either way something to celebrate. Of course she was joking, and I’m not saying I’m going to stop donating to VT or wearing the gear, but 100 pct of my donations heading to my grad school this year, breaking a streak almost as long as my marriage, and I’ll be doing some clothes shopping at my grad school as a part of a school visit. No idea what I was thinking donating to SERTC.

With that petty griping out of the way, if your kid really wants VT, accept the waitlist send a letter to the VT recruiter for your kids school, making the case, stating the interest. My guess is if you can say VT is #1 they would probably make it happen in the next round 4 a kid with your sons stats. I would imagine you were the victim of yield management. Realistically I don’t see how I can get my daughter to consider VT with the options she has avail. Would have been a great fit as she fits better with the VT culture than the northeast schools she has been admitted to. Was looking forward to going back after kids left the nest, but hey da wife and i will just get on a plane and travel this great country of ours. Orange and Maroon were never really good colors for me ; )

I agree with post above @HokieCrazy. Clearly your kid is extremely well qualified for any school, including VT, and they did yield protection thinking he has other top choices. If he’s proactive in pursuing admission from the WL, I think he’ll get in soon.

@Volty123 Tuition/Room & Board is right at 24K plus there may be extra fees for certain majors

Get acquainted with the Bursar’s webpage at VT. All of your cost of attendance and net calculators are available, including the add’l $ associated with certain colleges.

That is very very surprising to me. Sounds like a you g m an they would be pursuing to attend.
