Early Action - Class of 2024 Full Discussion Thread

You have to matriculate in order to get into the housing contract pool. You can request a refund, but it may not be a full refund depending on when the request is made. I will add - please consider the impact your decisions may have on other students who are 100% accepting their offer. If you decide to hedge and pay your matriculation fee just so you can select your dorm room and then back out, you have taken a spot in line from others which could mean they don’t get the residence hall they prefer.

Wish more aid was awarded. We will be accepting NC State today. At least it opens up a spot for someone waiting. Wishing the best of luck to everyone.

Hey Drew, I came over from the Clemson page as I knew yesterday was decision day. You have a lot of character and I am impressed by you, young man. I agree with some here; there is likely a method in play, both regarding OOS money as well as an attempt to avoid the disastrous mess last year with housing. That does not make it right, especially as a resident of the state, with amazing stats, and you deserve a scholarship. I certainly hope that if this is a method, merit is still considered for waitlisted individuals. My fingers are crossed for you.

Wherever you go, you are going to be a great success. Though there are many smart, wonderful young folks out there, you really have a maturity about you that is unique. I wish you the best. We declined Clemson, as will my niece, but I am going to keep watching to see what you decide! Good luck Drew.

I think @Niblets will be what happens to many of the OOS. COA is high for OOS and you wont get much merit like you would at other large state schools. @Niblets I think you are making a smart choice NC State is a great school (my son got in but we are in same boat as you -COA may be too high)

@ShenVal18 - i totally understand and appreciate you pointing that out. VT is one of his top 3 choices so i makes sense to move forward on the housing knowing it is partially refundable. Bc all top 3 will end up in the same price range anyway - it wouldn’t come down to merit money. Thank you for helping with the additional information.

Love seeing all the truly nice people on these threads. Some schools have cut-throat type parents/students posting awful things, so it is really nice to see that not all schools have that feel/culture associated with them.

@jgwolf My daughter was accepted to Clemson, NC State, RIT, VT but our budget cannot justify spending 80K extra for OOS. All these schools have great programs! What I am so confused about is the admissions process. Many of my daughters classmates here in NC were accepted to VT with much lower stats than many people who have posted here who were waitlisted. I don’t understand? My heart aches for these kids who work so hard and now are waitlisted. I wish I had a crystal ball some days. I know my daughter today is accepting NC State and telling this to other schools so they can open spots. Wishing everyone luck for their kids!

@Niblets yes totally agree. I would also like to know all the stats IS vs OOS cause it does seem like there were alot of OOS accepted. Its hard to justify to a kid when they see others with SAT 100+ points lower and lower GPA that got in for same major that are OOS. You have some great choices and Im sure your daughter will do well at NC State. We will be down there soon to look again

@Niblets I agree! I feel a bit guilty that my son got accepted. His stats are good (3.78 uw gpa 30 ACT), but not like some of these other waitlisted kids. My heart aches too. I’m just praying that they have some amazing offers from other schools. We will be sure to determine quickly if my son will be attending or not so if he isn’t, he can open up a spot. It is between Penn State, VT and UMD engineering.

Your going to see a ton of out of state acceptances because the yield is much lower. Their is competition for out of state money so yea you may see some students out of state where VT was a reach statistically but they will be more likely to pay the out of state rates for that VT dream school.

I think that is a general theme on all the VT online communities.

I was accepted!

Update:

DS finally looked at the financial aid award and thanks for all that helped with instructions on where to find it because he didn’t see the tab on his phone.

He received the VT Scholarship of $3K for OSS (stats previously given). He’s still undecided in his decision and has some really good options to consider.

Thanks to the wonderful insight from this board we were not expecting much merit OSS based on his stats. However any amount helps so it is only one of the factors in the decision.

My son says his account isn’t showing any decision -is anyone else experiencing that? He is OOS & his stats are good - already accepted to Penn State, Clemson & MD for engineering - so would think he’s a good candidate. He’s already decided on MD (we are in state) so he’s not really concerned. I was just wondering if anyone else’s child has no decision.

@xytimes3 Are you certain that he didn’t apply regular decision?

I agree with this – my son is OOS & was accepted into Honors College in Coll of Sci (Econ) with 4.04wgpa/32ACT (so I don’t think VT was a reach for him). Other OOS posters have commented the VT is much more than their IS school & therefore, may not pick VT. But for kids from Calif who won’t get FA at the UCs, VT OOS rates are roughly equivalent to the cost of a UC (UCLA ~$35k/yr; VT will be $37k for us thanks to some scholarships).

We are in the same boat. OOS ¶. DS was 4/4 accepted in engineering to Penn State, VT, PITT and a safety. He has good stats, top 7% of his class, 3.88UW/4.228W 19 Honors/AP classes but SAT was a little lower at 1300. Good ECs though and credit for a college-level Engineering Academy class. Penn State is #1 for him as we are in-state so 40+K extra for VT is hard to justify since both are top 10 schools for his preferred major (Industrial). His grandparents live near Roanoke though and we spend a lot of time in VA so it was a strong #2. He wants to sit with it for a few weeks before making the final call, but I have encouraged him to do that sooner than later so it hopefully opens up a spot for someone else. His twin sister was 5/5 in direct-admit DPT schools so we were certainly blessed in this whole stressful college application process. PT is even more competitive it seems than engineering so she’s done the same and notified the other 4 now that she’s certain of her #1. It’s so tough. I feel for the kids who’ve been waitlisted from their top choice and wish we could give his spot directly to someone else.
