So there is a song that I keep hearing on the radio. My first thought was, “what a dumb song.” It just repeats the same thing over and over again and it reminds me of the 80s. Then . . . it reminds me of that other song from the 80s, that one that keeps getting stuck in your head but now I can’t remember for the life of me. Now the first song is stuck in my head. It’s so dang catchy that I actually wake up with it in my head although I can’t stand it. Now it’s kind of growing on me. It’s a happy sounding song. And then there’s the epically annoying song by the annoying artist with the annoying video that I reflexively turn up and car dance to when it comes on. How does this happen?!
So what are your current pet hate/love/can’t get out of your mind earworms?
I’ll start it off with:
Shut up and Dance - Walk the Moon
You Make My Dreams Come True - Hull and Oates
Shake it Off - Taylor Swift
This is your annual reminder that, following news reports about intelligence techniques, Michael Stipe once asked the Bush administration to stop playing R.E.M. music at Guantanamo Bay due to his concerns about torture. That should tell you what even he thinks of this song.
And now I’m feeling as guilty as Stipe, so I will try to make it up to you with a thematically appropriate shimmering bit of pop from one of last year’s best alternative albums.
I hate it when I get a song in my head but I can’t quite remember all the words, so I look them up. THEN, the song is implanted deeper. Yesterday, on my way to work I listened to an NPR story that mentioned the Monkees. For the next hour I kept hearing, “Hey, hey, we’re the Monkees…” (I know you don’t need that link!) I also had “Shut Up and Dance with me” stuck in my head for a whole day!
@SomeOldGuy, my daughter just told me to check out The War on Drugs …I like what I am hearing !
I suffer from chronic ear worm…when I am driving , I have to make sure that the last song I am listening to is one I can deal with because it will be stuck in my head , sometimes for hours.
Every morning when I am watching the Today Show , a commercial comes on TV for a radio station in Philly. Two songs that are on the commercial are like fingernails down a chalkboard to me.
.the first :
Shake it up
The second :
Hey Soul Sister
Last week , I took some visitors we had to see a Broadway show…I was the one who stood in the TKTS line for 1.5 hours while my husband took them on the drive by tour of Manhattan and the fix I got were for Jersey Boys…good show , but for days I had Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons songs running through my head…and now they start again
So funny–“Shut Up and Dance” is my current earworm --been in my head all weekend. Luckily, I still like it a lot (and adore both dance mashup videos that go with it.)
Darn it, beerme–I’d be okay, but my H has a terrible habit of mindlessly singing earworms out loud, and I mentioned Small World to him. No no no no.
lje2–I love The War on Drugs. My favorite is “Baby Missiles.”
Y’all need to go back to the prior Walk the Moon album and listen to “Anna Sun.” It’s just as catchy, less earwormy, and didn’t get a lot of mainstream radio airplay.
I finally have some great-nephews and great-nieces. They were having a ‘dance party’ at a family gathering recently. I had forgotten that this one used to get stuck in my head for days and days. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDx9zqDpSik Baby Beluga in the deep blue sea…
The first two dozen stanzas O Fortuna (Carmina Burana), Lady Marmalade and Mairzy Doats . Hopefully they will battle it out in my brain throughout the day and all three give up.
I just heard a song called “Uma Thurman” that samples the Munsters theme and the guy singing sounds like Ricky Martin. Don’t want to like the Munsters theme, but of course they sample the best parts…
My friends are ready to kill me. I gave a CD of “We Sing Silly Songs” to their son on Valentine Day. They can’t get “Do your ears hang low” out of their heads.
