I dunno, momofthreeboys, I’d find it awfully hard to be giggling tonight. No matter what the media miscalculated, no matter who wins, there seems very little that is amusing anymore about this election. We don’t deserve either of these losers.
D is terrified. I don’t know what to say to her.
MODERATOR’S NOTE: I know it’s hard, but please, no political comments.
From looking at my Facebook feed, I’m very thankful for CC’s “no politics” rule.
I’m glad I don’t go on Facebook, then!
On the West Coast here so our polls are just closing. My D drove all the way from college to vote with Mom. She had an absentee ballot but she wanted to vote live. We had 4 pages of ballot because there’s a million things they always throw out to voters from legalizing marijuana to big hotel tax for Chargers stadium. Higher than normal turnout at our local polling place.
I worked over 16 hours yesterday as a poll inspector. My district’s turnout was over 70% but there were no problems and it didn’t slow down until 8 pm. One local race came out very close with one candidate ahead by only two votes, and absentee ballots will still have to be counted.
I noticed only two voters who seemed upset at having to wait for ten minutes to cast their ballots. But there were several people in wheelchairs who relished the opportunity to come out and vote.
I pulled an all-nighter. Can’t believe it. Stayed up talking/texting with the kiddos and/or H. Wow!!!
@SouthFloridaMom9 Us too. H had to go to work at 5a so I just stayed up and made breakfast.
My only wish now is to be blessed with a forgetting memory and move on, of the election and its aftermath, and try to remember that whatever happens it likely won’t change my own life all that much, and to have optimism for the future, as hard as that can be at times.
One thing we can all get together on… the campaign ads are over!
Facebook is a real mixed bag of reactions for sure!
At least I have a heads up on a few political views that I wasn’t aware of before. It’ll probably save me a couple awkward moments since now I have more reason than ever (even before the election ironically) to keep my political views firmly tucked inside and only make positive comments.
Side note: And I actually saw another political ad AFTER the fact! (eye roll)
@musicprnt, my sentiments exactly.
" try to remember that whatever happens it likely won’t change my own life all that much"
This is true for some Americans but not true for all of us as Americans.
I’m sad for our kids and the world that they had to witness the mudslinging and name calling this campaign season. It reached a new low this year. We will all move forward–maybe saddened and stunned but still moving.
I did not not “like” or comment on political FB posts. Until today. Wonder how many will unfriend me
Worked the polls on election day to see what it’s like and to observe a bit of history in action. No early voting in my areas so lines got long. Mostly swamped in the morning/noon with another surge of voters between 5-7.
Most voters were very patient considering the circumstances, especially in the morning/noon though a few were understandably cranky because they needed to get to work. Heard some angry grumbling from a few cranky voters at my table and more at other tables, especially one where there was a pileup due to some carelessness.
I was nearly pulled from my assigned table by the site coordinator to staff the table with the pileup, but my chairperson insisted I be kept because we worked so well as a team and got the lines moving relatively smoothly and she didn’t want to risk that careless pollworker replacing me.
Didn’t finish wrapping up until 10:45 pm.
I am actually surprised at how I have not been defriended on FB despite the fact I don’t hesitate to respond to political posts when I feel the need or to otherwise hide my political views.
FB friends span the political spectrum ranging from those with radical Marxist/Maoist views on the left to radical right wing views of the Tea Party/libertarian-right variety…including a retired Republican state politician*.
- Older HS alum (graduated in the early '50s) whom I met and befriended IRL at a HS alumni gathering several years back.
@cobrat Thanks for your work yesterday. I had a few people in front of me and was in and out in less than 20 minutes. My poll people were great. Smooth. Efficient. My parents were poll people back in their days. I know it is hard work. Thank you again.
“I am actually surprised at how I have not been defriended on FB”
Thank goodness for the Unfollow option.
Thank you to all the CC posters who were involved on election day and throughout the election process regardless of your own personal leanings. An engaged and politically active population benefits democracy. Despite record voter turnout, my town handled election day smoothly and efficiently.
It was an honor to be a part of history. My parents were poll workers a decade ago and I got to work a few elections with them in the same polling site/different tables at times.
One bonus aspect of doing so was to have a chance at meeting many older neighbors with fascinating accounts of living through major historical events including the Great Depression, WWII, 'etc.
Unfortunately, most of them retired from working the polls after the introduction of the computerized voting scanning machines/scannable ballots.
Nowadays, it seems most people working the polls are much younger so I’m closer to being average/on the older side whereas a decade ago, I’d be among the youngest/the youngest poll worker in my voting site even if I was 10-20 years older than I am now.
Funny part is I enjoy reading political posts, especially those I disagree with or that are of the conspiracy theory variety.
One example is a FB friend who happens to work for a right-wing conspiracy theory website purporting to be a news site. Another is a FB friend who puts up heavily spun news stories from an unhinged radical Marxist/Maoist website. Gives a fascinating insight into the wide diversity of opinions and how they arrive at them.
No need for me to unfriend anyone as we are all on the same page.
