Advertising is now increasingly deceptive - Stefansson

I firmly agree with Stefanssons statement that advertising has now become deceptive .In the current economic situation, were the consumer is dealing with price rise and the manufacturers are facing stiff competition, advertising has turned deceptive. Although there laws against false advertising; companies tend to find a loophole. There have been various incidences in the recent past to justify that most advertising is now deceptive.

In a recent case, Apple computers had a lawsuit filed against them for false advertising. The incident revolved around an iPhone ad where it was portrayed as the mobile phone with the best internet experience. This was not true as the iPhone did not support popular flash based sites such as youtube or Gmail. Consumers were enraged when they found out they had paid heavy money on a phone on which they couldn’t access their mail or watch videos.

Another common example is the use the word ‘unlimited’. We see phrases such as unlimited internet, unlimited text messages getting used in adverts. Everyone will notice the enlarged word unlimited , but only a few notice the asterisk next to it redirecting you to the small print where phrases such as ‘subject to fair usage policy’ are used .The truth is that no service is unlimited and there have been cases where the customers have been charged for going over the ‘unlimited limit’. As ridiculous as this may sound, this scenario is getting increasingly common in areas such as mobile internet, where the service Is ‘unlimited ’on expensive contracts

A personal experience of mine also reaffirms Stefanssons’ assertion. When I was walking through my local shopping center, the words sale kept popping up in just about every electronic store I passed. Certain stores were offering discounts of 70%; or so it seemed. I had clearly seen the enlarged, bold and colorful number 70, but not seen the comparatively miniscule phrase ‘up to’ next to it. The store had only a few, if any products that were reduced 70% with a majority having only 20% reduction. This left me feeling disgusted and tricked.

Through my personal experience and various current examples I strongly believe that advertising has now largely become false and deceptive ; Whether it is with adverts on television or banners in stores .
