DO you know the admit rate for Industrial Technology and Packaging?
The Target projections for ITP were 130 applicants for 45 spots. Since SLO does not list their yield by major and not all admitted students will enroll, you can project an acceptance rate probably >50%.
Thank you
Anyone have any stats for admissions on this major?
Here are the stats for the College of Business where the ITP major resides:
SLO GPA | 4.11 – 4.25 |
---|---|
Number Applied | 8,345 |
Percent Accepted | 26.7% |
@acherg : I found one admit on the 2026 Discussion thread that posted stats:
UW 3.9, OOS, very heavy on EC’s, leadership & community service.
Found no one posting for ITP on the 2025 or 2024 discussion thread.
Can you please tell me how to calculate SLO GPA?
Use the CSU GPA calculator that I have linked and add in the 9th-11th grades for the a-g courses taken. Add 1 Honors point for each semester of a CSU approved Honors course/AP/IB or DE/CC a-g courses that was taken 10th-11th grades. Maximum Honors points is 8 semesters.
Example: 25 A’s and 5 B’s with 2 AP classes in 10th and 2 AP classes in 11th (total 8 semesters) = 4.1
Very interested in this major. My parents took me on a visit last year and I was able to see the business building for OCOB. Im looking at picking my senior year classes right now and am wondering if it makes a difference on AP STATS vs. Pre Calc for this program. I am also considering taking both so I meet the 5 years of math rec but am also looking at two English classes for the same reason so that may make doing both difficult. Anyone have any insight on this? This is my first post. I was trying for a Military Service Academy and building my classes around that for the past five years and with a shift toward UC’s and CSUs there are a few differences to consider. Thanks in advance. I have been watching the forum for a few years but didn’t really have anything to contribute until now because college seemed so far off. now it seems as I start second semester of Junior year things are starting to come pretty fast.
I’m not an expert at all, but I was helping my friend’s daughter pick a major at Cal Poly and she was originally interested in this one so I have researched it a bit. I would think that the Pre Calc class would be beneficial because if you look at the flow chart for this major, you’ll take Calculus your first quarter.
You will also take Statistics during your Freshman year in that major, so your AP Statistics class/test could give your credit for that class.
Also, according to the very old MCA calculator, the 5th year of math gave more bonus points then the 5th year of English. But, I have no idea if they use the MCA calculations anymore.
Thank you. I saw the old breakdown for the MCA and saw the huge discrepancy between the 5th year of math and the 5th year of English, but that both were very beneficial. I decided to call the admissions at lunch after they opened at 12 and they told me that both are important, same with English and helped me figure out some options. They were super helpful. On this site I also saw there is a UC calculator that Gumbymom posted so I used that and it was slightly different than what I had figured on my own but I feel good about my grades for 9-11 with the 8 semester cap of Honors/AP and 4 of those max for 10th grade. @Gumbymom Gumbymom on another post in a UCSB you shared some counseling advice about the unweighted UC GPA and the Uncapped UC GPA being used by the UCs. Is there a thought that this also applies to SLO, understanding the difference between 9-11 and 10-11 between the schools.
Also, thanks for posting the flow chart, I havent seen that before. I saw a list of classes and talked to the department head there who shared some information with me about the program and that it might be a great fit for an ROTC candidate as well because of the logistics side with the military and all of their needs.
For Freshman selection criteria, SLO lists the following about the GPA calculation:
GPA: For the purposes of your application, we’ll consider your 9th-11th grade weighted GPA. That number is calculated from college-prep coursework as designated on your application. Weight is granted for courses designated as “honors,” “college-level,” “advanced placement” or “international baccalaureate” for up to eight semesters.
If they calculate and use the Unweighted and Weighted Uncapped GPA, I cannot say. Since the GPA information posted correlates with the GPA posted in their Freshman profiles which is the SLO GPA 9-11th with the 8 semester cap. They do review all grades and courses to determine HS rigor beyond the 8 semesters used in the calculation.
This would be a question for admissions.
That’s great that you called the admissions office. They can be super helpful. And this sounds like a very interesting major.
My CP student is an ITP major 2nd year (junior status). They took 6 years math and ended up having 8 years English (took both regular grade English classes and Journalism all 4 years). 4 years FL as well. As for which math class, they took all the way thru Calc in high school and did Stats at the CC. By doing stats at CC they do not have to take it at CP. They tested out of precalc at CP and just had to Bus Calc (which by the way is not offered in the Fall quarter, only Winter and Spring). IF you take precalc in high school you will have to take precalc at CP again before taking calc but if you take calc in high school you can test out of precalc to just go straight to bus calc at CP. Many students who are not strong math students need to repeat precalc at CP and some even need to repeat Calc as it is not easy either.
How to take the In-Person MAPE | Mathematics Department says that students can place into calculus 1 (regular, for biology, or for business) with a high enough math placement exam score.
Yes there are different ways to place in math. My kid (current SLO freshman) places into Calc 1 with their CAASPP score.
we are sittin g at the table now trying to decide on his final elective class for senior year. His other elective is Student Govt since he will be class president. He will be taking pre-calc and has already taken Bio, Honors Chem and Physics. We are torn between AP stats and Environmental science. The AP stats would give him 5 years of math and the Environmental science class would give him 4 years of science. Any recommendations on which is better for the specific ITP major. I could see how they would both be useful. Thanks, his request sheet is due tomorrow and I thought we were set but after attending open house last week he is lesning toward the science route. Dont want to hold him back from that class but also dont want it to come at the expense of the extra math class. Might consider a summer option for stats at CC but not sure on that yet
AP Stats with an exam score of 4 or 5 will give him Credit at SLO for Stats 217 or 218 which are a required course for the ITP major. AP Environmental Science will only give credit for some elective units.
AP Stats would be the better choice but I always recommend that students take AP classes which interest them the most.
Thanks,
That makes sense. The environmental science offered is not AP level. From an admissions only standpoint, i wasnt sure if 4 years of science outweighed 5 years of math, or if that is even a factor. From a standpoint of not having to take the class later if I pass AP Stats with a 4-5 that would be cool but isnt my primary goal. I want to first make sure I can get admitted.
