Evaluation of Indian school marks for MIT

I must say, the list IS pretty impressive!

No, I haven’t disappeared.

LMC? I dunno, keep getting emails from them haven’t actually been to one of their meetings. But fyi there are SO MANY music groups on campus!

I dunno anything about astro except that plain ole physics can get you till the ocsc at least  for chem, no 2 people agree on anything, but I personally liked sykes for orgo.

Irodov starts with easier problems and then builds up. For whoever was asking, I ditched hcv after fricition, dabbled with resnick’s questions for short answer, and read bits of feynman for fun. But my prep was essentially irodov. I <3 that book, each new problem teaches you sth so you don’t really need to study concepts from a textbook. But ofc the teachers you have also make a Huge difference!

Anything else I forgot to reply to?

@Tippu - its not babugiri, its a holistic consideration of each applicants strengths, evaluating their skills and achievements in the context of their individual background and circumstances, with special attention to how they overcame the challenging situation that made committee review of their resume necessary in the first place :P

haha u forgot to answer my textbook question?

there seems to so many different versions of the same thing. which one is the best?

how good is MCKV Institute of Engineering?

esconie, I feel so much better now. I was expecting an outright rejection. :)

@jbubbles - where r u from??? MCKV engg. is just 10 minutes away from my home…

i m not particularly from kolkata… its kolkata-howrah

this is a random question… how this question came to ur mind

haha i take online tutoring from this indian guy who went there! he helps me with pre-calc.
hes extremely nice

@jbubbles - In West Bengal, there are many private engineering colleges. MCKV is one of the reputed ones. Yeah, it’s not the no.1 though.

@esconie - You didn’t answered the research question. Were you involved in any sort of research and was that research published?

Would you mind to tell all of us what was their in your application (leaving the Olympiads and SAT scores behind)?

btw, what sort of name is this “esconie”?
Is this related to ISKCON, the Lord Krishna Organisation in any way?

She topped the city in ICSE…

@esconie: Same que as harisheena’s , what else was in your application ? And do tell briefly abt the interview ( questions asked nd stuff )

@harisheena:

Don’t mind what an irrelevant question to ask ( your last que )

btw, what sort of name is “harisheena”?
Is this related to" haseena " ?

Actually I didn’t, the all india topper was from thane remember?

Research - never done anything remotely approaching it. But u can always start after coming here!

Jbubbles - different versions of what? And sorry, what was ur txtbook qs again?

What else was on my app? Random ecs, nthn spectacular. Like studebt council, some programming, learning french. And all the essays ofc

Interview was a random cnversation. We spoke abt saccharin, econ expts, wanting to try everything, culture shock, my experiences, peoples perceptions of me, cultural connotations of language, asterix, phonetic patterns, altruism and competition, life goals, the best way to teach sth, hacks, intellectual highs, cant. Even reember what else! It was fun  my interviewer first made me think mit would be aweeeesome for me :-)

Tippu - of course not. Its never an outright rejection. Usually more like you’re such an amazing applicant, we’d love to have you, we know you’d make a valuable addition to our club, buuuuuut we simply don’t have the space. Anyway. Submit ur resume, and we promise to give ur application serious though, because we respect the eeffort you took to prepare it ;-)

Best way to teach what?

@compscifan - my user id question was not for the sake of admission… it was just a simple curiosity… i asked that question to TippuSultan also…
if you put effort to move some posts up, you will get the answer whether harisheena is haseena or not… (haseena!!! i love haseenas though… mmmuuuah … love them  )

@esconie: Thanks for the info

@esconie Thanks. Learning from Irodov itself…wow. In class XI, I could barely solve anything from Irodov. Did you solve all of Irodov’s problems? And did you ever need any help/looking at solutions? Or just simply cruise through them? And you mentioned programming…did you win some huge Java competitions as well? Can you elaborate on your programming EC a little bit?

Just out of curiosity. 9 people from India got through to Princeton last year, right? How many applied?
And do you guys believe that there will be a MAJOR increase in the number of applicants, at least from India this year? Out of my batch of 150 kids in my school, about 50 are applying to US colleges (Mostly ivies and other big names). Last year this number was 5. So, a 900% jump in my school alone. Wow.

Major increase? I don’t think so. Marginal increase? Yes.

Giving the SAT doesn’t count towards applying. Usually everyone gives the SAT, no one applies :)

Congrats Esconie ji for that Olympiad medalX2(s) , but u didnt show off ur achievement in App right(IPHO) ? it was only lingi oly silv medal , but what abt the ones who got Olympiad in July after 12th ? can they apply in the coming january( for MIT, Princeton…) .do u know anything abt age requirements? Olympiads are really helpful right ? and did u submit any certificates to the uni;s while appliyn? . Please Reply
