Facebook update crap

I don’t have a Twitter account but I have friends who said theirs were not working.

:joy:

My D does social media for several advocacy groups connected to her work, and she had the same terror! I came over to babysit in the midst and was ranting about the whole FB snafu, and she was so thankful to find out it wasn’t her!

I had a similar experience. I thought that I might lose my account. Something similar happened to a friend a few years ago, and she says she was unable to recover her account. I don’t post much, but I do use it to follow some cherished relatives, so I was getting a little flustered when I couldn’t get my new password to work.

So coincidental. I did the FB update right before this issue…I guess. When the update was completed, I went to open FB…and got the password needed thing. I thought…WTH, they have never needed a password before when they did an application update. I didn’t realize it wasn’t an update issue!

In the past, when Facebook was down, I would get into my account but the feed was empty. This time I got the log in screen, and it told me I used the wrong password. That made me worry.

I think anytime something like this happens it’s always a good idea to change your password once you’re able to. Two factor authentication is also a great idea if you’re not already doing that.

Like many I also thought my account was hacked (especially since we had fraud on one our credit cards last week). I immediately started changing passwords on all my accounts.

I texted the mod/friend of one of the FB pages that I am active saying I think I was hacked…so look out for weird things on our page. Then she said she was also hacked and we figured out it wasn’t us.

Yeah I actually got an email about a new login from my account, naming a town in NJ but not near me. That’s when I was absolutely sure I’d been hacked. I called my sister in a total panic (I too have known people who lost control of their FB permanently) and asked her to check mine. When she couldn’t get on, I then realized to check on Twitter, and it was plain it wasn’t me, but it was also plain that a many thousands of people had had the same panic.

I think the warning of new login was me trying to get on through Firefox on my phone (I usually use the app, but of course that wasn’t working) and FB isn’t very accurate with where logins come from.

I was already dealing with a power outage in my neighborhood that morning, so my nerves were stretched thin to start with. It actually was a good lesson to learn that two things like that can happen at the same time, and be totally unconnected, even as my brain was saying that they certainly must be.
