FALL 2014 Guaranteed/ Conditional Transfers

@Shap95 That’s funny 'cause I expected my friends to react negatively, so I only told my closest friends. Even then, the response was… tepid at best. Not that I wanted fanfare or anything, they started pulling up rankings that placed my current school above Cornell, asked my why I would want to leave, and lectured me on the merits of our school. One was completely silent and I wanted to run away. As a coverup I lied to them that I might stay even if I “make it.” I’m putting off telling anyone I’m leaving for good until I’ve been officially accepted.

@concerto95 I know they’ve started looking through the TO applications because I received a personal email saying so (if ya want proof feel free to pm me or smtn). But who knows when decisions will actually be sent out.

Mid-April’s not that bad. Dunno about you guys, but I’m only 12% as nervous as this time last year.

Take it easy, yah?

Oh yeah, and petition to correct the title of this thread. Contract colleges get enough crap already, contract college + transfer? Forgive me if I’m being too blunt, some people are going to seriously question whether we belong there.

You can’t change the title I tried lol I am 100% embarrassed

EDIT: I emailed the college confidential admin to request that they edit the typo.

@haswelli07 when did you receive the transfer admission? Are you an International student? and what’s your GPA? Thanks a lot~

Did people find professors accommodating giving mid-term reports on a form used to transfer to another university ? Seems like an uncomfortable position to be put into.

Also, the comments about whether you belong there, may be true about being questioned, but who cares ? If you get the grades, you belong, if you can not compete, you did not. Does not matter if you got in as a freshman or as a soph. I was a bit concerned that the writing seminar at Cornell is more rigorous than most colleges, and a transfer may not be prepared for what is to come !

My big concern for my S is he is considering NOT taking what might have been his next choice after ILR, due to having an honors college involved, with many perks. He feels guilty taking such an offer when planning to leave a year later, and instead considering a lesser choice school. I think that’s very risky. Honorable maybe, but I would rather have 2 good choices, stay or go.
Having to go to professors when you are one of their small contingent of honors students,
especially in honors classes, to tell them you are considering transferring seems to make
for a very tense wait for an answer from Cornell !

@changyu92liu I received the Transfer Option in June 2013, I have a 4.0 college GPA, and I’m not a international student.

@blevine my professors were really understanding. They wished me luck and said I would be missed. I would encourage your S to go to his second choice with the honors college, just in case he decides in the end he doesn’t want to transfer to Cornell. You don’t have to tell the professors anything until second semester (when you are getting the midterm report filled out). I wouldn’t pass up a great opportunity like that just because he thinks he may transfer.

@blevine I’m not a GT but just a regular transfer applicant but I knew before going to college that I was going to try to transfer. I chose to attend my best option (well financially and academically) which included being a part of the honors program and an honors cohort. I would advise your son not to elimate his second choice simply due to the honors program. Asking for recommendations and getting professors to sign the midterm report isn’t really a big deal. The professors aren’t (or at least shouldn’t be) going to be offended if he is going to accept the GT, they understand he has to do what is going to be best for him. They might be a little sad to see a good student like him go, but they will be supportive.

@blevine well it may be sticks and stones for other people sure, but I’m pretty self-conscious about those things. Due in large part to the strong Greek system and most students’ relatively high socioeconomic standing, these and many very “right-wing” comments are made online and probably on campus. There’s a pretty popular student-run message board for Cornell students that’s brimming with comments like that that make me really worried about starting over at Cornell.

I went into my current school as an honors student. The Honors programs were held by our college’s Provost who is a Harvard graduate (my point being that your son’s profs won’t all have graduated from the school they’re teaching at and won’t necessarily discourage him from leaving). He did seem disappointed that I may be leaving and tried to convince me not to leave, but there was no tension at all. Also, it’s not like your son has to be actively discussing his TO with his profs and friends since day one. I didn’t tell anyone at ALL until quite late into the school year. In fact, the GPA and course requirements notwithstanding, I had a very enjoyable first year so far, knowing I can “run away” and look forward to new experiences in the future.

On the mid-term report - I’d just ask for grades from the registrar (an unofficial or official mid-term transcript if the school has those), but failing that, I’m pretty sure the profs have hundreds of other students and research to worry about that they won’t give your son a hard time for report.

@findmefazo I know many transfers to Cornell in the contract schools, and none of them have had any issues. I don’t know where you are getting your information/what forum you are looking at, but we are just as good as anyone else. I’m sorry that you’re not feeling adequate, but everyone on this GT thread has earned their spot and are just as intelligent and competent as the regular admits and the non contract school students.

The TO offer letter from ILR specifically said they give this to a very limited number of candidates.
I do not see transfer student as any negative indicator of success. And the contract college thing is ridiculous.
If you want to be a vet, study business in undergrad, and other niche areas, these are the schools
one would go. They do have different standards. You need better math scores/grades to get into
engineering than other schools, but that’s true at any university. You can also get by on lower reading/writing
scores vs math, in many engineering and business schools. I am sure there are those in A&S would
would have been rejected by engineering !

I have seen the horrible discussions on metaezra and yes there are some mean people who need to put down
others, but that is part of life, can happen anywhere. I am sure there are many more nice people, and transfers
will form a strong bond themselves anyway (and quickly branch out).
I know some Cornell grads, some sweet, some not…like everywhere.

I agree with @blevine. Wherever you go, there are going to be people that will always feel the need to put others down. Cornell is Cornell. When you graduate you will have Cornell written on your degree, not “contract school.” Honestly if you think of the contract schools being “lesser” than the other schools, you have a serious issue. There is no real difference besides where your major is located.

Hey is everyone able to log in and sign up for meal plans? I am not able to apply for housing yet but I can sign up for a meal plan … Could this be a sign ?

@goodluck13 I can sign up for a meal plan but not housing as well. I’m not sure if this is a sign though, since I’m not expecting to get in with the GT because my school did not allow me to take bio, one of the GT required classes. i wrote them a letter explaining the circumstance that was out of my control, so maybe they understood?

@goodluck13: I can log in and select meal plans too. It says I am eligible for 1st year meal plans. Do you think this is a sign? They verify your app ID and tell you the plans you qualify for!!! What do you guys think???

Is there a link for meal plan sign up?

No link for meal plan…just go to Cornell dinning and clock on apply for meal plan and see what happens.

I went into it, selected the “Golden Bear” plan, got to the send receipt/confirmation to email page. But stopped their. Is that what you did?

I can also apply for a meal plan, but I will wait to I know officially.

As for everyone else, I told my friends and roommate in the beginning of the year. I couldn’t keep that secret for very long. Cornell’s been my dream for 8 years.

I have a Cornell pennant hanging above my bed at school.

@blevine I admire your nonchalance. I wish I were that way too, but I’m just simply not. I’m clearly an outlier in the amount of anxiety I feel about transferring to Cornell.
