FALL 2014 Guaranteed/ Conditional Transfers

@findmefazo you’re not an outlier in the anxiety. I am sure we are all feeling nervous about the transition. I just wouldn’t be so concerned about being deemed “stupid” for being a transfer to the contract schools. If people judge you based on that, then you shouldn’t want to be friends with them anyway. In a school of 14,000 people there will be some rude people, but there will also be some amazingly nice and friendly people who do not presumptuously judge you based on the fact you are a transfer/contract school student. I really think this not where to place the anxiety, as most people could care less that you are a transfer. A Cornellian is a Cornellian.

Plus, we’ve all got each other and I’m sure that we will meet face to face at some point during a transfer event or whatnot (not in a creepy was because I’m not about that life). There are tons of other transfer students transferring next year and who have already made the transition that will be there for us and will help. Yes there are going to be pretentious people who think they are better than us, but that’s okay, that happens everywhere. Ultimately, if this is what we want we should go for it. The toughest program to get into (AEM) in in a contract college. Cornell is an Ivy and regardless of what happens Cornell truly wants us. Had we not been remotely fit for this school they would have never given us this option.

Last year I was wait listed originally. I was heartbroken and thought I was a pity wait-list because I am a legacy. I then received a transfer option and now I understand that I had a chance, I was in the running–we all are.

We should be proud of where we have come from, how much we have grown, and our accomplishments. It is not easy to make the choice to transfer, to uproot your life and leave your new friends behind. It takes a strong person to go to a school for a year knowing that the next year they may be elsewhere. For us, the college process didn’t end last year, it is still going on.

I am so grateful for this forum (I know it’s cheesy) because I have been hard pressed to find information about the TO out there. You all have helped me understand and deal with this situation. I wish everyone the best of luck, and I sincerely hope to meet some of you next year. Good luck!

Do you guys notice anything different about the title?

@Goodluck13 You got it corrected! ^^

For those of you worried about “second class citizen” status for being in a contract college, I had those same thoughts when I was choosing between Cornell A&LS and Penn over 30 years ago. I had a long talk with a family friend who was then a senior in A&LS, and he helped allay my concerns. Attending Cornell is a decision I have never regretted.

In my experience, there was very little in the way of social or educational stratification among students in the various colleges. Certainly there was joking regarding the stereotypes – socially-inept engineers, hayseed aggies, social-climbing hotelies, etc., but I never found it to be mean-spirited (well, Ann Coulter would have meant it, but fortunately I never knew her while in Ithaca). In any event, I was able to interact daily with students from all the colleges, whether in class, in the dorm and then my fraternity, on the staff of the Daily Sun, and other extracurricular activities.

Indeed, I found the diversity of backgrounds and interests somewhat unique to Cornell among the Ivies and other “upper tier” schools. Ironically, I ended up at professional school at Penn, and observed that the undergraduates there seemed far more homogenous than at Cornell.

While it’s surely been awhile since I graduated, I’ve stayed pretty in-tune with Cornell over the years, and I don’t believe the atmosphere has changed appreciably. I have a particular interest in this thread, since my daughter is a GT and is looking forward to accepting the offer and heading to Ithaca next fall. We were in Ithaca recently, and the vibe seemed little different than I remembered (although Collegetown is a little too “gentrified” for my taste).

Best of luck to everyone. I can appreciate that the thought of transferring can be daunting, but Cornell appears to have an excellent transfer infrastructure that should help ease the transition.

^^^ that’s my dad :)

@findmefazo - I was offered GT to the Biology & Society major at CALS (class of 2018). I plan on attending UCLA this fall as a Biology major and transferring to Cornell in 2015. I see that you have the same major. Could you please let me know what required courses did you take during your first year? I just want to make sure I take the right courses at UCLA. Thanks!

@happy2014 refer to this page: http://cals.cornell.edu/admissions/apply/transfer/requirements/</a>

Additionally refer to this page: <a href=“Course Descriptions - Cornell University - Acalog ACMS™”>Course Descriptions - Cornell University - Acalog ACMS™;

You can check the course descriptions for the courses Cornell wants you to take and compare it the course descriptions at your University, which will help in choosing the appropriate classes for your fall and spring semester.

hey guys…AEM overhere. Just wondering if any of you guys got your replies yet. I read somewhere that it usually comes out from mid April-late May. I REALLY don’t want to play 300 dollars to my current college to make a rooming reservation :frowning: i guess i could ask for an extension but the payment is due April 24th and if decisions come much later, say bye to 300 dollars. Any one else in a similar scenario? I’m scared somethings going to go wrong with the transfer option and then I’ll be without a room in my current college Lol :-/

@ballislife123‌ no, none of us have gotten replies yet. I would call AEM and explain your situation to them, they may be able to give you your decision over the phone. That’s what I did with ILR and they let me know they sent out replies last week, so I am just waiting for the letter to come to my house!

Yea ok that might be what I have to do. I just don’t want to be that person that hounds them for a reply…

@ballislife123‌ I think they will understand. We are GTs so at this point we basically know if we are in or not as long as we have met the requirements. I think they get the fact that we are planning on going to Cornell next year and need a definite decision so we do not have to waste deposit money at our current institutions.

@Shap95 Alright! Thanks for the help and good luck to you and the rest of the people on this forum.

Hey does anyone know if they changed the transfer requirement classes we needed to take 0_0 It says we need stats and now we must take two writing courses instead of like one public speaking class and writing course. And macro is optional? This only applies to AEM.

@Shap95 What!? How come you didn’t tell us sooner? They sent out letters last week? So shouldn’t we get decisions in the next few days or so?

@ballislife123‌ Yeah, the requirements for my major changed too, but I think it’s for next year’s students. They actually got rid of some requirements.

@findmefazo this is just for ILR. I called about two weeks ago on a Thursday, and they said they would be sending out letters the upcoming week. I thought ILRers would be getting letters sometime this past week, but they haven’t come yet, so I am assuming they will be coming beginning this week.

Anyone hear anything about when CALS may be sending decisions?

@concerto95 On the applicant self service page it says “transfer applicants start receiving their replies mid April” .I’m going to assume that thats the earliest we’ll get them.

Has anyone been able to log into the housing portal?
