Fall of 2020 UMD Transfer Students

Hello,

After considering certain factors, I am thinking about possibly unsubmitting my transfer application to the business school for Fall 2020 since I can only apply once to the business school. I am planning on re applying for Spring 2021, because I will have enough credits by then and my GPA will be much higher for consideration. Does anyone know if this is a wise decision that I am proceeding with and if it is the same level of difficulty to transfer in the middle of the year in comparison to coming in Fall?

Hello @tejasb21 this is honestly tricky. My advise for you would be to contact admission to ask if you can change your chosen major and then reapply as an internal transfer once you are admitted to the campus. You have pretty good stats and you have a good chance of getting in. I wouldn’t advise for you to cancel your application but rather just switch your major. Did you apply to the Shady Grove campus as well? I am an LEP major and I already got accepted into my program at Shady Grove.

So basically after this year, I will have a 3.6 but, I havent finished my gateway classes yet to get an admission into the umd business school so my plan is to stay at my current university for half a semester and finish up the required classes, and then switch. I only applied to UMD College Park for Finance/Information Systems.

@umdfall2020 Hi! So basically if you submit a on campus housing agreement by may 1st then you are guaranteed a on campus spot. However, I am transferring in as a junior and I know that most upperclassmen live off campus in the apartments such as university view, the varsity, landmark etc.

I am hesitant on signing a lease with a off campus apartment because what if the school closure extends till fall and I never get a chance to move in. I would not get my money back and would still have to pay rent because a lease is binding and it is also not owned by UMD.

@umdfall2020 also I am in state. I have heard great things about the mazza grand marc but again, I dont want to sign a lease because what if UMD doesn’t open in the fall!!

@RBevan Did you ever get a dm back?? and yes you are right, all we can do is hope. I just can’t wait any longer! I did email them a while back asking if they will be delayed but they said no. You’d think that decisions being made virtually would come out earlier than how they normally make decisions.

@umdtransfer Regarding accommodation, those are one of my fears too! But schools may reopen by the fall semester and I don’t want a situation where I wouldn’t have a place to live. I also never knew Upper Class men are guaranteed a spot on campus, I’ll look more into that. I am also transferring as a Junior!

@umdtransfer No, I never got a dm back! ?
I am worried about getting housing too. I believe I would also be transferring in as a junior and I would prefer to live on campus if possible but I know it’s unlikely for upperclassmen to get on-campus housing

But also UMD is not my first choice so I might not end up going there depending on where I get in

Ugh I’m so nervous about my decision. Does anyone know if it is easier for in state students to transfer in? I don’t go to school in Maryland, but my home is in Maryland. I’m worried about housing as well. From what I’ve heard certain apartments are affiliated with the university and will make some kind of agreement. I have friends living in Terrapin Row next year and they received an email saying they’d work out a deal for students

I don’t know for certain that it is easier for instate, but my best guess is that it is. I also wouldn’t sign a lease for next year if you do get in. You don’t want to be locked into a lease and not be attending school in person. Things are too uncertain right now.

It says on their website that they give preference to in-state students

Hey everyone, I applied before the March 1st deadline for transfer from a Maryland CC. The few months leading up to the deadline were very hectic for me and as a result, I was unable to secure a letter of recommendation. I think while GPA and other things are in the range they expect, does not having a letter of recommendation hurt my chances pretty bad?

@umdfall2020 I lied! Upperclassmen are not guaranteed housing. What I read was for first year students. Oh no!!

@marylandpride25 What kind of agreement did your friends from Terrapin Row get? Like regarding if schools don’t open up again in the fall?

@MtotheD Honestly I think you are fine, letter of recs were not required for transfer students but obviously it would have done more benefit than harm having one.

@umdtransfer I’m honestly not sure. All I know is that they had a lease there for next year and they got an email saying that arrangements would be made because they are affiliated with the university

I can’t take that waiting
I wish it would come out today

@RBevan me, too. Lots of plans depend on this outcome. It would be nice to know sooner rather than later. But, the good thing is that we will know before May.

@RBevan I can’t wait any longer either. I wonder if UMD is the only school that takes this long for transfer decisions. I heard back from Penn State and Towson University back in January. And I have to accept their offers by May 1st! So UMD needs to hurry up.
