February 8...and it's snowing....again.

Learn to howl? Can my kids be in their early 20’s? I had in mind, ya know, a lil different but that might be a good laugh. Guessing no drinks with umbrellas.

Just watching ABC Nightly News where they are talking about the Boston area - David Muir says, “these east coasters are tough but this is simply ridiculous”. Be safe people!

I thought this was pretty cute - comparing the snow height to Boston’s sports stars: http://m.mlb.com/cutfour/2015/02/09/108794172/boston-is-now-measuring-its-snowfall-totals-as-compared-to-david-ortizs-height

still sleeping with the window open- something is wrong here. went hiking with tshirt/shorts today. we need the snow - this may be a terribly dry and fire prone summer if this keeps up.

So, must admit, just spent a week in Palm Springs…and it was unseasonably warm there. Returned home to Northern CA and just gorgeous and warm here, too. Planning to go to the beach tomorrow. While it’s been just delightful, we are very wary of what the future brings in terms of water. The ski resorts at Tahoe are struggling…it’s 60 degrees there!!!

We SO wish there was a way all that excess snow on the east coast could be transported to the west. Or that we all could have just an “average” year…none of the extremes that the nation seems to be experiencing…

One silver lining for us is that this brutally cold weather, snow in the midwest may finally convince Goskid 1 to come home

Instead of oil pipelines crossing the continent, water pipelines?

Just outside Boston we got well over a foot of snow for a 4th storm in a row. At this point we’ve pretty much stopped measuring. We’re expecting another 3-5 inches on Tuesday, then this weekend there appears to be another storm rolling in. The meteorologist commented “It’s too early to call but this one looks relatively impressive.” The current temps are sub-zero with wind chills of -30 degrees. I used to love snow storms. Sigh…

I heard they have snow farms where they take some of the snow and dump; they are also using snow melters, but I’m not sure what they’re doing with the melted snow - it can’t be dumped into he harbor. What they really need are some Snow Dragons - machines that can melt 30 tons of snow an hour, while also filtering out pollutants and trash, then sending the water down a storm drain.

The snow farms in denser communities are full. Many coastal cities and towns, including Boston, have invoked the emergency clause of the no harbor dumping regulation and are now disposing of snow there. We do have some snow melters, and have gotten a few on loan from New York, but they can only make a tiny dent. Boston has temporarily turned some normally two way streets into one ways.

There were a bunch of roof collapses today and with the snow forecast for next weekend being a wetter mix I expect to see many more.

And here with wind chills at -20…that is not a misprint…now it’s frozen pipes. I have two friends who have had this issue in the last two days…awful.

This is sure taxing our heating systems!

When it is this cold out (-3 with a feels like -22 right now) I find I don’t need to up my heat at all. I actually keep it lower in the house then on damp/raw 40 degree days. I have it set at 64 now.

My oil delivery last week was at $2.84 a gallon and my company reduced my budget plan for the rest of the year by 25%. I don’t recall that ever happening before.

Just got back from my mother’s condo- frozen hot water pipes,
She has cold water ( which she dribbled last night )

A hot water installer said she has to hire a “concealed leak detecter”. Does anyone have experience with this?
He showed me pics of another hovnanian home, also on a slab, they had to tear through the slab, and fix the underground pipe??? Huh? Cost $2200 ( for repair itself)
My mom is freaked.

Anyone have experience with hot water frozen, and slab construction?

Streets around me are all posted for no parking. Car was parked right next to one in front of the condos next door. Ah well.

It’s a situation where one idiot or bad decision makes a road impassable. As in, many streets have no turn lane, just room for opposing traffic to fit through so if some person pulls into the old turn lane to turn there’s no way to get through. I saw some awkward backing up.

This is one of the rare occasions when the claiming of spaces makes sense: the streets in Boston are generally reduced to one travel lane, ideally in both directions so the entire parking area is a mass of snow. Carving out a space, which is what it takes, is an endeavor.

SouthJersey, maybe start a new thread for that question - you might get faster responses with a thread just for that topic - cause some people with the knowledge might not be looking at this thread - cause they are too tired of snow!

We’ve installed insulated pipe heaters for the last xx years ever since we got sick of using the hair dryer in inconvenient situations.

I’m just pleased to have made it back inside after walking the dog and almost getting hit by two different cars because our street is now so narrow…

Saw the original post and laughed as it is a Monday in Kansas, and we got a couple inches of snow.

Edit: This was unexpected for me and a couple friends as we were expecting nice weather

We prepaid our heating oil at $3.49 a gallon. No one has offered to give us a rebate.

Our house has a ton of windows, good well insulated ones…but windows. When it’s 22 below with the windchill, it’s just hard for the furnace to keep up.

We are leaving it at 67 24/7 during this cold, and really that helps. Once it cools down it takes a long while to heat all the thermal mass up again.

I’m looking forward to spring.

Southjerseychessmom, I think the plumbers here are overwhelmed since our homes, especially the ones built in the last 20 something years are lacking when it comes to proper insulation to protect us from these extremes….did you try McAllister in Somers Point ? Or Broadley’s in Marmora ? I’d love to tell you my plumber has a handle on it, but he is a low budget hack

Hey lje62 thanks so much. She has someone come out, but it need to talk to condo association in morning.
Abasket thanks for tip bout thread, I think I posted this in wrong thread, somewhere I read posts that people didn’t have hot water, just like mom. Now confused …not sure where that was.

I’m in Hawaii and my son went home from NY to Maryland for the weekend. I suspect he may be driving in the storm. Hopefully he beat the really bad weather.
