Finished Friday Night Lights, Now What?

Okay, so I am not a football fan. I’m also not a Texas fan. But some time about two weeks ago I started watching Friday Night Lights on streaming Netflix, and was totally hooked. I just finished season 5, and I’m bereft. No more Downton Abbey, either.

I need a new Netflix series. Or Hulu. (I’m all caught up on Glee and Grey’s Anatomy, my favorites.) Any suggestions? (I tried The Sopranos a couple of years ago and just couldn’t get into it.)

Mad men? Weeds? Those are two I hear are terrific…

If you want to continue on with the college theme…Greek was pretty cute.

I liked Everwood. Nothing equals Friday Night Lights, though.

Have you watched The Wire? I highly recommend it. It’s probably the best written show I’ve ever seen. There are 5 seasons worth, so that should keep you occupied for a while!

Breaking Bad

One of my all-time favorites

Oh, me too! I started Friday Night Lights about 6 weeks ago and finished last weekend. I am so sad to be finished!!!

Doc Marten is a fun show and is on Hulu. And I am enjoying Revenge thanks to another CCer.

Don’t look now, Consolation; but seems you are now a full-fledged high school football fan as well as a fan of Texas mystique! Another dedicated FNL fan here!! Also read the book, liked the series better and I usually prefer books over movies, etc.

No clue if it is on Netflix or Hulu but Parenthood is a great ensemble drama done by the creator of FNL. It centers around a big family who go through trial and tribulations of being a family. It has a lot of the same writing style (thank you Jason Katims) and is filmed in the same way.

It is extremely hard to find a show similar to FNL because there is nothing like it out there. I’ve been rewatching random episodes here and there (still can’t figure out how the first season didn’t win a crazy amount of awards) and I am just in awe of the show each and everytime. It had some plots I was not a fan of - Tyra and Landry and the murder and Julie sleeping with her TA - but it is a great show.

I think all of Arrested Development is on Netflix. Amazing comedy that went off the air too quickly.

Firefly! It’s a space-Western, created by Joss Whedon of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame. Great characters, kind of campy, but lots of big themes to think about. It was canceled after only one season so there are only 13 episodes. And then fan uproar led to a movie. (Also available on Netflix.) It’s not my usual thing, but wow–it is well written, and funny, and heartbreaking, and adventurous–I just loved it. It’s a great ensemble. Nathan Fillion, who is on Castle now, plays the captain.

It’s also what I watched when I finished FNL on netflix. It’s so completely different, comparisons are odious! But I know that bereft feeling when you reach the end…

We were lost when we finished FNL for the first time. (yeah, 6 months later we watched them all again. and then we bought the whole set.) There just isn’t anything as good on tv now. Parenthood is pretty good, but not quite.

Completely different type of series, but have you watched Gilmore Girls? My D used to watch it after school years ago, and then at some point she convinced us to rent them from the library and watch with her. We are almost as obsessed with that series as we are with FNL.

Have you watched 24? It was a good series. Also Prison Break.

Texas Forever.

Another FNL fan here; also love Doc Marten! Try it. Am working my way through The Wire, and it is good (but not as good as FNL).

Loved Firefly, but it won’t last you long.

Other suggestions:
Foyle’s War - understated detective drama set during WW2 Britain
Deep Space Nine - at times funny, at times serious space tale (Chekov from the original Star Trek is brilliant as a villain)
MASH - we watched the entire original series and were amazed at how well it had stood up.
Battlestar Gallacitica - kinda depressing, but always intriguing - there’s no black and white characters here - it’s all shades of gray, lots of parallels with current events.

Slings and Arrows (Canadian made series based on real life drama group and Shakespeare…)

AND

The Wire. I don’t think any series I have watched has ever beat this 5 series drama. I need to watch it again.

I loved Foyles War.
Also liked Studio 60 on the Sunset strip ( recommended if you like Aaron Sorkin).
Sherlock is a mini series set in present day. Sherlock is portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch( I just love that name), as on the Asbergery side.

An older series which I watched before House, was Jeeves & Wooster.

I liked the Wire but I felt the casting
/stories became uneven as the show went on-heresy I know.
Idris Alba is the lead in Luther, a Brit detective show. On the dark side for me. ( fun fact- he toured Japan in a production of Guys & Dolls when he was young)

I don’t like Breaking Bad, I watched a few episodes& I just wanted to slap him upside the head.

I started watching Awake, with Jason Issacs. I like it, but one or two things make me wonder if his reality is actually very different.

Also watch Doc Marten, but it has been a long time since a new episode has shown in US.:(

Thanks for all the great suggestions!

Series that I have already watched and loved include The Wire, Foyles War, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, The West Wing, Greek (one of those secret shames! ), MASH (first time round)

I watched a couple episodes of Breaking Bad and didn’t get into it, but my S is always urging me to give it a try, so I will. I started Mad Men last night, and find it hateful, but I am intrigued despite myself. I’ll have to check out Firefly and Doc Marten. And 24, which I’ve never seen.

One of my favorite series is BIG LOVE. The first season, HBO added some gratuitous sex, but the show really got away from exploring the sexuality of polygamy and delved more into politics in the home, community, government, and LDS church in subsequent seasons. The series is complete and all available.

LUTHER (BBC) is great too, but very gritty and frightening.

Another favorite is SIX FEET UNDER.

Reporting back, have watched all of Doc Martin and past seasons of Mad Men. Loved both. Currently catching up on the last couple of seasons of MI5, have added Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, and 24 to my instant Netflix queue.

BIL and I have been watching–rewatching for the third or fourth time, in my case–Ken Burns’ Civil War series. I don’t know how he managed to miss it, but he’s loving it. (Well, actually, I do know. H’s family, although they watch tons of TV, think that turning on PBS is a pinko commie intellectual thing that no real American would do. )

One word: SHERLOCK
