Funny step count story from yesterday.
I went into the office because I was teaching so had walk to/from subway. The 1st class I taught was 4 hours and I spent the time wandering around the front of the class room.
Post work I had the parents vs kids game for my 2nd graders.
When I went to play soccer at 8PM, I discovered that I was at 20K of steps for the day. We only got to play for 45 minutes because of storms but I got another 4K of steps
Supposed to be doing a 42 mile bike ride this morning, BUT…
We noticed my husband’s tire wasn’t doing well, so he took it to the bike shop yesterday afternoon. Several hours later, the tire was flat, and it was leaking air as I filled it. Husband took it to the shop this morning, at the time they opened. Unfortunately, the manager had to do a clinic and the other person wasn’t there yet. Probably he wasn’t there yet bc he didn’t anticipate the huge amount of traffic related to a big run (marathon, half marathon, etc.). It took my husband an hour for what should have been a 20 minute ordeal. His bike still isn’t ready, and the run isn’t over until noon (1.5 hours from now), so not sure we will make our ride today. The weather is really nice here today, so frustrating. Hopefully we can at least do a more local ride.
Thanks for listening
Saturday was my last day of coaching 3 games for the spring so lots of walking on the sideline. Toss in going the the MLS game and I got another few thousand steps in.
Maybe it’s just me, but I took a day off yesterday (Sunday) and my body actually feels worse than if I would have exercised. And last week was sorta kinda a deload week, post-Murph.
I did work very hard, just mostly HIIT’s and cardio, less on strength, since I knew today begins a new 16-week strength cycle.
I thought of you this morning, when H sent me a screenshot of his health app. Last week, he took the week off from the gym (not that he does any cardio) and was in class for 4 hours each day after the work. And yet, he averaged over 15,000 steps per week. One day was over 20K. How? Last Friday was (his very last!!!) Field Day and for the opening ceremonies, each grade does a dance… He practiced dancing all day and then had Field Day on Friday - the 20K+ day…
Good vibes for me… I go to visit older S/GF tomorrow-Wednesday. Or rather, I purposely signed up for a work training class near them. And of course today, my co-worker who sits in the cubbie next to me announces how sick he was all weekend and didn’t get out of bed, and I’ve listened to him snuffle/cough all day. ARGH! I swear if I get sick… We might have one fewer employee in here. (And for anyone who can’t tell, I am kidding!)
I’m still doing my same old same old. But since H has been in a training class every evening after work, I’ve had time to walk around the neighborhood and then do 30-45 min yoga every evening. And then I can eat whatever I want to eat without looking at H turn up his nose. I confess it’s been WONDERFUL! I only get 2 more weeks of this though, but I will enjoy every day…
It’s a secret until he completes it successfully and has a job that he likes. But, it’s something that’s WAY outside his comfort zone from a skill set point of view, so I am very proud of him for going through it. Once he gets comfortable with it, the environment and job I think will be great for him…
So more good vibes needed! He alternates between feeling good and what the blank am I doing? I can’t do this. But as the weeks go by, the doubts aren’t as bad…
Well I made it here and got the super suite in my hotel. I think they felt sorry for me in my sad employer vehicle. It’s a 13 year old Fusion with no bells and whistles, has been in more than one accident, and smells REALLY funky on the inside!
But I digress. I ran this morning. I almost didn’t, but so glad I did. It was a fabulous 6 miler. I saw more people out running today between 5-6am than I’ll see the rest of the year at home. I felt like a real runner and the best part was nobody passed me! At least on foot. Bikers don’t count.
Had a great time visiting the kids, but stayed up much later than normal. Had to get up early for the run and I was rushing hard to get here on time… to discover I had the time wrong and I was an hour early. Gak! And now I’m super sleepy… im afraid this will be a long day and a longer drive home tonight
Two bucket item list items this week…… some photo Show and Tell for my fitness friends….
We went to Steamboat Spring (a ski town with terrific bike paths too). My husband brought along his new-ish gravel ebike, which he has been riding A LOT, often 25+ miles on the back roads near home. And ta daa…. I tried a rental ebike for 2 hour ride together. There was a bit of a learning cure, especially since the frame style is so different from my beloved hybrid bike I’ve been riding for almost 40 years. But I’m glad I did it.
Wednesday night was my first of 4 beginner pickleball group lessons organized by the city rec center. Lots of fun with 8 other students - all ages, mostly women. These 6 delightful courts are less than 2 miles from home. The local pickleball organization raised $20K to help the city build 10 more courts (maybe tennis conversions, not sure) on the other side of town.
Below are some more photos from our 2night getaway. A casual creek side happy hour bar that’s our kind of vibe. Plus some shots of adventure water sports in the creek behind our downtown motel room that are definitely NOT on my bucket list.
Fun times. We own gravel bikes and really like them for trail rides. It may be worth getting an upgrade to your 40 YO bike if you and your husband will be riding together. I play pickleball 3-4 times a week. It’s good exercise and I have a nice group of people to play with regularly. My county also has a related association, and they “sponsor” play around the county multiple times almost every day. Your area might have something similar.
Yea, part of the reason to join the pickleball class was to have opportunity (if I like it) to play with others. Last night was fun, collaborative skill drills. There’s a good chance that I won’t like it as much when playing to score. I did notice very slight soreness of ankles and knees this morn. Nothing of concern, except for long term worries of injuries if I really start to play.
My daughter had her road bike stolen (from 2nd story balcony!), and she really likes her new gravel bike. My bike is great for what I do (ride it to the lake trail in summer for my running, sometimes ride around the lake if not a good day to run, occasional errand). I’m pretty slow, but since hubby prefers riding alone there is no temptation to get a new bike. On his “rest” days, he does not mind going my pace to the small town cyclist lunch place.
Went for a lovely 4 mile with D1, SIL and grandson yesterday. We’d planned for 3ish but the cutover trail was closed.
Friday I got my usual 2 miles to/from dinner.
This morning, we had a 4v4 pickup game so a ton of running. I had one disasterous sequence where I had an own goal, and a giveaway leading to goal. I also scored a few goals
I continue to do a variety of fitness “things” - largely HIIT workouts before work, lots of walking, occasional running, PLENTY of gardening/grass cutting this time of year. Since we now have a pool I’ve also been swimming several days a week - a really nice fitness “add on” especially in the evening after work. It’s no Olympic pool, but I am still wearing my Apple watch for the swim and it seems to be recording yards completed and it adds on a nice amount of “credit” for a managable 20 minute swim!
