Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

I still do my thing - pickleball and biking, with some walking, core strengthening and weights thrown in occasionally.
We are expanding our pickleball group, and it’s a little stressful. We’ve had such a cohesive group for a year or longer, with no stress, but it’s nice to have new players too.

Still doing my thing. But one of H’s gifts from a child was a national park book from Target. Ironically we had looked at it in the store. Sweet. Later, he was flipping through it and found a card with $100 cash! (Remember it is a poor school, so that was huge!)

Anyhow, H had been wanting some 45 pound dumbbells for the shed. We have up to 40s before needing the plate kind that go up to 65 or 85. I dunno. I don’t bother with them. So we went on Walmart.com and each dumbbell was $50. It was meant to be!

We were out of space on our dumbbell rack, so I suggested we get a mini rack for my smaller ones that were just sitting on the floor. Worked out perfectly.

And I could use the 45s for a few things - shrugs, chest press and pullovers. Usually I just make do with the 40s adding reps or slowing it down.

I have been on a weight loss journey since 2/7/24. I have reached my halfway point toward my goal. I have been 95-98% cardio with little weight training. I am just not ready yet to give up 3 workouts a week or so to do weights. I want to see more weight come off.

Workout currently is 5 days (M-F) walking 2.2 miles at lunch. Then doing 1 hour on the elliptical 7 days a week.

Way to go! Also you are a ROCKSTAR to manage AN HOUR on the elliptical daily - I don’t have the patience for that!

Would you consider doing 45 mins on the elliptical and then like 10 minutes of weights? A few days a week. (I get it, hard for me to also give up cardio to do weights)

Something you probably already know, but building muscle even with hand weights can really help shape your body in a positive way - maybe even more than losing weight can. Depends if you’re looking for change in the mirror or on the weight scale!

I scroll through TikTok while doing my hour.

I am getting there on the weights. Probably will be more willing to give up cardio time once I drop 25-30 more lbs.

I gave myself 1 year to hit my goal.

Just starting out, one doesn’t require weights to build/maintain muscle.

There are also step ups, lunges, pushups, planks, plank ups, inch worm, etc.

Another profitable run this morning! It’s so weird how much money I’ve found these last few years. The 30 before that I don’t think I kind more than a dollar total.

Summer is unfortunately here. Can’t wait until October! This weather just kills my body and my outlook. It’s a struggle every day.

Good haul! Whatcha gonna buy?!

I feel like I have perpetual wet hair. Exercise, rinse off. Walk the dog, rinse off. Swim in the pool, wet, then rinse off! It’s been a very very hot week.

Seriously. I sweat looking outside the window.

I’ll probably throw $2 away on a lotto ticket and keep $1. I love to dream

I am 127-0 on letting the elliptical machine beat me. Not yesterday, not today and not tomorrow.

Attended group pickleball lesson 3 (of 4) tonight. I’ve enjoyed learning and the collaborative spirit as we rotate partners for skill drills. Tonight also started learning about playing/scoring, which for me is not a fun (at least so far).

I like pickleball enough that I plan to purchase my own racket, probably from Dick’s. I don’t like the wooden ones provided by the city rec center that coordinated the class. But after trying a few of the instructor rackets, I think I could pick out a beginner paddle.

Pickleball players - feel free to offer your suggestions about things you like/dislike about various rackets.

I bought a pickleball racket and some balls. I optimistically stopped by the closes courts after running on Fri morning thinking they MIGHT be empty, enabling me to play against the rebound board. But no… 24 people playing on the 6 courts, with others waiting to cycle in as games ended. It was a friendly place, and a nice lady on the park bench with me encouraged me to join in. When I explained I’m newbie still learning how to score, she volunteered to explain as we watched a game together.

There are may pickleball paddles that I’m sure would be fine, but I do suggest you get some “good” balls. We tend to use Franklin (something with 40 in the name, maybe X-40). We can really tell when we are using cheaper balls. The Franklin’s aren’t very expensive.

Thanks! My new paddle is basic (on sale at Dick’s for $50), as step up from the cheapest wood models. For balls I did get outdoor Franklin X40. I opted for hot pink, to more easily know my balls. But… I noticed everybody had the yellow/green color at the courts - perhaps other players will want more normal color accustomed to.

Hopefullly you mean 50 :).
Some in my group hate yellow balls, so we tend to use pink and orange, but it seems like most people use yellow. If you play with others, I suggest you put your initials on your balls in multiple places. If you’re lucky the balls will last long enough that you need to do it again.

LOL - thanks, fixed my typo. $50.

This made me smile. Yes, I live in a state with lots of fitness options… with lots of season overlap.

@jmnva06 Gotta ask. Which are you preferring to watch nowadays? European championships or COPA America? Or both at the same time?

Still hotter than hades with no end in sight. It only feels like 95 at 11am. As soon as this “wave” will be over, it’ll be July and it’ll be normal for the next 2 months. Ugh. I need to move to alaska.

Did a stairmonster/bike combo at the gym where the AC was broken. Of course it was. Got asked again if I was in the military. Uh no. They would not want me thanks.

I enjoyed listening to my German adventure travel podcast “Welt Wach” episode. He was traveling through the Florida Keys! We were leaving for our trip there this time last year, so that was very fun. And he interviewed the people in English and then recaps in German so it’s much easier to follow. And sort of neat when I don’t realize he’s switching back and forth.

I’m traveling this weekend. So my hotel workout was a treadmill 5K and then a CF workout called Lynne. 5 rounds of maximum reps of bench press with DB’s and pull ups. A 3 minute rest between rounds.
