My Dad used say that walking upstairs backward is good training fo ski season. LOL - on flat ground sounds safer. Like the treadmill idea, though we don’t have one.
Shorts are ordered. If I like the one pair I will get more. Thanks again
Oh wow, I didn’t know “tight ass” was a diagnosis - yes, crude I know - delete if too inappropriate. Thanks for the reference info though!
OMG! Why yes, that description probably does fit…
Did our last training walk before vacation. We met up with a friend and did the 2.5 each way route to the our favorite beer garden.
We’ve got tourism walking in London on Moday and Inverness on Tuesday. Our Wednesday walk is at the battlefield at Culloden and the cairns of Clava. We start the Speyside Way on Friday
Lovely weather today. Enjoyed biking to the local lake trail, seeing all the festive group picnics (including one wedding celebration) and the many paddle boarders.
Decided to loop the lake twice. Total ride was 10 miles, flat and easy. At one point my husband passed going the other way on his ebike (which he uses with minimal assist). His longer route also goes on the country roads, about 23 miles with hills.
Wrist weights anyone???
I wear my OG wrist weights from the '80s!
No one asked for my $0.02, but I’ll give it anyway.
I think for wrist weights to make a difference in terms of “spot toning,” if that’s even possible, or building muscle, the amount of weight would have to be a lot. And I believe that would be bad for the joints, like the elbow or shoulder.
IMO, designing a separate workout, static or dynamic, centered around dumbbells would be better.
Some inspiration….
Two days into the trip.
Spent the afternoon of day 1 walking around north London, visted Kenmore House and Parliament Hill. Total steps 22k
Day 2–explored Inverness. Did a cool walking loop along the Ness River and did a tour/tasting at a place that is a distillery and brewery. Total step 15k
Wednesday was 10 miles around the Culloden Battlefield and Cairns of Clava (cool bronze age stone monuments).
Today was day 1 of our big walk. We did 13 miles along the coast and up the river.
I’m a little sidelined with what I’m quite sure is sciatica pain. I had a round of this at least once before though it’s been years. I’m actually pretty fine all day but upon rolling over while sleeping or getting out of bed in the morning is quite painful! What actually seems to help is movement - once I shake the painful sillies out in the morning.
So I’m limiting myself to walking and swimming - the strokes and movements I’ve seen mentioned online.
I looked up some exercises and sleeping tips and this morning was not perfect but better. Called my PCP this morning thinking I’d get it checked out - so annoying, they can get me in AUGUST 19. Sure. Or I can make that appt and they can ask the doc if she wants to see me sooner - and she is out of town this week anyway.
So I think I’ll give it a day or two, make that appt if I don’t see progress or honestly go the urgent care route if needed. Many of us have run into it, but who is going to wait 6 weeks for a sick visit?!!!
Are you able to see a PT w/out getting a referral from your PCP? We can do that here in the state I live. A friend just did that for her sciatica.
Really not sure about that! Seems odd to just assume I need a PT without a medical professional doing a once over. But I’ll consider that and ask if I call back in the next day or two.
Honestly, I trust PTs over doctors when it comes to sports injuries. Most of the doctors - at least in my world - give you some kind of pain med, tell you to stop doing X for Y days and that’s it. PTs tend to get to the root of the problem why it happened in the first place and fix that.
Agree! That’s why I suggested it. Can get in to see a PT much quicker and they are usually so knowledgeable.
This sounds like what I’ve recently dealt with. I have never, ever had back problems and then one day woke up with with this horrible back pain that was sharp and tweaking and would take your breath away if you moved a millimeter this way and would go away if you moved a millimeter that way, but you never could quite nail down which ways they were! It felt exactly like what sciatica sounds like…but I don’t have back issues, at all, ever so I assumed I had at some time pulled a weird muscle somewhere, although it absolutely did not feel like muscle pain. After several weeks of lying on couch with heating pad on lower back and pillows under knees, and lots of Advil I called the orthopedic docs, they took walk ins (really surprised they saw me right away very close to home - Resurgeons) - took x-rays and determined it was just very bad arthritis in lower back that caused inflammation that was putting pressure on nerves causing the sharp pain. Prescribed muscle relaxers and said to continue with the Advil and also prescribed PT which I have yet to start, they are very, very busy. Told me to continue walking which does help with the pain after I start slow it starts to go away. It actually took general anesthesia from my uterine surgery to make the pain go away (muscle relaxers did nothing, Advil was great)…it hasn’t come back. I’m hoping the PT will teach me what to do to help keep the inflammation at bay. Also will be going on RA infusion medicine in the fall which may help with osteoarthritic inflammation as well. Edit to say, I’m on Medicare, can go where I want - thank heavens.
I took the advice above and called our in-system PT office (I work for a health care system). They DO need a referral and they are backed up till August 1 for intro evals. But called my doc and asked for a referral and should get that. And potentially could have an opening come up sooner. It’s at least another tool in my tool box to line up if I can’t resolve on its own.
I’m totally fine during the day, working regular hours, doing some walking and daily swimming - which seemed like a recommended activity by some articles. It’s that in the night rolling over and getting out of bed first 10 minutes that is !!!
I feel better just having something in action. And I am doing some OTC pain relief in the meantime.
And I’m still closing my rings daily!!!
