Yesterday was a rest day and we hung out all morning. In the afternoon, we did a 6 mile loop to see the big attractions near the village - a stone that was part of a neolithic monument, a 16th century chapel and ruins of an abbey.

@jmnva06 - what an amazing journey! Would you care to share what type/brand(s) of shoes you and your wife use for all the walking?

I’ve started wearing barefoot shoes a lot but not sure if they could support 16+ miles a day (whew!).

Don’t assume that boots that are suitable for hiking in the US will survive British weather, even in the summer. These were my boots after 9 days of constant wet-dry-wet-dry (we ended up replacing both our waterproofs and our boots during the hike!):

Wow, Twoin18! Good to know!

For our 6 mile day yesterday we were in our regular sneakers (DW wears Hokas and I wear New Balance).

For hiking, my wife wears mid-height Hokas and I wear Lowa Renegades (tbh guessig on name based on REI site). Both our boots cover the ankle and provide good support

DW’s Hokas are losing their tread and may need to be replaced. Mine are still in good shape.

Her Hokas are just about 7 years old and mine are 8

Husband and I both wear Lowa Renegades. I think we’ve each had multiple pairs.

ETA - you can wear out your boots in the US too - Hiking in Waimea Canyon, Kauai

Thanks for sharing the footwear info! Goes to show you don’t need a bunch of brand new, special gear to have amazing adventures. I love that!

Merrill makes some excellent trail running shoes and hiking boots. I light trail run in their Vapor Glove’s. Their shoes are known for being grippy and light.

Plus one!! We wore Merrill hiking shoes on our Kalalau trail hike eons ago. There was lots of mud and a few stream crossings. They survived! And so did we. We hiked many other trails after that in those shoes. Yardwork finally did them in. Kinda hard to see in this pic, but it gives some reference.

So as of Saturday I was 164 days into a weight loss/exercise journey. Down 95lbs.

One of the best feelings is that clothes that were too small for me are now too big for me.

congratulations!!! That is a phenomenal accomplishment!

Congrats! That is awesome.

Exercise check in -
I’m playing pickleball 3-4 times a week. I’m in a little slump (not playing as well as I usually do), but hopefully I’ll get out of it soon. It may have something to do with me exercising “hard” too many days in a row.

I’ve been riding my bike outside a fair amount lately. Last week we actually did 3 separate rides. Ever since I got my fancy new bike, my outer right calf has been hurting some after riding. I guess I have to pay for a “fancy fitting” to go with that fancy bike :). Apparently you can have the pleasure of getting a proper fit for up to $350 - OUCH! I may try moving my seat position a couple more times on my own before paying that.
I’ve been TRYING to do more weights, and doing some core work.
I’m also starting to add in a little balance work.

Anyone have any balance exercises that are fairly easy?

Great job! Keep up the hard work!

Probably the easiest is to stand on one foot while you brush your teeth. You can kill two birds with one stone! Work up to 1 minute per foot. If you’re really brave and good, try it with your eyes closed.

You can google standing yoga balance poses and it will give you a lot. But in simple terms, you can just lift one knee to your chest, squeeze and hold. Repeat on other side. Try holding your leg out by itself, bent at a 90 degree angle. Then, if flexible, try holding it straight out in front. You can either hold your big toe, or use a strap/belt/anything to make that easier. Then you can do the same sequence rotating your leg out to the side. And then you can also do the standard quad stretch without holding onto anything else. 3-5 long slow breaths per pose is pretty standard before moving onto the next thing.

Tree pose is very easy and accessible. You can start by putting your foot on your calf, not all the way up to the top of your thigh.

I think half moon pose is pretty easy, but some people think it’s hard. Of course, I don’t aim for looking pretty at it either. Same with reverse half moon.

Warrior 3 is fairly simple. And there are all kind of exercises, which are similar to the one legged deadlift where you use bands and weights and such, but that is getting a little more complex.

What type of weight lifting exercise will help with this saggy arm skin? It’s gotten more pronounced the last few years.

Really any arm exercise like curls or tricep work. Add some shoulder work in as well. In 5-6 months of consistent work and you will start seeing change.
