Flip #7 Mid Century Modern Mold

Great job on the appliances! The oven looks far more expensive than even its MSRP, much less your cost. I hope you can create a convenient shelf area for a countertop microwave instead of going with a built-in. It will save you a lot of money and will save future homeowners money as well when it’s time to replace it. I like my cheap (<$200) countertop microwave that’s hidden away far more than the built-in Wolf in our main kitchen.

Here is the kitchen cabinet style I am going to use for this project. Still working on kitchen layout, but there’s limited space so it is going to have to be ‘what it is’

Very MCM on the kitchen cabinets… perfect for this house!!! Also congrats on the appliances - some tremendous value there!!!

KITCHEN LAYOUT

I just loaded a photo of the kitchen layout into the Flickr group. I had a lot of challenges because of plumbing issues and limited space. Still trying to find a place to put a microwave shelf, but it will work out eventually. I’ve got two good storage options in the design; 30" tall pull out pantry and a big corner lazy susan. Going for the minimal no uppers look across the back that you can see from the family room

PROGRESS

Our roof replacement has turned into a giant money pit. Everywhere we look we have to replace fascia, some of the shiplap, plywood, etc. Replacing the shiplap means that I will never be able to match the dark stain on the ceiling boards inside the courtyard, so it is going to have to be painted. Painting that courtyard roof is going to be a pain because it is so high. May have to rent scaffolding. But everything is almost done

We are starting to paint in the bedrooms! I love when the paint goes on because everything starts to look fresh and clean. The bedrooms are going to be a light silvery/grey color. I found a 5 gal bucket of Ooops paint and cut it in half with white and it is the perfect color.

CB - here is the tool that was invaluable for us for painting a very high vaulted ceiling.

It is sturdy and does the job unlike the flimsier cheaper poles.

Love the Ooops paint. Excellent color choice! And one fewer bucket of dry paint to the landfill!

That’s a beautiful, tranquil color.

Can’t wait to see the finished product. Looking great. If we were looking for a place in SD, this MCM would be high on my list.

Master Bath Tile

Spent yesterday searching for the floor tile for the master bathroom. We have the statement large geometric relief tile on the shower walls so the flooring has to be a good contrast/match to the shower wall tile.

So, a trip to Floor and Decor about 30 minutes away. Found a gorgeous carribean blue/white/light grey atomic shaped flat pebble type floor. At $22/sq ft!!! Of course I love it. I could not afford to buy it for the whole floor. It definitely had the right style for the house. But then I started looking at some floor tile designs on Houzz and came up with a solution. Putting the expensive stuff in the shower floor and then doing a long rectangle design in front of the vanity. Only needed 30 sq ft of the expensive tile and filling in with a nice textured light gray for the rest of the floor, that was on sale for .99 cents/sq ft

Here is the cool retro floor tile

The layout of the bathroom is very similar to the one in the Florida listing posted above. I hope this link goes straight to the master bath, if not scroll through. Note that there are polished concrete floors in the bathroom, including shower floor. Yikes!!! can you say slippery??

CB, we used a pebble floor in our shower. I love it!

Love the pebbles. Lots of grout lines so not slippery. Perfect for showers!

One of those chacun a son gout moments: I hate every single thing about that FL house and its contents except for the fun bathroom with the multicolored tile wall and what appears to be a very cool tile job or maybe cutout rug on the floor of the otherwise hideously sterile kitchen.

I know everyone will disagree with me!

Really like the pebble floor.

Carry on. B-)

I was pretty particular about the pebble tile. I didn’t want the ‘bumpy’ tile. I focused on the flat cut stone tile and then found the one with the atomic retro shapes and the beautiful muted colors with some hint of turquoise and fell in love

Consolation, I think you already made that pretty clear in a previous post.

Consolation, I agree that the MCM furniture does not look comfortable to me. But, I cannot ignore that the MCM architecture is hot in the San Diego market right now. I’m just hoping that some young buyers are out looking in my price range in September

MCM furniture CAN be comfy If made just right. Lounging in some as we speak. Have to kick my cats off it because they think it is theirs. Nope. B-)

@doschicos, I thought this was a different house! :slight_smile:

I had to revisit that powder room: it really is adorable.

There is no doubt that MCM is very in now. Coralbrook, you always do a wonderful job and I’m sure your house will do well.

How boring if we all had the same taste.

“How boring if we all had the same taste.”

Agree! More than 100%!!! I would not do well in a 'hood of cookie-cutter houses. Maybe that is another reason I dislike townhome and “detached condos.” Our current street has a good mix of houses of various styles, from Craftsman to some Mediterranean kind. Surprisingly, they don’t look like a hodgepodge… Missing a MCM one though as the 'hood was built in 70s and 80s and on.

KITCHEN CABINETS

Yesterday I rushed into IKEA because they started a 15% off and free delivery for kitchen cabinet purchases. My cabinet order came to $8,600 with tax. This is because I am taking the cabinets all the way down the long wall into dining room. This will provide a ton of storage, and I’m hoping it will look cool because there are not any uppers, just the big kitchen vent hood.

Well, I didn’t read the fine print… What I got was $1,250 of store credit!!! In other words, I paid the full $8,600 and then they handed me two big store credits. OK, now I have to figure out what I am going to buy at IKEA for the project that costs $1250!! Guessing I’m going to start designing some bath vanities out of IKEA cabinets
