Florida State University Class of 2028 Official Thread

Is there a FSU FYA (First Year Abroad) group by chance on CC? My searching skills are failing me. My kid is OOS and signed up to do the FYA program and get the OOS Waiver. He will be going to Europe this fall 2024.

not sure on CC but there are on facebook
S21 did FYA and it was amazing, Florence for Fall/Spring then Valencia for Summer

There doesn’t look to be a CC FSU FYA forum. If you click on ā€œFlorida State Universityā€ in blue right under the thread title, it’ll take you to a list of all the FSU forums.

If anyone is looking to get their kid a computer for school, the FSU bookstore is having and Apple sale this week. I just purchased one for my daughter online and it’s shipping to the house for free. The deals were very good too, better than what I paid for my son at U. of Maryland. Paid less for the FSU deal and got a better computer than son 2 years ago!!! Added bonus of having tech support at FSU for my daughter because we bought the computer from FSU.

Make sure you compare with Costco (if a member). They have apple products that are significantly cheaper than buying direct. Not sure if it’s better than this sale though.

Just used this as well to get a better deal than I could find anywhere else! Thanks for posting. Can you explain more about tech support?

I think mostly it’s a peace of mind thing for me. If there is something wrong with the computer at least she will be able to walk it to the place it was purchased. The school does have tech support for students and even has services if someone needs a computer/electronics fixed. They also give loaner computers while the broken computer is being worked on. Again, it probably has nothing to do with where you bought the computer but I put a little stock into the ā€œI bought it from you, please helpā€ philosophy.

For me this is a huge reason why I’m strongly considering for my son!!! I’ve heard other horror stories of their kid’s computer crashing, and then having to either wait a week or two without one while it’s being fixed, or having to buy a new ā€œtemporaryā€ replacement laptop, as schools and students are so reliant on being ā€œconnectedā€, and there’s only so much you can do on your phone…

Full disclosure…I dont know if you have to buy the computer from the FSU bookstore in order to get loaner computer when needed. If you find a better deal elsewhere, or already have a laptop to use, you might want to contact the FSU library/tech center and see if the loaners are for anyone that needs them. I tried asking the question to the ambassadors on our tour but they didnt know the answer. They did say that loaners are available, though.

Did you guys go with the Pro or is the Air enough? DS will likely be a Bio/Chem major, this is our oldest so not sure if major matters when deciding on laptops?

Couldn’t agree more with this statement! It may be a typical offering in the state of Florida but I don’t think this is a universal strategy from other colleges and I believe it artificially amplifies their acceptance rate.

Hi SSB_Mom, you can’t go wrong with either one. I would pick the one that fits budget as well as meets your kid’s preferences (screen sizes available for example). Either machine will be fine for basically any major. It’s unlikely they will be doing any compute intensive work on their own machine, if at all. Personally, my kids both chose Air because they are a smaller form factor, easy to fit in any back packs.

Same major for my daughter so we decided to get more storage and get the air rather than pay more for the power of the pro that her major won’t likely use. We are hoping the extra storage will make it last longer.

Perfect, thank you! I was also leaning towards Air for the portability reasons as well.

Great idea!

IF you compare FSU and UGA ( picked randomly closest similar size and ranked school outside of Florida) Common Data Sheet ( Section D Transfer Admission ) they enrolled about the same amount of transfer students UGA enrolled about 50 more both just under 1700
UGA all would start in Fall
FSU Fall/Spring or summer start

You will find many urban areas have community colleges Tallahassee included.
TCC while it has about 12000 students about just over half are full time.

While there are students that want to transfer to a 4 year Universities that start out at Community colleges. Many are there for a 2 year degree. That could be in Health such as RN, Dental hygienist, or in Criminology due to some Law enforcement agencies requiring an AS to get promoted.
Plus they offer many certificates such as EMS, Paramedic, Pharmacy Tech as well as many more

S21 is a Junior and we have been up to Campus many times and it is a safe nurturing environment with many like minded individuals.
Were students from TCC or FAMU commingling with the FSU students hard to tell they all look like College Students
S21 lives in the College Town Area and my son says its mainly if not all FSU students

Can you party at FSU, Yes but I would say any large university with over 30,000 undergrads you can find a party if that is what you want.

Thanks for your perspective. I agree with most of your points. FSU is a bit different though than some other urban campuses with multiple colleges because the TCC students (and FAMU students) live in much closer proximity to FSU than is typical at least in the SE. FSU is also ranked the #2 party school, which is way up there so think the extra students probably help contribute to that culture (I’m sure FSU students also heavily contribute themselves). Our family is weighing whether the party school culture factors are enough to favor another school or not. Lots of great things about FSU no doubt.
