Florida State University Class of 2028 Official Thread

It is a separate letter/link. The acceptance one doesn’t say, but there is separate link under it for scholarship and another for honors.

Another way to get some of the Honor’s benefits (like advising and early registration) is by doing the Degree in 3 or 4 in More programs (which would allow you to either graduate in 3 years or get both an undergraduate and graduate degree in 4 years). I don’t know all the specifics, but if you participate in these programs, you do get specialized advising and early registration - the benefits that I see as the primary benefit for Honor’s.

@kevi2900 thanks for the info!

OOS Daughter was accepted. I’m not sure how FSU recalculates the GPA, but on her transcript she has a ~3.5 UW and a ~4.2 W. She was doing well at a rigorous high school known for lower GPA’s for 2 years, but had to transfer for junior year to our local public school and did very well there. She has merit aid or honors at schools that seem to dive into the essays/recommendations/transcripts and has been rejected from the “numbers” schools.

Just wanted to post because it can be really stressful to see all the awesome numbers some students have, but there is hope for students to get into some really good schools that focus on the more holistic approach.

She had pinpointed FSU as her #1 option very early in the process and was lucky everything came together for her as she got into honors and gets to go through the Presidential Scholars Process at FSU. I think she has already packed her suitcase and is ready to get down to FL

hi DanceMom2006 (from a dance mom 2005!) – i guess i’d encourage you to not count out a school if every thing is good about it - except honors.

My kids have all attended large state U’s; and have never applied to honors, and have not missed a thing from what we can tell.

Our daugher’23 and son '20 both got the OOS FSU waiver (but aren’t attending) - honors was not even part of their thought process. My S20 at bama has had some GREAT offers this year for jobs upon graduation.

our D16 attended at top grad school and loves her architecture job, our S15 refused to do honors and it came with a scholarship, and ended up in his actuary job sitting right next to a kid who did a big honors program . . .

No regrets in any way about not doing honors! There are enough programs, clubs, and opportunities at schools. FSU would have been a top choice for D23 & S20 had it not been for their majors (engineering) and classes were off campus (that was our deal breaker). anyway – just wanted to share that side of non-honors! good luck!

Out of curiosity - did your kids end up going to UCF or UF - their engineering programs are considered stronger than FSU. If so, how did everything work out? We are still considering UCF - but the merit money from FSU was greater (and since we are OOS and no Bright Futures, the money really is an issue ).

The only downside really to FSU engineering is the engineering campus is a mile or so from main campus. However I am told it is a very nice campus and students love it.
Really unless you want to work at cape Canaveral
Don’t see benefit of UCF over FSU unless it’s a better fit for student

Daughter OOS admitted for fall ‘24 for Literature/English (pre-law), as well as accepted to Honors. She didn’t receive any scholarships or OOS tuition waiver, unfortunately. Has anyone heard of luck appealing to get the waiver?
Stats: ranked 1st in class
Gpa- 4.0uw 4.7w
ACT-29 with 30 superscore; 10/12 writing
60+ dual enrollment college credits
Great ECs with leadership and founding

Anyone want to share what the campus tour is like? We will be going out this spring to visit the campus for the first time. Any tips on things to visit or see that are not covered in the tour? DS was accepted but it’s low on his list because he has no idea what the school is like!

You certainly CAN appeal, but since the OOS waiver is based on scores, and it is not a case where the decision is based upon the student as a whole, I believe the appeal will not result in a change. Your daughter’s ACT is what prevented her from the waiver. She can retest perhaps? Your daughter’s resume is impressive though! Also, be happy the Florida OOOS tuition is so ridiculously inexpensive compared any other State’s OOS tuition!

Agree as it relates to FSU engineering. The engineering campus is nice, safe, and quiet. UCF does have a good program and my senior daughter got into UCF and USF applying as a biomedical engineering major, but she selected FSU. She is graduating soon, doing a lot of research, paid internships, etc. The professors she is working with are trying to have her stay on to continue the research she is involved in, but I think she is eager to get into the workforce, so will likely do that when she graduates in a few months.
Nothing but good things to say about FSU Engineering.

Do they do admitted student days?

our engineering kids ended up at Bama & UNL. . . . basically looked at FSU for the weather and great OOS pricing… . but it wasn’t enough to give up offers from these two other schools. We’ve been pleased with their outcomes!! freshman ME has a Colorado full-funded internship lined up for this upcoming summer; and CE senior at Bama has had some great job offers. IT IS ALL GOOD; i’m proud of engineering students everywhere, and there is a need for them (especially it seems in the electrical fields).

Thank you! She’s going to take her shot and write a (hopefully compelling) letter, asking for reconsideration factoring in the writing portion score. (Attaching updated 1st semester transcripts, rec letters for scholarships, merit awards she’s received from other OOS schools.) The worst they can say is no, in which case Ohio State Honors (in-state) goes back to top choice while we wait for the remaining decisions and final packages.

Son got in with a 4.0/4.6 35 ACT. Got in for Finance with full out of state waiver, IB diploma (2K per year) and was named as semifinalist for Presidential scholars. Very impressive package.

Does anyone know how many people are semifinalists. We are trying to gauge the likelihood of moving to finalist which is an in person weekend where they select Scholars.

Daughter was deferred.
4.0 UW
4.73 W
1 out of 358 rank
28 ACT
4 yr Varsity athlete
VP SGA, Pres NHS, team captain, etc
Job/community service hours

Sorry… that’s brutal.

I’ve read that some schools that are nervous when test scores don’t match the GPA (i.e., grade inflation). Did she take the ACT more than once? Consider applying test optional? In state or OOS? If in state I think you should try and appeal the decision.

Unless something changed since S22 applied, all state schools in FL require ACT/SAT scores. So test optional wouldn’t have been a choice.

This is accurate. All florida publics require tests, either ACT, SAT, or CLT.

My D applied to FSU last year - almost as a joke. We live in Ohio and she had never talked about going to school in FL. When she was accepted, we decided to visit - she was planning to attend CWRU. I booed a few days at FSU and then we went to Disney. I was only going for the experience. Well, we both fell in love with campus, the “vibe” of the students, and the weather. After digging deeper into the academic standards (on line), she made the decision to go to FSU. She has had an amazing experience so far. There is a true community feel at FSU that I did not expect - with the size. It’s only been the 2 of us since she was little, but I actually feel comfortable with her so far away. I know she’s HAPPY, has made great friends, has support with advising, oh, and is learning. We weren’t able to get into a formal tour, we just walked around the campus. We talked to a few students, but it was mostly a gut decision. Good luck!
