“If the Queen had balls, she’d be the King.”

Well, in order to be politically correct today, one must also consider the fact that if the Queen had balls, “she” could really be the King in “transition” prior to becoming the Queen.

Carolyn, I think the campus culture of SMU is very different from Trinity in several respects. I don’t wanna go there.

U Miami would be Tulane would be USC…too gorgeous weather, Latin influence. Not possible to relocate to Northeast.

Carolyn…you’re usually so right about campus cultures but I think your assessment of Trinity is a bit dated…the college has changed alot in the last four years. Still has the rich prep influence but getting many, many more community service oriented, really bright, talented, down-to-earth public school kids

Crash - Oh, I know Trinity has changed somewhat but what I was really hoping for is an answer to the if “SMU were in the northeast it would be…” question and I used Trinity’s traditional rep as a possible suggestion. I’d be open to others :)

Hmmm…now you got me thinking…Smu = maybe Washington and Lee? or Colgate? Union? I dunno really but I see where you were headed now…

I think SMU = Wash/Lee is a decent match, encompassing the preppiness, the drinking, and the conservatism.

SMU is a hard one. W&L is a fair match on the outward aspects. Yale for the serious money (would have made sense for the other Bush daughter to go there, vs UT), lots of real money at SMU. To make for even more oddness, SMU has a prestigious music school, particularly church music/choral music, ala St. Olaf’s.

Many years ago USC was playing against a local college in football. The SMU students showed up in support of USC. They had a banner which read “SMU Supports USC-Spoiled Rich Kids Stick Together”. SMU remains the only school I am aware of that dormitory rooms are decorated by credentialed designers hired by the parents of the students. That being said, the school does have a very good reputation in the Southwest and seems to serve its clientele well.

Point of clarification: Isn’t Davidson alot more conservative than Williams? (just wondering)

Also, can we shift away from “always the same schools” to other ones that I haven’t a clue about re: their “matches”, but would like to know…
Such as : Hobart and William Smith, St. Lawrence, Allegheny, Rhodes, Centre, Goucher, Hood, Skidmore, Quinnipiac, Muhlenberg, Towson, Catawba, Drexel, Temple, Bates

crash, These days some might argue that almost any place is more conservative than Williams, which appears to be trying very hard to shed every trace of its previous alleged social elitism while of course maintaining the academic excellence for which it is perennially well known. (And yes, Davidsion probably is more conservative than Williams yet in real world terms it isn’t conservative–few college campuses are.)

More generally, I think people are referring to overall mood on various campuses, as in accessibleprofessors versus lots of TAs, pre-professional versus heavily Ph.D., strong athletic activities versus no football team, or attractive theater versus a multipurpose auiditorium. And then there are intangibles, which are the stuff of rumor much of the time but often supported by visits to assorted campuses or knowing students or being a parent at several schools over the years.The parallels are not meant to be precise, and aren’t meant to be taken as scientific–I think the idea was just to bring non-northeastern schools into a realm that is somewhat more familiar to more CC posters.

Gottcha. Thanks.

Baylor = Drexel & Rice = UPenn
Sewanee = Allegheny
Clemson = Penn State (with less academic focus)
Elon = Vassar
UNC Asheville = Skidmore
Warren Wilson = College of the Atlantic
Furman = Ithaca (I’m not sure-Furman gave me trouble)

What about Agnes Scott, Mount Holyoke, Randolph-Macon, Smith, etc.?

Warbler…
I always thought Vassar was a bit on the intellectual side…and judging the caliber of kids from my S’s HS who went to Elon, they weren’t particularly cerebral…Maybe I have Vassar all wrong?

Maybe, crash…I’m not sure. Everyone I know that’s at Elon was in IB (mostly bright kids), so maybe I have a biased viewpoint. The curriculums/offerings are remarkably similar, and the female presence at both is very similar. Elon gave me a bit of trouble, so if anyone can think of a better match??? I do think Elon is underrated, though.

You’re definitely right about Vassar being intellectual, though. Our French teacher was the valedictorian at Vassar, and she is one of the smartest people I’ve met.

Rhodes = Haverford+Bowdoin+truncated core curriculum/required religion classes
It is urban/old suburb, like Haverford, and puts emphasis on community service while in school like a Quaker school, but the student body is a little more preppy like a Bowdoin or a Lafayette, maybe Trinity; some athletics that are well supported, but not overly athletic like a Williams/Davidson.

Student body wise-
Furman = Bucknell, with less alcohol (Furman is still officially dry), don’t know about the course offerings, though, I don’t think they have engineering = Univ of Richmond (same, I’m comparing student bodies, primarily)

U. Michigan would be something like Carnegie Mellon
UCB would be like, ahhhhh, MIT
UVa would be like…ah…Brown
wake forest would be tufts
William and mary would be Dartmouth

Elon would maybe be more like Hobart or Villanova?

Also, how about Drew, the College of New Jersey, Mary Washington, Old Dominmion, Tulane, Emory

Hmm…Tulane = NYU?
Emory = Possible mix of Georgetown and Carnegie Mellon-engineering (unless you include Emory’s Oxford- that could be confusing)
Johns Hopkins = University of Rochester (strong sciences/med, music)

Hey Carolyn - my S just read over the Phantom Professor thread and then this one and he said, “You know, Carolyn’s kinds right, Mom. Trinity still has alot of those SMU type kids there…” Oh well. Shows what I know!
