FOR Pakistani's.......

Can anyone explain that what exactly iz a “safe Stat”???..i hav like 98ish on my 4 AS levels (100 on math) and 96ish on ma O levels(…I LIVE AT SIALKOT)…I study at “the city school”… my recommendation were from principle and CRO…she says they were awesome…and I m the head boy of school…and leading other clubs like dramatic and blah blah …basically i guess the stuff u people r doing aswell…!!!..and well the weak thing SAT!!!..i have 2330 on my SAT II…800 on math level2…780 on physics…750 on chem(errrrghhh…a boy with a low b on his AS got a 800 there)…and SAT1 i gave this oct…i got a 1970:-(…i neva got time to reappear…
1360 on math and CR…760 on math and 600 on critical reading… WELL i personally called some universities and made a sad voice and said my eeenglissh izz nt my furst language so i really think my CR and writing were affected cuz of that…and guess what they said!!!..they said that 4 international studnts they only luk 4 high mathematical reasoning scores and duke actually said that my AS and o levels r the most imp part of my application…yaaahhhh…i guess this is a relief to many pakistani guys…!!!..

AND YEAH ANOTHER BIG QUESTION???..I prepared 4 my SAT from official collegeboard SAT book and princeton review and barrons…my average SAT score used to be above 2100 and on one collegeboard test i had a 2300!!!..but i had such a big downfall on actual…did this happen to anyone else too???

and yeah can anyone explain wht cornell waived my TOEFL requirement …???

dude…please post this on pakistani thread

Hey superleader. A safe stat is basically one that is far above the standard of the university you’re applying to. American universities know that international students tend to score lower on the english sections of the SAT because its not their first language, so don’t worry about that too much. However, they certainly consider them. I think that for a university of the calibre of Duke (ridiculously competitive) your CR and wiritng scores ought to at least be above 650. If you score big on the TOEFL you can make amends for a low english SAT score. Practice tests for the SAT are only estimates for the real thing. When you give the SAT for real you obviously are under more pressure which tends to work against you. From my experience one should expect to score at least a 100 less on the SAT than they do on practice exams. Oh and Cornell waives the TOEFL for CR scores of above 670.

well if cornell waives TOEFL requirement for CR above 670 why did they waive mine…i hav a 600…not that i m complaining!!!

and this iz a pakistani tread aswell!!!..

I agree with Flibb. You’ll get a better response there!

And to address your problem, Cornell must have waived your CR requirement because of some other high academic achievement like a high A in O Levels English or something. We all know that universities consider everything an applicant submits.

About the difference in your SAT scores from practice tests to the real test; I used to get around 2100 in the practice tests (as I was planning for a mid-tier college) but I ended up with a 1700. That was a bummer! :(

Bottom line, I think you did good. Considering this year’s scores. I don’t think yours are that low! Cheer up! :)

@talha adnan…i guess this year scores r generally low…cuz year before last a lot of guys had scores in 2200…this year i guess no one even at beacon house margalla(i know the campus shifted to bani something…)…has a 2200+…

and yeah if u were planning for a mid-tier college i guess 2100 iz so ok even with top tiers aswell(i think 2100 asures admission to mid-tier)…with that score u can hope to get into an Ivy…cornell’s bottom 25th percentile last year was 1280(critical reading and math only)…
and i heard a guy frm islamabad with a 1700 got into yale…by any chance iz that u???

(how do u put smiles on CC posts???)

I really wish I was that guy, but NO! It must have someone else. :D

In my opinion, we can’t classify an applicant on his SAT scores. It is an important factor in the whole process, still its not EVERYTHING!

( : ) = , : ( = :frowning: , : D = )

^ Couldn’t agree more

SAT scores suck big time. Really big time, man.

SAT scores suck big time? Coming from you? You had a pretty decent score. Plus, G-berg is worth anything. :)

on all collegeboard tests i got 2350+ excpt for the one tht was the real test…its the norm however i did gt a close 2270 thats in Jan…this year SAT results are not as bad in fact never from my school had there been 5 ppl with 2200+ (and one with Critical reading 800)in the past 3 years…I went to columbia upenn and yale info sessions and also had a meeting with a penn admissions counselor and not surprisingly they told me that they only way we can equate the internationals with US students is by their SAT scores…however if any other achievement that is really extraordinary on part of internationals is their leadership potential and country level sports in that case we can offer marginal forgiveness.

I m nt talkin abt karachi people…who hav a much greater exposure and much better facilities and better teachers and I JUST CAME TO KNOW I HAD TO GIVE SAT IN MY GRADE TENTH(at the end of it )!!!..u people know it in grade fifth… which means i touched its books in like last month before test…

NOTE:DISCOURAGING POSTS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THIS THREAD

And by the way year before last a friend of mine with a 2300+ got on waiting on Yale…and others in 2000 got in…they basically luk for growing potential in a person…

AND YAAAAAAHHHHHHH I GOT INTO CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVESITY…!!! but i hav to wait for a letter to see if i hav qualified for a scholarship…keeping my fingers crossed!!!

^ May you lead the way :D

BUT btw, a friend with a 2350 SAT I and a 2400 SAT II got rejected from Yale, Stanford, Harvard and MIT last year. He’s thoroughly enjoying himself at Princeton, though.

I hope this post was encouraging :)

Hello all!

@ theGame … did the person ur referring to go to LGS JT by any chance?

Yep ;)

Don’t reveal names and/or details here. PM me if necessary.

@ super_leader

Completely disagree with you on what you said about Karachiites having greater exposure. That might be only true for at most 3 schools. At the rest its up to each person to do the research and apply cuz there’s no counselor support. I know kids in my school who would have had a great shot at MIT e.t.c, but didnt apply cuz they didnt know any better. I didnt apply to any colleges EA/ED because I had no idea what it was until it was too late. I have a friend with a world top in maths and ad maths. If he had been at a school like KGS or Aitchison, I am sure he would have been accepted to atleast a pretty good uni, if not the best. Anyway, what hook did that guy with the 1700 SAT have?

@nrmncpr
well U TOTALLY CANT COMPARE SIAKLOT WITH KARACHI…JUST ACCEPT THAT KARACHI IZ A SUPER PLACE FOR STUDIES and after being in Karachi if anyone says its no gud well that person should save hiz breadth cuz thatz nt true!!!..
and yeah if a person with world distinctions was unaware of applying and stuff i guess he must neva had hav time to come outta his buks and hit the PC…no offence!!!..
Even though I am at The City School…not a SINGLE person was there to guide me…i had to do it all myself …and yeah i didnt know when to apply ED aswell…i guess that makes your chances better!!!..but no use crying ova spilt milk :(
