Fordham Class of 2024

Just received package one hour ago. 29k a year in merit aid.

We received financial package today for $30,500.

@formerfirstgen Congrats.

does anyone know when ea deferral decisions are released?

Is anyone else struggling with the cost / benefit of Fordham? My DD received $28,000 in merit, but it’s still her most expensive option. It’s not exactly an Ivy, so not sure it’s worth the extra money. Thoughts?

@Bwildered1 I guess it would depend on how much more expensive than the next best option. For my son it will cost more than some other options but for me the difference is not enough to deny the opportunity that Fordham provides. To live and work (intern) in NYC has great value in my opinion. The size (relatively small) of student body and campus are also positives in my eyes. These are tough decisions for sure.

For my DD the cost is still too high even with merit. So she will be declining their offer.

If we dont get the tuition national merit scholarship she will be declining the offer, too. The lackluster hang out spaces and food are negatives for my kid. Once that student center will be built that will be great, but our kids will miss the boat on that improvement, and just have to deal with construction.

Congratulations on all the wonderful acceptances and merit aid.
Many are stating they got significantly better aid at other schools. Can you share what schools as I have a rising senior for next year and the aid seems excellent offered by Fordham.

@bewildered1 I agree with you. My daughter received several other merit scholarships and this is the lowest yet with the highest tuition. She received a full tuition for 4 years at another school so that one is our front runner at least until RD decisions are release. If nothing else is comparable then we have our decision and I am very happy with it.

@suzyQ7 and @silverpurple we will be declining this one as well.

My 2 cents, son graduated Fordham 3 years ago and has been making 6 figures since. Was not a Gabelli student. Had multiple offers before graduation, had great internships.
D21 has Fordham on short list and I am also struggling with the $80k per year. Fordham squeezes every last penny out of you with the CSS Profile. Merit aid does NOT increase year to year so several years out can be looking at $90-95k per year.
Today, I can not justify it. No school is worth that money IMO

I think the compounding 3-5% increases year over year have put us in a place where sticker price (even with some small discounts) has ā€œjumped the sharkā€. Even rich people don’t think it’s worth $300,000 for 4 years… maybe for Ivy or equivalents, but that competition is just so fierce that I see many Northeast wealthy families encouraging their kids to go to State flagships- especially the fun RaRa football schools in the south. The more talented kids get amazing honors college opportunities at a fraction of the cost of a northeastern overpriced private.

@suzyQ7, I appreciate your feedback. Interestingly, we also looked at several RaRa state schools (even though we’re neither rich nor from the Northeast) and one rose straight to the top of our DD’s list as soon as we visited. She got a great merit offer and was accepted into honors, so the only disadvantage is that it can’t compete with NYC internships as @MaybeFordhamDad points out (it’s four hours from any major city). But knowing that we’d save a minimum of $100,000 in just four years let alone a likely fifth year, the decision gets easier and easier the closer we get to May 1.

@silverpurple

Hope you get the NMF scholarship. Minor correction the first phase of the new student center is scheduled for completion in August 2021 and will entail the construction of a roughly 75,000-square-foot addition in the area in front of the existing McGinley Center. So the fall 2020 entering class will definitely benefit from it for 3 of their four years. The plan is pretty good that they build the new extension first in phase 1 and then in phase 2 existing center will be gutted and renovated.

It looks magnificent but if construction is NY time i envision delays. I cant think of any NY city projects that adhered to their timetables.

Lol Silverpurple, the Tappan Zee Bridge was just done ahead of schedule and under budget

Just jumping in on this thread to get some advice.

We are looking at Fordham for full price - is it worth it? Our D has a healthy scholarship at a comparable school, but she loves Fordham.

The net cost difference between Fordham and her #2 is about $35k per year, making Fordham about $140k more before adjusting for inflation.

I’m choking on the difference but willing to take the leap if a Fordham education is really worth it.

If you have to take on debt I would say no. Also, Fordham’s costs have been increasing more rapidly than public schools. In 4 years it will easily be $90k/year.

My D and I went to admitted students day at Lincoln Center yesterday and we were both very impressed and she is seriously considering attending. In addition to the academics and amazing internship opportunities, she really liked the vibe of the school and students she saw. She got around $27k in Merit Aid, so still expensive. Has anyone had success with appealing for more money?

@Ohtheplaceswego - Glad you had a great time. Merit is usually what it is, now they can probably adjust the financial aid but just the thought of having to wonder every year if D will get the appropriate amount of financial aid, knowing that tuition will increase every year and having to appeal year after year is not worth it for us. We have put Fordham on the back burner until after RD and then we will probably politely decline.
