Frigid Cold and Unusual Snow

12 here in northeast NJ with about 5” of snow? H and son shoveled yesterday, I stayed inside.

All the suns make the picture seem so much happier than it really is!

It’s 2 degrees here and no school today or tomorrow, but still much warmer than where we lived until 2022. In 2019 my car told me this on a sunny morning when I got to work (and I don’t think car thermometers do windchills):

It was -19 deg F when I woke up this morning, measured at the weather station a mile from our house.

People not from here sometimes ask about wind chill, but most of us don’t factor that in because who would ever go outside naked?

It’s in the low 20s now at 10 AM. I have to go to a funeral in a few hours, but I will skip the graveside service. It’s just too cold.

Cold with deep snow at the cabin (ME):

But we have a frost warning here in AZ, and our golf course has issued a two-hour frost delay this morning:

This is from south Texas. Kids are having snowball fights in my neighborhood.

We just went through the same thing over the weekend in Utah. The average temperature was 15 degrees with heavy snowfall. They cancelled the graveside services for our funeral. Funny though, after I got back, I discovered Texas isn’t much warmer.

You’ll be surprised :joy:

Also saw it was minus digits in my old home town. Nice to remember why I pushed for 10 years to move here!

-6, feels like -14 according to my phone but it’s sunny and the ground is dry so my dog and I walked a fast mile. Honestly if you wear the right clothes it’s very invigorating and peaceful out. But I’ve here all my life.

I’m sorry everybody’s having to deal with the cold. I am also in SoCal but I was also 2 miles from a new fire that started and we were given orders to evacuate. Yes we’re going through Santa Ana winds down here and they have not let up since the fires in Pacific Palisades.

My husband was at work and people had to tell him.

Fortunately, or really unfortunately, in my area we have suffered through major fire losses, so our county is now prepared. They had fixed wing tankers and helicopters douse the fire that started 2 miles northwest of us.
Another very good thing that came out of it is that we had a small circle of Neighbors on a text chain, and because a lot of the neighbors came outside to ask about the evacuation orders, they all asked to be included in the chain.

Also, we were given an app that gives updates on evacuation orders. Our neighbors, three houses down, are all firefighters for Cal fire so they were keeping us posted with the Fire.

I just had a major surgery so I had to adjust our evacuation plan. Not fun when you’re planning for everything to burn in your house.

While frigid cold and snow can certainly be dangerous, our actions can be much more controlled than those in state of fire.

Those going through fire status are in much more dire situations- no intent to diminish that with this thread!

My son in NOLA has been sending pictures all morning of the kids in the snow. They announced school closings on Friday for today and tomorrow. My DIL started hunting down boots and pants for the kids; friends and Amazon to the rescue!

In metro Atlanta, where schools were announced to be closed today as of 6:00 last night, we have not seen a drop of snow. One of the cities mayors post this on social media, which gave me a chuckle: “According to the National Weather Service it has been snowing in Sandy Springs since 7:30 am. If your house it like mine, it is invisible snow. We can’t get a straight answer from NWS about what to expect, but the air apparently is so dry precipitation isn’t falling.”

-15 this morning without windchill. Right now around noon, looks like it’s -5 with a -13 windchill. Typical for this week in January. There always seems to be a frigid week in the 3rd or 4th week of January. But odd winter with very little snow, no snow on the ground at all now. We usually have had more by now. Midwest/Great Lakes state.

I’m in Atlanta. No snow right now, but in the “blizzard of ‘93” when I was young and dumb we hitched a waterski rope to a pickup truck and geared up for snow skiing down Peachtree Steet in Buckhead. Thankfully my friends and I all had snow skis and gear, but I saw another goofball try it with water skis.:flushed: Fun memories, nonetheless.

Enjoy the snow skiing, NOLA and all Southern areas getting this unusual winter weather!

Back in the old days we would go skid hopping on the back bumpers of unsuspecting cars.
