Frigid Cold and Unusual Snow

LOL - we used to joke about that when we bundled up the little ones for snow play. On a more serious note, we did have an elderly friend who fell in his backyard driveway and could not get up in his bulky parka. Luckily his neighbor found him. He got a cellphone after that.

@abasket - Beautiful photo! It makes me smile seeing what a pretty setting you found via diligent househunting.

It was -16 (real temperature) here at 4 am. We’ve had as cold as -28, but last year we didn’t get below zero one time.

It’s currently 26 degrees (feels like 17) here in my part of Minnesota. I saw something telling us not to wear shorts today , but I bet at least a few people will.

My friend sent me a pic of her place in Myrtle Beach, covered in snow. Apparently they got 5 inches.

My son who hates the cold moved to Tallahassee for grad school and didn’t bring his winter jacket with him because Florida!! (I don’t think he realized Florida is a long state). I’m guessing today was at least a 3 hoodie day for him, if he even went outside.

Beautiful! Every few years, the river near us (which is brackish) actually freezes and the local ice boaters come out. It is really quite a sight to see them fly across the surface.

Our lake is frozen solid and the ice fishermen are having a great time. First time in several years the lake has frozen!

My daughter’s boyfriend goes to school in Tampa, he’s from Long Island, my daughter is in Boston. He leaves coats and such in LI and Boston, sometimes he will leave one here in NJ. Hope he is warm.

Today in southern Louisiana we made a snowman, reliving the days of Snowmen at Night, a childhood fave.

I was stunned when someone shared this with me:

In an unexpected twist during the winter whiplash, metro New Orleans has received more snowfall since the start of meteorological winter than many cold-weather cities across the country, including Philadelphia, New York and Anchorage, Alaska.

I got a chuckle from this one shared on the service academy forum:

It’s a balmy 19 degrees this morning. This is getting ridiculous.

Heat wave here…it’s 11

Houses up north have better insulation/preparation for this kind of weather. Where I live it’s been below freezing pretty consistently for 4 days or so. There are going to be a lot of burst pipes when the temps warm up and the water in the pipes unfreeze :frowning:

Yup. I’ve been dripping my pipes in the two most exposed rooms if/when the lows get 20 or below for more than 6 hours.

People tell me that I shouldn’t have to worry. Our basement isn’t heated, but the boiler puts off a lot of heat. Still, the kitchen and H’s bathroom - the sink is just so cold. The kitchen doesn’t have a heat source. At least with the new boiler the space heater says it’s 54* in there. (I run it toward the open cabinets for an hour before bed and in the morning) Thermostat is at 65*, so that’s not too terrible. Our old boiler I remember it getting down to 45*.

I’m just so paranoid. Our emergency shut off is in the inconvenient location. Our basement is dirt and 3 rooms are full depth, but the rest is more like a crawl space. Of course, it’s in that area all the way to the front of the house. Blech.

Last week I had a plumber wrap the most exposed pipes down there. Hopefully that will help too.

We were at 13* this morning. Had another fantastic run! Except for worrying about the pipes, I do love this weather for us.

D1 was driving home from a Target run yesterday when she drove past a young teenaged boy (9th grade-ish) walking down the street with no jacket or hat, in just a short sleeve T-shirt and jeans. His face and arms were completely red, and he was all hunched up. It was 11 degrees. She circled the block and pulled up beside him, rolled down her window to ask if he had a warm, safe place he could shelter. He looked at her like she was a crazy lady, shrugged and kept walking. She hoped he was just walking home from the bus stop and that he had way to get into his house.

But seriously…11 degrees in just a T-shirt! What was he thinking?

She’s been treating her homeless patients all week for hypothermia and frostbite. Some of them are going to lose fingers and toes because of this cold snap. No one should be outside in this weather without warm clothing.
