Oh you’re so lucky! I just want to know that I got in somewhere. It would be a weight off my shoulders
@Anduar3 I hope you get in somewhere soon!
@dancingwriter Congrats! I believe Fordham had a massive problem releasing its admission decision last year. Great news anyway
@amtc I did my Knox interview, and I thought it went really well. Yay! At the very least, I had fun speaking with the interviewer.
So anyway… what’s new with you all? This thread has been kind of quiet recently…
Nothing much on my end. Just got contacted for my first interview, so I’m preparing for that. Still waiting anxiously for my early decisions
I am just waiting until the mid-December! :-"
@Anduar3 Ooh! Which college is it?
I’m also waiting as patiently as I can for mid-December. I swear, time is messing with me right now. It’s moving much MUCH slower than usual.
@dancingwriter lol right! The days are shorter but the time has never been slower
The interview is for Brown, my number one school; my dream school…so no pressure right #:-S
Sent in my Vassar app, just waiting now… I have yet to get an interview request. I auditioned for a Shakespeare play at an amazing youth theatre company and actually got a callback, which is tonight - I’m an acting n00b (I’m an experienced stage manager, but I hardly have any acting experience), so I don’t expect to get a part, but I’m happy to have gotten a callback
Just relax and all will be well
Well my interviewer sounded really nice and bubbly and she stressed how informal it’s going to be so I guess relaxing would be a good thing.
@LAMuniv that’s really awesome! I have a few actor friends here so I know how much just getting a callback can mean. They saw something in you, so best of luck tonight!
Yea I did over 10 college interviews past year and present college cycle. Only one interviewer was rigidly formal, and all others were… humans with emotions. :))
@Anduar3 Oh wow! Good luck! I did a Brown interview last year, but I was really unlucky with my interviewer. He was a lawyer and super formal about everything. I just couldn’t relax. It’s good to hear that your interviewer is super bubbly and nice.
@LAMuniv Wow! Congrats on the callback! That’s awesome xD
@viphan Totally I’ve only done four interviews so far and all of them were informal except for one.
Hey Guys! Good to see there’s a separate discussion forum for Gap year-ers. I need some help, but I guess I should start off by giving a little introduction of myself:
I am an international student taking a gap year (hence the reason for being here.) I applied to a few US colleges last year and got into two of them: Georgia Tech and American University at Paris. Unfortunately, because of the lack of any financial aid, I couldn’t attend any of these Unis. (AUP did offer me a scholarship, but I don’t know I…I just didn’t want to go there for some reason ) Any ways, I decided that I should apply to the universities in my home country. I waned to do medicine and for this I had to take a specific entry test. Through that entry test, which is called the MCAT (not the US one obviously), I could apply to all the medical colleges in my province. I also took another entry test of a very prestigious medical school, which was outside of my province. I passed this test and got short-listed for the interview. While I waited for my interview date, I prepared for the MCAT. However, around three weeks before the test I caught Jaundice and…well…as you can guess, my MCAT got screwed up. However, luckily, I was able to recover before the interview for the other university. The interview went pretty well and I eagerly waited for the decision to be announced. However, I was devastated to receive a rejection letter.
So, I consulted with a few teacher, friends and ofcourse, my family members and decided to take a gap year and to reapply to US. However, I could not apply ED because of how late I received the admission decision. The admission process for medicine in my country starts very late: tests and interviews happen in the summer and continue till September and even, (in some cases) till October. So, by the time I received my admission, I had only one and a half week left till the ED deadline for most Unis.
So now that you know this much about me, let me tell you what I have done in the gap year so far. I guess the most time consuming activity was managing my own NGO. It was an NGO I started back in February with a friend of mine, but due to the final exams ( I was an A levels student, and so my final exams, or “CIEs” as they’re mostly called, were of great importance.) we could not keep it very much active. So after the exams, throughout the summer and uptill now, we have been working on various projects. Besides that I read a few books and volunteered for other NGOs.
Currently, I am preparing for my SAT which is due in 2 weeks, i.e. on December the 6th. However, I am very clueless as to where I should apply. Last year, my list was very hastily and superficially researched. This year though, I want to make sure that I have a sensible, well thought out list. Can you guys help me with that? I’ll post some of my academic and co-curricular records, along with my interests so you guys can guide me. I apologise for making this post too long , but I wanted you guys to fully understand my situation. I would be extremely thankful if you read all of it.
Academics: I was an O levels and A levels student. Basically, O levels and A levels are examination system that are organised by CIE (Cambridge International Examinations) UK. O levels is equivalent to 9th and 10th grade while A levels is equivalent to 11th and 12th. You study their syllabus for two years (Generally, I mean. Technically, there is nor limit. You just study the syllabus and take the exam whenever it fits you.) and then at the end you take the official CIE exam, prepared, organised and marked by the examiners of University of Cambridge. In O levels I studied 10 subjects and my grades were 9A* (that’s kind of like an A+) and 1A. In A levels, I studied 5 subjects and my grades were 3A* and 2As. Apart from that, my internal grades or the high school transcripts were ok-ish. There are occasional Bs, but mostly there are As.
SAT: 2100 (I took it in november 2013. I am taking it again, as I mentioned before. Hopefully I’ll be able to raise it above 2200) CR: 670, Maths: 760, Writing: 670
SAT 2: (2 subjects) 1500. 730 chem, 770 maths 2
Academic interests: My subjects in A levels were Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and History. So, although I am mostly a science guy, I have interests in social sciences as well.
E.Cs: Volunteer Work, Science Projects/Competitions, Theatre (I mostly directed the technicals of the play but acted a few times as well). These are the major ones; apart from these, I’ve participated in sports and written for my school magazine.)
I would be very grateful if you guys could help me decide a sensible college list. I am looking for those kind of Unis which are generous when it comes to internationals.
@Marstatic Try posting this question on the International Students section of this site. There are plenty of similar threads and a few stickied posts you might find useful.
Yay…my friends are back from college for Thanksgiving.
Mine’s coming around Tuesday haha
Lucky! My friends aren’t coming back until the summer haha #internationalstudentprobs
Mine are mostly all home too, but there’s freshly fallen snow and we’re being told not to drive (I went to a private day school, so most of my friends live 45 minutes away rather than being in the same town)
