Why so spiteful? Life goes on (and i say this with a heck of a lot of experiences)… gms shouldn’t be the only deciding factor for success in our young lives… if that’s how you thought of it …then you obviously need to grow some more character.

Hi. I have a student who I think got the right thing to be a scholar, but I want to make sure. She said she got a huge envelope with papers and a certificate saying she is a GMS Scholar. DOes this sound right to those of you who got it? Oh, and that she is supposed to send in some paperwork to determine how much she qualifies for. EEKS!!

I’m just nervous for her. She really needed it.

the ups guy had delivered it to the wrong house!!! luckily my mom was pulling up to our house when she saw the guy deliver 4 houses down! she was curious and decided to go ask about my package and turns out he had just dropped it off at the doorstep of another house! i was at work when she called me!! im sooo happyyy!!! btw…im hispanic from texas.

goodluck to all those that are still waiting :)

I know that the gates millenium scholar is both merit and need-based, in the sense that just being named finalist was merit-based (finalist = top 10% of 20k+ applicants = NOT BAD AT ALL!!!) but I’m thinking that it really is based on need, but not in the same way private colleges that offer to meet 100% need calculate how much aid a student needs). I bet the majority of the students who got the scholarships are going to non-ivies/colleges that dont guaranteed 100% need. I noticed that the majority of students on the gates profiles went to state schools so…can i conclude that the scholarship is geared towards students who wouldnt get that much aid from their colleges?

No letter in the mail or UPS for me. I’m still keeping the faith and patience. Congrats again to those who found out today.

On the subject of need I completely disagree with FAFSA calculations and Gates Millenium going along with FAFSA to determine student need.

One of my friends last year with a great transcript and very active in school/community got like only 3k in scholarships from the school when the yearly tuition is 50K+. Then no pell grant because EFC was around 11000. They are not rich and their family like mine had to start from scratch when they emigrated to the US 5yrs ago and what sucks even more is there were no big scholarship he could apply for since he’s really not a minority by skin color but we both come from Africa. My parents are still paying loans for the education they have received for the few years we’ve been in the US.

My situation is pretty similar to my friend’s other than he went to middlebury and I’m going to NYU, and I’m getting the pell grant. NYU tuition will be terrible w/o a scholarship since I only have like 6k in yearly scholarships so tuition will still be like 50k.

That sounds about correct! It’s not that students who are going to ivy or private college don’t get it (I know a couple who have gotten it even though they were going to a higher ranked college), but it’s safe to say that Gates is definetely aimed more toward need base in the finalist rounds (not that I’m saying it’s ALL need based! Gates scholars are also very smart and very well rounded, they deserve it!). I’m starting to suspect that maybe a factor of the reason why I didn’t get it was based on the fact that I was accepted into JHU and JHU is very generous with their aid. Once again, I hope this isn’t taken the wrong way! No dissing on the people who got it this year!

Jfbycc: very true. GMS is NOT the end of the road. Whatever you do, DON’T stop trying. Yes, life goes on. Why the heck am I still on this forum then? lol. I just want to see more people be happy.

NYU! Hey! That’s kind of close to JHU. It’s only a couple of hours ride from New York to Baltimore. =) Very impressive and beautiful campus. Congrats anorexic and Blakc!

to tha hater you i didnt talk about being poor or anything like that they see who are the leaders and who arent and your nasty attitude must have come through thats why they didnt pick you be happy you were a finalist

I just picked up my acceptance package two hours ago. I in the airport waiting to check out Barnard, and it has changed my entire experience. My mom cried so much…

Congratulations to everybody! This is so much better than getting into college! Even though thats a requirement :)

Who are the Scholars that will be in New York? Any at Barnard College, I mgih be the only one…

I’m seriously put off by the spiteful nature of the foruims lately. Making excuses as to why you did not get it is just that excuses. At the end of the day you were participating a scholarship that is more selective than harvard university as far as probability is concerned. Why not be happy for your fellow comrade. Who are you to say you are more qualified tahn the next person, sometimes what’s on paper is very different from who you truly are. As far as the financial aid comments, i know people who did not get the scholarship who had an EFC of 0. so please spare me. IF your so great than why do you need to stand on the shoulders of Gates to reach new heights. This is absolutely ridiculous. Take a breather and learn how to deal with failure. You learn from failure, and build on success. that’s the motto. Those of you that did not win and are not spiteful you are to be commended. No one deserved to not get the scholarship, but since there is a limit a choice must be made. Celebrate life. you are better off than 3/5th of the world’s population. How many kids are international and couldn’t apply but yet there resumes are through the roof. How about the girl i know who did not win because her nominator forgot to nominate her. What do you say to that. Talking about religion, there’s a famous quote from the bible that fits this circumstance. Ecclesiastes 9: 11: "I returned to see under the sun that the swift do not have the race, nor the mighty ones the battle, nor do the wise also have the food, nor do the understanding ones also have the riches, nor do even those having knowledge have the favor; because time and unforeseen occurrence befall them all.
"

OK, OK, I dont know if the above comments (by raidergurl) were aimed at me, but i did not mean to sound spiteful or anything. I was just asking a question based on the limited observations I made from reading the gates millenium website. I knew, even before doing the scholarship app, that I did not NEED Gates. I have an ECF of zero and have gotten full financial aid, except for the student contribution, which is the reason I WANTED gates. I have no reason to be spiteful or jealous of anyone who got the honor of being named scholar b/c i did not NEED it…I was just wondering if the people who really needed it for their chosen college, got it, and if so, that would have made more sense. Congrats guys and good luck next year! :)

Vicky_sky is very right. We (if you are also talking about us) were not trying to attack anyone. Vicky was making a very simple observation. I know that there are many who have an EFC of 0 who didn’t make it in (finalist OR scholar). Alltimerwendy, what you have to understand is that we’re genuinely happy for those who made it in and a bit sad for those who didn’t make it in. Yes, it is life. No matter what, Gates is just a stepping stone. GMS cannot possibly accept everyone they want to and sometimes it’s a hard decision. It doesn’t make you a better person if you got it but it also doesn’t make you a failure if you didn’t get it. And EVERYONE, please keep that in mind. You are not failures. Geesh. Err… question. Am I sending the wrong message here or are people reading my comments differently? If I sound ‘spiteful’, I do not intend to! I truly am happy for all the recipients and seriously, congrats everyone!

I just realized that some of my comments about aid could’ve been taken wrongly! Sorry if it was taken the wrong way! I didn’t mean it to be. What I was trying to say was, yes, Gates Scholarship does contain a component about EFC, it is most likely taken into consideration but I’M NOT SAYING that all Gates Scholars got it because they were poor or needed it more. TOTALLY not my message. I have a very smart friend who didn’t really need it but received it because they thought it was deserved. Aid MIGHT be a component, but NOT for everyone. Once again I’m sorry if it was taken the wrong way! I’ve had a long day. -sigh- I apologize for any misunderstandings!

Quote alltimerwendy: “Those of you that did not win and are not spiteful you are to be commended. No one deserved to not get the scholarship, but since there is a limit a choice must be made.” <— I agree 100%

Raider girl was talking to me, so I think I have the right to rebuttle at her comment. Where are you going next year? I only ask because you have communicated through your posts that you are a complete idiot so I don’t know what school would consider asking you. I am not dissing anyone who got it all power to them I just don’t think they all deserved to get them.
