gms will not pay for laptops but it covers computer related expenses. the definition of related has changed but still the same. some colleges factor computer related expenses in their COA so you’ll be straight. if the university doesn’t then taht’s a different story. even on the financial aid form you have to send to gates, there’s a place for computer related expenses. also, they pay for off-campus housing.

yeha I am pretty sure they payf or off campus housing, and the representative from Gates that went to my school told me that they do cover computer and laptop purchases.

I’m sure they covered computer/laptop purchases prior to this year. The form for the financial aid officer for the upcoming year, however, states that they will no longer cover such expenses (effective immediately).

I didn’t receive the scholarship but I knew well in advance that I wouldn’t. While I thought I would be Pell Grant Eligible in December, my FAFSA efc was high (about 9000) and I wasn’t eligible for Pell.

I’m just really lucky that I pretty much received a full ride from an awesome school. If not, I would have been ectremely upset about not receiving GMS.

Congrats to all of you!

I received my package Thursday morning right when I was about to leave to UCLA admit weekend! Official Bruin… c/o 13!

quick question.
do they factor other scholarships received into the gates award amount, or do they just simply go off of what is written on our financial aid award letter?

WOO HOO Gates Millennium Scholar for the Class of 2009! I got my package this past Friday. This past Saturday was prom and me and the Prom King both were awarded the scholarship. Cool thing is three applied from my school and two got it!! YAAAY LOL. I am an official Lady Hardrocker for the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

The Gates also factors in scholarships. I received an academic scholarship from the School of Mines (as did the other Gates Scholar) and they were both 5,000. That covers my room and board but Gates will pay my tuition…or something like that. I haven’t spoken with my FO yet.

I’m Native American from the wonderful, beautiful Rosebud Sioux Tribe on the Rosebud Reservation.

I was working on my Gates Scholarship since I was a freshman. My essays really. They changed over the past years but I was able to submit my app in August when it first opened. My nominator and my recommender got their things in in October. I just had a long waiting process!!

FO’s will include computer expenses in the letters but Gates will not cover the expenses.

My semi-finalist letter was dated March 9 and I received it on March 11. On March 13 they had a Gates workshop for the juniors at my school (Todd County High School) and I was able to submit my Tribal Eligibility Certificate, GPA sheet, SAR, Admissions Letter, School Profile and Transcript in that same day. They all had to be in by April 8. My Gates package was dated for April 15 and I received it on April 17. I submitted that final letter thing this morning.

Schools don’t have a specific amount to nominate Gates Scholars. My school has nominated close to ten. My freshman year (06) there were two scholars and they were also the only semi-finalists. My sophomore year (07) there were about ten nominated (they base the nominations on GPA (3.3 or above)) and two semi-finalists who were also the only two scholars. Last year they nominated fifteen. Four semi-finalists and two scholars. Red Cloud High School has a record number. The highest amount is eight for 2008. I think like six for 06 and seven for 07. LOL. I think following this pattern they might have nine scholars. My school has had only two scholars every year (sadly) but they do have firsts. Our first two where the first for my school but the second and third from my tribe. This year I’m the eighth from my Tribe and Noah is the first African American from my school to receive the scholarship. I’m also the first on my block to get it. In 2007 Sierra Bordeaux got it. She’s from Rosebud too (my hometown) but she’s from Low Rent Rosebud and I’m from Fairgrounds Rosebud. LOL. We share that. I have her in my college class as well. I didn’t tell her I got it yet but I have class today at 1 with her and I’m going to tell her then. I’m very proud of the Scholars TCHS has produced.

Being gay will not hurt you. I in fact wrote one of my essays about how I have many gay friends and am respected by both straights and gays because I treat them equally. I wrote how I am active in promoting LGBT rights and am first to take stand against anyone treating them weird. In fact in my culture a gay guy is sacred because they can carry the pipe and heal. They can perform both male and female roles. I put that in too.

I just got my delightful rejection letter.

I kinda saw it coming, when I didn’t get a package last week. I hate FAFSA, My EFC is 10982 something like that anyways NO PELL GRANT :(, IDK how they calculate that but my parent’s don’t make that much money, Like 70k for a household of 6 people. God has provided a steady life for us so I can’t complain. My rejection might be a blessing to another family who has been having a rough time or whose parent’s are laid off.

It was a good experience though, I don’t regret writing the essays or following up on this posts/forums.

I’m just a wee-bit concerned about how I’m going to afford my education.

NYU= worst financial aid provider in the planet but God will come through.
