So GT is extending the deposit deadline date for in state but not OOS? What the heck?

If you can afford OOS to begin with then FA is not a problem.

As a family in this situation and needing to compare all aspects of options - including financial apples to apples - I completely disagree with that statement. I tried to do a search on any other schools that are treating in and out of state students differently with deposit dates, I might’ve done the search incorrectly, but I don’t see any other schools doing this. Just because the school can doesn’t mean that they should if they’re putting the welfare of students first. Which is what most schools say that they do.

Both Berkeley and UGA have extended commitment deadline to May 15 for in state students only. Likely others as well but those are the ones I am aware of.

I don’t think Georgia Tech offers much in the way of need based aid unless you qualify for the Pell Grant.

Exactly! It absolutely doesn’t matter what your FAFSA says if you are OOS. Unless it is Pell or loan or possibly Federal Workstudy (I think it capped at about 2k per year), you are going to get nothing. So there is nothing to compare or to wait for. Majority of OOS students are full pay by design (unless very few with merit.) I am not sure are there Pell OOS students, since Pell will not cover OOS tuition.

Just feel good messaging - these are businesses. They’re going to optimize their portfolio.

That was also the explanation on the UGA admissions blog comments when asked. Basically if you don’t get merit and are OOS any aid will be largely loans so FASFA doesn’t typically change things.

Anyone got info on provost yet? Has anyone received it? Expected date of release?

Agree, DS24 OOS did not get any financial aid from GT while MIT was very generous. He loves GT and MIT both but we would be choosing MIT due to the financial aid.

I didn’t know much about GT, but was really impressed when I visited. Hard to turn down MIT though even if it’s a less cohesive community.

This should not surprise you. GaTech is a public school financed by state and state’s taxes. MIT is private.

My nephew committed to GT. He’s really excited. They said admitted student day was great and campus feel was great.

My son is at GT and while it certainly has some issues (just like everywhere else), he has enjoyed his years there so far!

You are exactly correct. OOS students who are waiting for financial aid awards (which never came by the OOS decision deadline, btw) are absolutely screwed in the housing lottery. It’s absolute insanity to make it FCFS when 70% of the students found out about admission six weeks before the rest of the OOS students.

It’s literally the only school that does this. OOS students are only seen as cash-cows at GT. I honestly wish my DD24 hadn’t fallen in love with the school and her program. They’re screwed with admission (MUCH higher bar for admission-- especially into the engineering college), their screwed with merit scholarships (none), they’re screwed with need-based aid (none) and they’re screwed in the housing lottery. All while paying $52,000/year. It’s absolute insanity and 100% a business model. But a screwed up one in which the customer paying the most, gets the worst service. At least at Ivy’s and elite private schools, the playing field is level in terms of treatment when you’re full-pay.

Nobody is screwed in the housing Lottery as a freshman at Georgia Tech. All dorms are essentially equal. Glenn and Towers on East campus are arguably slightly nicer, but not by much if at all. Towers and Glenn both still have carpet everywhere, while many of the other dorms have been upgraded with luxury vinyl plank floors. Some would argue that all of the dorms on West campus are better than those two because they are bigger (by quite a bit). We have personal experience with both Towers and Hopkins on East and they are basically the same.

The only people that get Glenn and Towers are people that sign up before noon the day housing opens. That is a very small percentage of students because to sign up you have to commit and pay hundreds of dollars in deposit. My guess is the people that signed up housing immediately (even when OOS sign up was on the same day) are almost exclusively in state people who know they are going to Georgia Tech, are going to get free tuition, and are not waiting for any financial aid.

As far of as out-of-state financial aid goes, there is almost none except for the handful of merit awards. The institutional priority is to direct financial aid funds to first generation students. I believe some also goes to Pell Grant eligible applicants, but financial aid is not generous. If you don’t qualify for the Pell Grant, it is highly unlikely you will receive aid from what I understand
