Hi, all–Mom (S23) here

I’m here mostly for emotional support during this interminable wait for December. My D23 is at UGA, but I don’t think I knew enough to be truly nervous for her the first time around. :joy: She also didn’t have a dream school, which that made things easier.

@Parent-in-Georgia – perhaps we can go through this together because it seems like we are in similar situations

Anyway…he’s in-state and attends a large public school in the city of Atlanta. His school typically has a 45-50% acceptance rate. Last year was 47% (~45 students…I know at least of 2 of them were CS, but there may have been more).

Academics

  • GPA
    • District: UW - 95.08, W - 100.08
    • Quality Points Conversion: UW 3.96, W 4.46
    • School district only weights AP, IB, DE (not honors)
  • Rank
    • 32/~600
  • ACT: 35

Coursework

  • Rigor: 20 classes (8 STEM, 8 HUMS, 4 Other) through senior year
    • 13 IB (IBDP candidate)
    • 7 AP (Human Geography, World History, Physics, CSP, CSA, Calc AB, Calc BC)

ECs:

  • 4 years HS soccer (large, competitive, successful program))
  • 4 years club soccer (tournament MVP in 9th, captain in 12th )
  • 4 years volunteering with local organization that provides food to under-resourced students in local district
    • 2 years in leadership position beginning as a junior, chosen by board of directors, 1 of only 4 in class of 2025
    • Helped troubleshoot volunteer management system
  • Developed iOS app for IBMYP project
  • 2 years Robotics Team (coder)
  • Software Engineering Internship (
  • Summer Scholars program in video game design, taught by computer science faculty at a public university
  • Summer Camp: 10-year camper, 1-year volunteer CIT

Awards:

  • Georgia Certificate of Merit
  • AP Scholar & Scholar with Distinction
  • NHS
  • 3-year Principal’s List (full academic year GPA 94+)

Essays are pretty strong (several people reviewed them and liked them, spent a lot of time on the Tech supplemental)

Recs

  • IB History Teacher & IB Physics Teacher - should both be strong
    • Physics teacher is also robotics club advisor
    • History teacher was his IB extended essay advisor junior year
  • Counselor rec will probably be meh/adequate. He’s the only one for 600 students, so I can’t blame him.
  • Has one other from an employer that should be pretty good (she knows him well and thinks the world of him)

Overall, I think he’s a strong candidate, but he’s applying for CS. He is also legacy & attends an APS school, but I don’t think he would accept a non-CS pathway offer. He would prefer to do CS somewhere else.

So I wait and worry and would love some company for the ride.

GPAs are evaluated in context of the applicant’s school, not across schools or regions or total institutional average (which we have no idea how it’s calculated…Tech does not recalculate GPAs in the admission process.)

Yes, we are in the same boat! Good luck to both our kids  :crossed_fingers:
CS is a competitive major so we can only hope for the best.

That data is not county data. It is high school specific and contains all public and private high schools in Georgia. While not perfect - Naviance gives more details as to gender and year - it gives a decent estimate. It does cover 5 years of data so it is likely a little lower than current year successful admits as admission has gotten more competitive than it was 5 years ago.

Just wondering, after seeing that CS is a very competitive major to apply to. My D25 submitted her app and have applied to Computational Media. Is this just as competitive or a little less so (fingers crossed)? Thanks.

CS is the only major that students directly apply to. Students who identify other majors in their app can change their major to any other major (with the exception of CS.)

Georgia Tech says you can submit ACT scores through the common app or the portal after application submission. Does anyone know if the portal submission asks for highest composite like the common app does or just highest in each section? In our situation the highest composite is lower than the superscore by several points and would rather just submit highest of each section.

As per my daughter, Yes, they do have a place where you can add multiple test scores including composite score

You enter multiple test dates and scores for each date. I think they calculate the superscore for you, but do confirm.

I know Georgia Tech does not admit by major, but then again, don’t they have to consider? They can’t have an entire class of Comp Sci majors. How does it work? Do they evaluate in the context of your Why GT essay?

I think GaTech does admit by major.

Ga Tech does not admit by major, with the exception of CS.

When you apply to Georgia Tech as a first-year applicant, you do not apply to a specific major or college. However, on your Common Application, you can select an intended (primary) major and additional major of interest (secondary)

That’s not saying they don’t pay attention to major in the admission process. One can look in IPEDS or CDS to see how many students graduate by major in any given year.

Guys, apart from the admission portal access does student need to have a GT account setup too? My daughter hasn’t gotten anything on this, can someone confirm if GT account and admission portal access are 2 different things. She submitted application about 15 days ago and got access to admission portal right away

Nevermind, she got the GT account link within admission portal now

Just received the notification that financial aid application is available. Is this a positive sign?

Received too, but don’t think it really means anything as it’s a bit too early. We are OOS, the EA(II) deadline has not passed yet.

received email about financial aid as well…think its too early for admission process to complete

When should we expect the result for OOS/EA2? The wait has started…

Good luck to everyone!
