Girls: Do You Watch It?

The reviews/recaps of this episode (and especially the comments) are fascinating. The show and the characters have more layers than we were lead to believe in season one. At this point in season two at least we can all agree that this is not just “Sex and the City” for a new generation.

I watched Lena’s blurb after the show on On Demand tonight and was shocked that she didn’t really address how truly dark and disturbing it was. She talked about Adam’s issue some, but she didn’t talk about Hannah’s problem. The season finale is next week already.

I never saw Sex & the City.( don’t have cable)& not a big fan of Sarah Jessica.
Haven’t seen Girls either, although I have been looking for a new show to watch since Doc Martin/Sherlock/ Downton are on hiatus & 30rock is over!

It sounds interesting, but I admit I lean toward lighter entertainment, I have enough hard to watch documentaries that D recommends. ( they arent all hard to watch though, “Jiro dreams of sushi”, didn’t have any abused children/poisoned water supply/endangered polar bears or homeless families)

I don’t know why others have liked Adam so much until this the recent episode. I have never liked him. Did he do that to get rid of his new girlfriend?

When Shoshanna has that bun on her head, I forget to listen to what she is saying.

Is there any significance to Shoshanna’s name includes “hanna”?

emerald I would not call Girls lighter entertainment…Sex in the City was light but for me Girls is more thought provoking. I don’t think Girls is dark, but it is for me a mesmerizing depiction of all the turmoil that happens to young women in their early twenties while figuring out who they are going to be, what kind of relationships they want/envision with men. I found it startlingly unchanged from situations and friends from my early twenties in the late seventies. I found the exploration of Adam dating the stereotypical sweetheart girl really interesting juxtapositioned with the Adam and Hannah’s relationship. Hannah’s dependence on her parents is probably more indicative of what happens today compared to the seventies so that makes the show interesting. I also think the casting is exceptional.

Adam relapsed and likely treated his new girlfriend as he did out of self-loathing. I certainly didn’t approve of what he did, but I was very sad for him - spinning out of control and trying to control at the same time. Perhaps he quit drinking because he scared himself when he drank. She was also controlling, sexually, in her own way, so in his compromised state, he may have been pushing back.

razor - I hate Shoshanna’s bun too and I can’t believe anyone can talk to her without staring at it, aghast.

^^I agree with your last sentence…she played a part in that whole scene also with her “demands” but not strong enough to get off the floor and say she didn’t want to play the game. They were ultimately both playing a game.

I like Adam and his weirdness. I can’t explain him or his actions but I always sort of liked him and didn’t understand why Hanna turned so quickly against/away from him. Was I missing something?

But before she called the cops. She would look for him in the beginning and clearly liked him even though he didn’t care for her. I don’t know, maybe I watched all the episodes too fast so I might have missed something but after he wanted to move in with her, she completely changed her mind. I liked Adam more as time went by because I couldn’t see what was appealing to him at first.

Everything was going “fine” (AKA Hanna seemed happy with their relationship) until he wanted to move in.

Waiting for the season on DVD!

In the beginning, perhaps. But it’s clear from Adam’s speech at the AA meeting that she means much more to him than that now, and I think the same is true for Hannah.

I agree with Booklady.

Good lord…Marnie is simply awful! Run, Charlie, run!

Oh, I am a hopeless romantic. I cried through the last five minutes of the episode. Adam was the selfless friend, and everyone else was so wound up in their own narcicistic world they couldn’t hear or be bothered with Hannah’s cries for help.

I puddled, too.

And,I agree, run Charlie, run!

“I was always here.” Oooof! That line belongs right up there with “You had me at ‘hello’”. I’m verklempt.

That was amazing.

Not a fan from the two short clips I saw so wont watch.
