I’m trying to add some new songs to my running/gym playlist. Anyone have any favorites? I won’t embarrass myself by listing all my songs, but just fyi the best running song I know is “Hey Ya” by Outkast–perfect for my pace (8:30). But I can’t play it ten times over…

Y.M.C.A. is perfect for certain reps. Somehow, that song seems to have lasted forever. But would get irritating if played more than once per month.

Ok, Here’s my current Ipod workout playlist (subject to change):

Beatles: Good Day Sunshine
Rolling Stones: Honky Tonk Women
Led Zeppelin:Black Dog

audiophile- I have a lot of those same songs on my list! Another good one is “Roll to me” by Del Amitri. Anything by the Go-Go’s gets me going, too.

Blondie: Call Me

Audio-
You have The Move’s version of “Do Ya” on your Ipod? I am totally impressed, but not surprised…you were a Kweder fan, after all. It’s much better than that overprocessed ELO version. The Move’s raw, spare production allows all that beautiful cowbell to come through…and we all need more cowbell.

Although the tempo is variable so it may not be appropriate for aerobics or something like that, for running to get into shape, the theme from “Rocky” is kind of fun if you liked the movie.

driver,

Not only do I have the Move’s version, but I have a version done by Matthew Sweet live on the Conan O’Brien show. It kicks butt!

Shock and awe. I love Matthew Sweet, and particularly love the old Lou Reed guitarists who played on his first album. Is the Conan version available online? I must have it.

Depends on your choice of music. I love nothing but hard rock (and classical, But u cant exercise to classical, LOL). And If you’re my type and want an adrenaline-rushed workout, u might wanna listen to hard rock. Cant give u a concrete list. It’d be too long (I’ve got 1700 rock songs on my ipod that i keep listening to). So my advice - metal

Driver,

The first Matthew Sweet album is solid beginning to end. His most recent stuff is also interesting.

Lesson I learned from my sister; my gym play list has a long songs mostly from the 80’s/90’s where if I get through 4 songs it is about 40 to 45 minutes. Psychologically it makes the workout go faster because in your head your are saying one more song (who said that disco does not have its place) . The music has a fast enough tempo to keep up your pace. One of my play list has music my the orginal salsoul classics (my love is free-double exposure, love thang- first choice, hit and run-loleatta holloway) cocomotion- el coco, love is the message -msfb(by try to get the larry levan remix), you know how to love me -phyllis hyman, fantastic voyage- lakeside, i like (what you’re doing to me) -young and company, the men all paused- klymaxx, If I were your girl- janet jackson, runaway love- linda clifford, hollaback girl- gwen stefani

Wow–you are all bringing me into the 21st century. I OBVIOUSLY have not been listening to the right music! Will listen to these and download as I can—I only need an hour’s worth of songs. But thanks and I’m sure others are listening too!

driver,

Don’t know about a download, but here’s the CD: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000001EXT/qid=1136661023/sr=8-3/ref=pd_bbs_3/104-8916966-8247908?n=507846&s=music&v=glance
Check the used ones to get it cheap.

Any of you Matthew Sweet/powerpop fans heard of Jellyfish?

Ha! I got one for $.87! Thanks, Audio. Jellyfish…weren’t they kind like Queen? Did Matthew Sweet have a connection to them? M&Sdad, I agree–“Girlfriend” was absolutely one of the most solid albums ever produced. I particularly loved how young Turk Matthew Sweet got two of the world’s coolest old esoteric guitar players to record with him. “Evangeline,” with Richard Lloyd playing lead guitar, belongs on the workout Ipod list.

Driver,
Take it back a step further and add something from Television’s “Marquee Moon.” Richard Lloyd AND Tom Verlaine! Still sounds contemporary after almost 30 years.

I’ve gotta put a plug in for Natasha Bedingfield from UK. My D turned me on to her CD “Unwritten” that came out this summer, and I regularly workout to it, especially like the first two tracks: “These Words” and “Single.”

Marquee Moon is fantastic. Rhythm section goes to Reed’s Rock and Roll Animal, then Girlfriend. Jellyfish no direct relation, but they were one of the best powerpop groups of all time. Kind of in the Beatles/Badfinger/Queen/Raspberries mold. Only made two albums, both were masterpieces: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000002US5/ref=m_art_li_1/104-8916966-8247908?s=music&v=glance&n=5174
Don’t want to thread crap too much, so I’ll add a few more of my work out playlist:

Springsteen: Rosalita
Hum: Stars
Papa Roach: Scars
Romantics: What I Like About You
Scissor Sisters: Take Your Mama out
New Pornographers: It’s only Divine Right
Smithereens: A Girl Like You
The Vapors: Turning Japanese

I just noticed from Audio’s amazon link—the Matthew Sweet version of “Do Ya” was their sound check for the Conan O’Brien Show–caught on tape. Too, too cool. Some other very nice stuff on that $.87 CD–David Bowie, Elvis Costello. It’s serendipitous stuff like this that keeps me checking in here.
