My daughter was saying how the cold felt worse in Boston (at school) than here (Minneapolis). I said that’s because you aren’t walking around in it here. After walking half a block to our car (it was around negative 15), she agreed that it is worse here. Instant brain freeze. I think it is going to seem very pleasant when it gets up in the 20’s later this week!

I’ve never been to Florida, but did not like it when temps went down into the 40’s in California. It is just not supposed to be uncomfortably cold there. We just don’t accept that it can get cold there.

I just feel like… we’re at severe risk of getting frostbite, our pipes are freezing and could burst, and our roads are completely impassable. You’re just uncomfortable. I feel sorry for you but it isn’t the same thing.

Okay. I am sure it is damn chilly for you. When it has been in the 80s and 90s even 70 feels cold and 60 feels freezing. Michigan is fun because we get both extremes. At certain parts of the year 40 feels pretty warm, at others it is REALLY cold. I get it.

LOL, Ema. I spent my 21st birthday in LA County (the Valley) and Las Vegas and I kept saying over and over again how beautiful the weather was while my aunts and uncles and cousins kept *****ing about the ‘cold’ temps. I had to restrain myself from rolling my eyes too hard.

It WAS pretty windy and chilly the first night we got to Vegas but still, nothing like the East Coast winters which is what I’m used to.

I’m finally feeling like winter is okay sround here (Seattle). Mid forties, rain forecast like usual. I almost put my husband on a trip to Indy. Luckily I thought twice about it and didn’t. I heard the mayor made it illegal to drive, unless you were driving an emergency vehicle… for now.

But I think it’s also the humidity. Boston tends to be more humid than Minneapolis-Saint Paul, and IMO humid cold always feels colder than dry cold at the same temperature. That said, the temperature in Boston is about 43 degrees warmer than the Twin Cities right now.

Good news is we’re on a warming trend in Minnesota. Latest forecast I saw says we’re going to get up to +3 Tuesday and Wednesday, +20 on Thursday, and +35 on Friday. Two more nights of brutal cold to get through, then hallelujah!

Some reports say that Winnipeg is now colder than the North Pole, where it’s currently winter, though it’s hard to find confirmation of that. Certainly Winnipeg is now colder than North Pole, Alaska, which is just outside of Fairbanks–both about 20 degrees warmer than Winnipeg, which is right now about the same temperature as Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Madison, Milwaukee, and Detroit.

It’s cold. But we’ve got a good furnace and a new hot water heater, so everything is cozy.

The lack of compassion for the homeless in 40 degree weather, in places where the weather is usually balmy, is astounding. Shame on you.

I am from northern Wisconsin originally, so I know cold. 40 degrees is ****ed cold if your body is not used to it, and if you do not own appropriate clothing for it.

We also lived in Florida for a time, and kids would be bundled up to their eyeballs on mornings that dipped towards freezing, because normally they wore shorts and a tee shirt.

As my FIL once said when he visited us during a cold snap, “@@@@, where a person could freeze to death while sitting under a blooming rose bush.”. It is all about perspective.

My mom in Florida is freezing when it’s 60 and she lived up north her whole life until 25 years ago.

In my opinion how cold it feels at a certain temperature depends on which way the wind is coming from. When it’s 40 in the middle of the winter up north, it feels warmer because the winds are southerly, bringing warm air north, but 40 in Florida is due to northerly winds, bringing down colder air. 40 in the winter up north feels warmer than 40 in September for the same reason. That’s my theory, anyway.

Yes that’s true, emily, but the fact is you’re not going to get frostbite in 60 degree weather (or 40). Right now frostbite can start within a few minutes here so you’ll excuse me when I don’t feel sympathy for someone who has to change their outfit whereas here we’re literally risking a severe medical condition just to go outside and try to go to work.

It’s -45 right now.

East, I hope that wasn’t directed at me. I feel nothing but sympathy for the homeless and have spent way more time working in shelters and warming/cooling stations than I care to think about.

Romani, I wasn’t suggesting that 40 in Florida is even remotely in the same league as what is going on up north now, just how the same temperature can feel so different. It was 48 in Albany yesterday and I only had a light hoodie on when I was out running errands. My mom would need to put on her fur coat, hat, gloves, scarf, over several layers of clothing if it was 48 in Florida.
