Governor Closes all Minnesota Schools Next Monday! How Cold Will it Be in Your State?

My grandma was like that.
“Put a sweater on, I’m chilly”.

It is quite possible to die of hypothermia in temperatures of 50 degrees, particularly if the person is:
Elderly or very young
In poor physical condition
Wet
Exposed to wind
Not properly dressed
Does not have access to shelter
Does not have food or water
Is stressed
Has ingested drugs or alcohol

Camping rules 101

Well, yesterday at this time it was 56 degrees where I am (CT) (although pouring rain) and now it’s 6 degrees. We are now officially in the polar vortex. Brrrrrrr.

-13 on my little home thermometer. The roads are full of crashes. We were going to make a one hour road trip to see my niece and her little ones, but no dice. They say it will be in the 30s by the weekend. Crazy.

Around 50 yesterday with pouring rain. Wind chills of minus 16 today. Not very fun.

^ same here.

At least it will be short lived here in the NE, with a long stretch of mid/upper 40’s by end of weekend through the weekend.

Albany City schools closed today because most of the kids are walkers. Suburban schools are all open.

I don’t want to travel, I don’t wannaaaa

It snowed overnight but it’s sunny right now so that will cancel out the horrible wind and 7 degree weather…right??

Someone took pity on us and plowed our street today, which was necessary for me to get to work… I was going to try anyway but I wasn’t feeling very good about my chances. So I am here, but I wish I was home, the furnace is not turned nearly as high here as I would like. I have to go to the bathroom but I refuse to take off my scarf or boots so I can’t leave my office. I’ll hold it. lol.

Current wind chill is -33. It’s pretty chilly.

My bus came right on time today with heat. I couldn’t possibly ask for more than that.

My husband worked outside last night (he picks up garbage) and when he got home this morning, his face was gray. I’m a little concerned about tonight and about my daughter’s boyfriend who is a mail carrier. He is a skinny guy with no extra insulation on him.

Take care of your people zoosermom! I feel so bad to those who have to work outside in this weather. And those of you who lose electricity, thank those linemen, who climb poles in this!

So cold! But we are suppose to be above freezing by the weekend.

zoosermom - tell your H if he wants to stay home on cold nights to ask for a garbage truck that runs on natural gas…in Minneapolis they announced no garbage collection because their new fleet of natural gas truck would not run in this weather…

Ha! I like that idea. He wouldn’t because he considers this tuition money from heaven. This one storm, because of how the timing worked out, will pay for my daughter’s entire last semester of college. I can’t even beghin to express my gratitude. And appreciation for the fact that I work indoors.

This morning at 12:30 A.M. we discovered that the hot water line to one of our bathroom sinks was frozen. Luckily my H discovered this before any pipes broke, and he was able to fix it himself with a heat gun. But really - at 12:30 A.M.?

We’re looking after a neighbor’s home while they’re on vacation, and I couldn’t help but worry about their pipes, too. So at 1:30 A.M. we bundled up and trudged across the street to their house. Man, was it cold!! Their pipes were all okay, but we opened them up to a slow drip and turned up the heat on their furnace, too.

Thank goodness schools are off today and I don’t have to go into work.

Up to -9 now. Yea!

I hope there is some seriously good karma coming your way. You deserve it!

Thanks, zooser! They are good neighbors with whom we have this arrangement - we look after their house when they’re travelling, and they feed our cats when we’re on vacation.

I’m guessing, though, they never had to feed our cats in the middle of the night when the temp was -15.

Just heard that water pipes have ruptured in multiple locations around the Charlotte area, so whole neighborhoods are without water. That comes on the heals of widespread power outages, both there and across the south.

Many folks down here have heat pumps, so their biggest concern during cold snaps is usually a high electric bill due to the heat strips that come on to boost temps when the heat pumps can’t do the job. Our current home has multiple HVAC systems, and I was relieved that only one is a heat pump; the rest of the house is heated by gas furnaces so I figured we’d at least always have heat. I turned the heat pump thermostat down to 55 and may drop it lower soon.

We’re fortunate, but in two nearby counties the natural gas supply has been disrupted. I’d never heard of that happening from a hard freeze. In other counties north of us, the electric utilities report widespread outages due, they say, mainly to very heavy demand. Customers are being asked to minimize their usage and to wait at least 15 minutes after the power is restored before turning on their heat.

We’ve made it up to 14; don’t think we’ll see the mid-20s forecast earlier. Thankfully, the wind has completely died down. I cannot imagine working outdoors in this weather, and am very thankful for those who do including our mail carrier, UPS guy, trash collector, etc.

^^ ditto on the thank you list above and I’d like to add firefighters.

Crossing my fingers that Missouri won’t be a total winter wasteland when I get back!

I would but we got no deliveries yesterday including mail and no trash collection. Doesn’t look good for today either. I don’t fault them for the trash collection. At -14 I don’t expect them to have to work outside. But our mailman and UPS drivers have trucks and I assume they have heat in those trucks.
